Prep Roundup For Monday (August 25)

sports actionCoffee County Middle School soccer girls traveled to Tullahoma on Monday for a conference match. The Lady Raiders remain undefeated at 5-0 on the season after a 4-2 win over the Lady Cats. Jenna Garretson and Morgan Henley scored first half goals to help Coffee Middle to a 2-1 advantage at halftime. Sam Ellison kicked in the two 2nd half goals.  The Lady Raiders travel to Sparta on Tuesday for a conference match with White County at 5 PM.  The Lady Raiders will be at home on Thursday as they host Algood beginning at 5:30pm.

In middle school volleyball action on Monday the Coffee Middle Lady Raiders split a Varsity/JV doubleheader on their home floor with Warren County.  The Lady Raider varsity fell 25-15 and 25-17 while the JV Raiders won their match 25-20 and 25-23.  The Lady Raiders will be back on the court today (Tuesday) as they host South Lincoln at 6pm.

In freshman football the Raider Academy took on Tullahoma. At the end of the 1st quarter it was beginning to look like a high scoring game as the Cats led 14-8. In the 2nd the Raider offence would get it rolling taking a 28-20 lead at halftime. In the 3rd the Raider freshmen upped their lead by scoring twice to make the score 42-20 going into the 4th. The scoring just kept on coming as Coffee County added 2 more TD’s and two more 2-point conversion and walked away with a 58-20 win over Tullahoma.
The next game for the freshmen Raiders will be September 14 at Cookeville.

Tonight (Tuesday) the Coffee Middle Raiders will take on Tullahoma in the annual “Coffee Cup” game at Carden-Jarrell Field in Manchester. Thunder Radio will have the broadcast with Dennis Weaver beginning at 6:20pm with kickoff set for 6:30pm.

Basketball Skills Clinic, Bucks Meet and Greet scheduled at Motlow College Aug. 30

Motlow BucksMotlow College men’s head basketball coach Matt Sligh is inviting basketball hopefuls throughout the area to learn basic hoops fundamentals and meet the 2014-15 Bucks’ team during a skills clinic on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Nisbett Center on the Moore County campus. Registration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., with the clinic to begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Following the clinic, participants will have the option of purchasing lunch and watching the Bucks perform drills and compete in contests on the Copperweld Arena floor. The clinic is open to boys and girls from age kindergarten through high school seniors. The cost is $25 per child or $40 for families with two children attending. The optional lunch cost is $5. To register for the skills clinic, visit the Motlow College athletics web site, www.MotlowSports.com and print the registration form, fill it out, and mail it to the address provided on the form. Registration can also be completed by emailing Coach Sligh (msligh@mscc.edu).

CHS Cross Country is Up and Running!

cross_country_runner_oval_decalThe resurrected CHS Cross Country teams competed in their first meet in more than 30 years on Saturday at the Mid State Cross Country Association Voyles Classic in Smyrna.  71 teams were represented at the meet with over 450 runners. The Raiders finished in 39th place out of the 57 teams that competed as a team.  Andrew Rossom had the best time for Coffee County as he finished at 20 minutes and 44 seconds averaging a 6:40 mile.  Scott Randolph came in at 21:07; Maxwell Nicoll ran a 21:19, Neil Slone came in at 22:56 while Aaron Buck finished at 24:44.   For the girls, Makenzie Morgan led the Lady Raiders as she finished at 26:17; Kayla McCormick finished at 31:48 and Claire Spellings finished at 34:04.  After the race, Coach David Muckle expressed great pride for his team with how far they have come in such a short period of time.  “I think we did exceptionally well.  I am very proud of how our kids performed, they did a great job.”  The next meet for the Raider thinclads will be September 2nd in Bell Buckle at The Webb School.

CCMS Soccer Stays Perfect

IMG_5663 (2)The Coffee County Middle School soccer team stayed perfect on the season on Saturday as they dropped Oakland Middle by a 2 to 1 score.  The Lady Raiders got their first goal in the 24th minute by Allie Amado to send the Lady Raiders into the half with a 1 to 0 lead.  Oakland came back to tie it in the 40th minute before Abbie Morgan scored the game winner in the 54th minute to improve the Lady Raiders record to 4 and 0 on the year.  The Lady Raiders travel to Tullahoma for a pivotal conference match on Monday.  Kickoff is set for 5:00 PM at Tullahoma’s East Middle School.

Red Raider football began the 2014 campaign Friday night in Franklin, TN with a match-up against Battle Ground Academy. Coffee County fell behind big at halftime, 35-7 but did not quit. The only score came on a Cody Howes 93-yard kickoff return. The Raiders came out in the 2nd half fired up and score two touchdowns in about 8 minutes. The first was on a pass from backup QB Alontae Taylor to Cody Howes from 32 yards out. Coffee County scored again after BGA fumbled on the 2 yard line. On the second play after the turnover Mill Harner took into the end zone to cut the score to 35-21. The Wildcats upped their lead in the 3rd with a TD to make it 42-21. BGA would add a touchdown pass and field goal to gain a 4th quarter advantage of 52-21. With only 6 seconds left in the game Cody Howes, who had 152 total yards in the game ran in his third touchdown on the night to make the final 52-28.

Freshman Alontae Taylor led the Raiders in rushing with 13 carries for 77 yards and he also had the most yards passing going 2 for 3, 32 yards and a touchdown.
Howes earned the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the week honor.
Coffee County will host Rhea County on Friday night at 7pm at Carden-Jarrell in Manchester and you’ll hear it live on Thunder Radio.

The Coffee County Central High School volleyball team finished the opening week of the 2014 season with a straight set win over Fayetteville on Thursday night at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym.   The Lady Raiders open the season with a 3 and 0 record after dumping the visiting Tigers 25-11, 25-19 & 25-15.  Valiana Barger continued her dominant play at the net as she led the team in kills with 7.  The Lady Raiders got 19 service aces in the match as Tyger Fenton scored 5 while Cameron Davis and Cursten Vaughn each scored 4.  Brittany Williams recorded 11 assists for Coffee County.  The JV team also swept Fayetteville in straight sets, 25 to 6 and 25 to 9 as they remain unbeaten on the year.   The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Tuesday as they welcome defending the District 8AAA champion Columbia Lions to “The Patch.”  First serve is set for 6:00 PM

The Coffee County Middle School volleyball got a straight set win over Fayetteville on Thursday night in Fayetteville.  The Lady Raiders won by set scores of 25 to 17 and 25 to 23 over the home standing Tigers. The Lady Raiders were led offensively by Shannah Frame who had 5 service aces and 2 assists.  Haley Richardson and Skylar Bell each added a kill while Amanda Mukai had 3 aces.  The JV team beat Fayetteville in a 1 set showdown 25 to 18.  Elizabeth Proffitt had 3 service aces for Coffee County.  The Lady Raiders will host Warren County in a conference match on Monday.  First serve is at 4:30 PM

Thursday Prep Soccer Roundup

Soccer GoalThe Lady Rockets soccer team traveled to Sewanee on Thursday in their second match of the year taking on St. Andrew’s-Sewanee. Lady Rocket newcomer Savannah Smith got Westwood on the scoreboard with a first half goal that gave the Lady Rockets a 1 to 0 halftime lead. The Lady Lions of SAS tied the game in the 2nd half to earn the 1 to 1 draw. Westwood will return to the pitch on Tuesday at 5:30 as they will take on conference foe Liberty. That match will be held at Dyer-Bouldin Field.

The Coffee County Central High School soccer team hosted Riverdale on Thursday night at Carden-Jarrell Field.   The Warriors from Murfreesboro raced out to a 3 to 0 lead at the half as they controlled the action in the midfield.  The Lady Raiders made some adjustments at the half that gave them a few scoring opportunities, but Coffee County could never find the back of the net.  Coffee County got their best scoring chance in the final 2 minutes, but a shot from junior Maclay Brandon clanged off the crossbar sealing the 5 to 0 loss.  The Lady Raiders will travel to Cookeville on Tuesday night for a 7 PM match.  The JV will take on the Lady Cavaliers beginning at 5.

Rockets Continue Winning Streak

The Westwood Rockets improved to 3 and 0 on the year with a 22 to 0 shutout of Middle Tennessee Christian on Thursday night at Dyer-Bouldin Field. The Rockets opened the scoring in the 1st quarter on a 57 yard TD run by Byron Sullivan on a reverse. Jacob Floyd tacked on the 2 point conversion to make it 8 to 0 after 1 quarter. Marcus Pendleton scored on a long run from the QB position in the 2nd quarter and then added a 41 yard punt return TD and 2 point conversion to push the lead to 22 to 0 late in the 2nd quarter. The visiting Cougars tried to cut into the lead before the half, but an interception by Sullivan snuffed out the threat. Westwood was able to preserve the shutout in the second half as Coach Chad Dyer emptied his bench en route to the team’s 12th straight win. The Rockets will face their toughest test of the young season next Thursday as they travel to Chapel Hill to take on Forrest. Game time is 6:30 PM.

On a very hot day at Willowbrook golf course the Coffee County boys hosted Lincoln and Franklin Counties. Franklin County had the best team score of the day with a 329 to the Raiders’ 342 and the Falcons’ 349. So with a win and loss on the day Coffee County’s record now stands at 19-10 on the season.
Senior Jacob Prater had the low score on the day with a 76 over 18-holes.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders travel to Sewanee on Tuesday to take on Grundy County.
