An area football team is looking for a new head coach. James Carr was fired as head coach of the Franklin County Rebels football team Wednesday.
Dr. Rebecca Sharber, the director of schools, said she decided release Carr after a recommendation from Franklin County High School principal Greg Mantooth. She added that Carr will remain on staff as a teacher.
Carr’s team finished the most recent season with a 3-7 record and was 21-30 during his five year stint, making the playoffs one time.

The Coffee County Central High School girls’ soccer team celebrated their 2014 season with their end of year banquet on Tuesday night at the Manchester-Coffee County Conference Center. In addition to the awarding of varsity letters, Coaches David Amado, Kandi Shemwell and Lee Xixis honored several award winners:

Hayden Hullett looks to pass the ball in for Coffee County Middle School’s 6th grade basketball team.
The boys were just as dominant in their contest as they beat the Harris boys 30 to 11. The Red Raiders held Harris to just 1 free throw and 1 field goal in the second half with their strong defense. On offense, Jaxon Vaughn scored 11 points while Trenton Scrivnor added 8 points and Hayden Hullett scored 6.
The 6th grade teams conclude their season on Friday night as they travel to Morrison. The girl’s game will tip off at 6 PM.
Aaron’s Sales and Lease Student of the Week 31 October 2014
The Aaron’s Sales and Lease Student of the week for 31 October 2014 is Sebastian Carmona. Sebastian is in fifth grade at Westwood Elementary School in Manchester. He is the son of proud parents Luis and Araceli and has a little brother. He was nominated for this award because he academically minded, excellent student and helpful to all classmates. Sebastian plays soccer and basketball. They are also his favorite things to do outside of school. His favorite subject is social studies because he enjoys the stories of history. He hopes to be an industrial engineer one day, like his Dad. Sebastian was presented with a plaque (courtesy of K&S Trophies of Tullahoma) and a set of tickets to an up-coming Nashville Predators game. Congratulations to Sebastian Carmona, the Aaron’s Sales and Lease Student of the Week.
Middle School Raiders Sweep South Franklin
Bouncing back from a finals loss on Saturday night, the Red Raiders opened conference play with a hard fought 23 to 20 win over the Trojans. The Red Raiders were hampered offensively by the physical play, but managed to shoot 11 of 14 from the free throw line to grind out the conference win. Weston Hargrove led the team with 6 points while Harley Hinshaw, Andrew Mahaffey and Briggs Haithcock all added 4 points each. With the win, the Red Raiders upped their record to 3 and 1 on the year.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders will host North Franklin on Thursday night for their 2014 home opener. Game time is 6:00 PM at the new CCMS gym.
Rocket Basketball Update

The Westwood boys fell behind 14 to 8 in the first quarter and could never overcome the hot shooting of Forrest as they fell 51 to 30. Forrest had seven 3 pointers on the night, including 3 in the 4th quarter to quell any Westwood comeback attempt. Westwood was led in scoring by Marcus Pendleton who had 12 points while Chase Simpkins added 6 points and Jake Hollandsworth added 5. Westwood will be back in action on Thursday night as they play host to Liberty. The girl’s game will begin at 6:00 PM at the Joel Vinson Gym.

Middle School Lady Raiders Win Championship
The Coffee County Middle School Lady Raiders broke open a tight game in the 4th quarter to beat DeKalb Middle on Saturday night to win the Woodbury Border War Tournament. Leading 22 to 20 after 3 quarters, Coffee Middle turned up the offensive pressure to pull out the 35 to 26 win. The Lady Raiders were paced by Julia Duncan’s 12 points and Abby Morgan’s 7 points. Ellie Graham added 6 points and Alisha Jennings added four 4th quarter points.
The Red Raiders were not as fortunate as they got off to a cold shooting start to fall to Westside by a final score of 44 to 21. The Red Raiders could only manage 2 points in the 1st quarter as they finished as the runner up in the boys division of the Woodbury Border War Tournament. Harley Hindshaw led the Red Raiders in scoring with 6 points while Andrew Mahaffey finished with 4 points.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders travel to Cowan on Monday night to open conference play as they take on South Franklin. Tipoff for the girls game is 6 PM.
Motlow Opens College Basketball Season
The college basketball season opened for Motlow on Friday night. The Lady Bucks drop a thriller in OT as they fell to Snead State 96-90. Sabrina Jackson 19 and Chelsea Holman 16 led Motlow.
In the men’s game, Jaylen Barford led the Bucks with 22 pts. D’Andre Downey finished with 20 and DeQuan Miller added 18 in the Bucks’ 104-86 win over Snead State.
On Saturday the men took on the Shooting 4 Greatness Academy from Atlanta, Georgia. The game was close throughout with the Bucks leading at halftime 48-45. Motlow was finally able to pull away late in the 2nd half for a 104-87 win. DeQuan Miller led the Bucks with 32 followed by Jaylen Barford with 222 and Clint Nwosuh chipped in with 17.
The Bucks and Lady Bucks will be back in action at on Friday and Saturday as they host Jackson St followed by Columbia St.
