Students-Athletes Make The Grade

Motlow 3Student-athletes at Motlow College continue to excel academically, proving themselves as leaders in the classroom as well as on the field and court. Twenty-five earned Dean’s List and Honor Roll designations during the fall 2014 semester.
Motlow is an annual leader throughout the Tennessee community college system in student-athlete graduation rates. The number of student-athletes receiving academic honors in fall 2014 indicates that Motlow will continue to have one of the highest graduation rates for student athletes among community colleges.

HONOR ROLL (3.0-3.49 grade point average)
Softball – Morgan Moyers, Bridgette Wilson, Macy Clements, Cameron Pearson, Traci Shelton, and Taylor Wolaver.
Baseball – Hayden Bailey, Connor Boyd, Grayson Grow, Spencer Mossburg and Taylor Paschal.

CHS Wrestlers Split Matches at Smyrna on Tuesday Night

As the regular season winds down, the CHS wrestling team continued their post-season prep as they traveled to Smyrna on Tuesday night for a tri-meet with Warren County and the host Bulldogs. The Raider grapplers won 6 of their first 7 matches against Warren County as they dropped the Pioneers 51 to 27. Hannah Curtis(wrestling at 106 pounds), Brandon Baumstein(113) Nicholas Damron(120) Jacob Rice(160), Chase Pruitt(152) and James Lynn(145) were all awarded “walk-over” wins for Coffee County. David Tate(138) got a 16 to 0 technical fall win while Joshua Tobitt(195) earned a 13 to 5 major decision win for the Raiders. Austin Payne(182) earned a pin fall win to continue his hot streak.
Against the host Bulldogs, the Raiders pushed Smyrna to the final match before falling 46 to 35. Austin Payne(182) and Joshua Tobitt(195) scored pin fall wins for Coffee County while Joseph White(126) got a 17 to 0, technical fall win. Hannah Curtis(106), Nicholas Damron(120) and David Tate(138) got forfeit wins for Coffee County. The Raider wrestlers travel to St. Andrews-Sewanee on Saturday to compete in the Mountain Top Invitational. Matches will begin at 8:00 AM.

After Thrilling Boys Game, Cats Sweep Raiders

basketball7Tuesday night in high school basketball Coffee County traveled to Tullahoma for District 8-AAA action. In girl’s play the Lady Cats got off to a hot start leading 14-0 early in the game and 38-20 at halftime. Coffee County fought hard to pull within 7 points in the 4th quarter but Tullahoma held on for the 59-47 district win.
Leading the way for the Lady Raiders was Holli Smithson with 10 points. Sara Brown was named the Gateway Tire & Service Center player of the game.
Coffee County is now 11-9 overall and 2-4 in district play.

The Coffee County boys played their first game after Head Coach J.D. Douglas was relieved of his duties. Under direction of interim Head Coach Ben Holl the Raiders lost a heartbreaker 59-56 in double overtime.
Red Raider Peyton Talley tied the game at 45 with 16 seconds remaining in regulation after he made three free-throws and Tullahoma failed to get a shot off at the buzzer.
At the end of OT #1 the game remained tied at 49. In OT #2 Tullahoma was able to put away Coffee County thanks to two big 3 point shots.
Addison Carter led the Raiders in scoring with 15. Peyton Talley was named the player of the game.
Coffee County drops to 4-17 overall and 0-6 in district play.
The Lady Raiders and Raiders will host Lawrence County on Friday beginning at 6pm. Airtime on Thunder Radio is 5:50pm.

A 38 point second half explosion keyed a 56 to 38 win for the Lady Raiders of Coffee County Middle School over Warren County on Monday night. Leading by a single point at the half, the Lady Raiders used an 18 point 3rd quarter and a strong full court defense to throttle the Lady Pioneers upset hopes. Julia Duncan finished the night with 20 points including three 3 pointers. Sixth grader Bella Vinson came off the bench to notch 11 points, including two 3 pointers.
The Raiders could not string together effective offensive possessions as they fell 35 to 19 to Warren County in the nightcap. Andrew Mahaffey led the Raiders in scoring with 6 points while Weston Hargrove added 5 points. Trace Bryant and Blanton Brown each scored points.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders travel to Tullahoma on Thursday night as they take on West Middle. The girls game tips off at 6 PM.

The magic shooting touch that vaulted the Westwood Rockets into the quarterfinals of the Duck River Valley Tournament on Saturday, evaporated on Monday night in a 2nd round loss to Liberty.  Being held to 2 first quarter points, the Rockets battled hard, but could get no closer than 4 points before falling 38 to 26 to end their season.  Chase Simpkins had 14 points on the night, including 8 in the 3rd quarter.  Jake Hollandsworth continued his hot shooting with two 3 point goals finishing with 6 points.  With the loss, the Rockets season comes to a close as Westwood finishes with a record of 6 and 14.  The Lady Rockets open tournament play on Wednesday afternoon with a 4 PM game against Huntland.  The DRVC tournament is being played at the Forrest High School in Chapel Hill.

Former Sports Writer and Broadcaster Passes Away

On Monday Manchester and WMSR Radio lost a good friend. Derek Harryman passed away at age 29.
Harryman was a sports writer for several years at the Saturday Independent and then at the Manchester Times. Harryman also broadcasted sports events on Thunder Radio, from basketball to softball and baseball. Derek was also the PA voice for Coffee County softball for the past several years and broadcasted football last season for WFTZ. Harryman just recently started working at Harton Hospital in Tullahoma.
We here at Thunder Radio send our condolences to the Harryman family.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Boys Basketball Coach Relieved Of Duties At Coffee County High School

Thunder Radio News has learned that Coffee County Central High School boys head basketball coach J.D. Douglas has been relieved of his head coaching duties effective immediately.  According to CHS athletic director Richard Skipper said the decision had been made to take “the basketball program in a different direction.”  Douglas will remain as a classroom teacher at CHS.  Current assistant coach Ben Holl has been named the interim head coach.  Douglas was in his 2nd season as boys coach at Coffee County.  His career record at Coffee County was 13 and 36.  The Raiders were 4 and 16 on the current season and finished last season with a record of 9 and 20 but advanced to the Region 4AAA Tournament before falling to the eventual state champion Blackman.

Beating a team for a 3rd straight time in a single season is a tall order indeed, but that is exactly what the Rockets of Westwood did on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Duck River Valley Conference Tournament.  The Rockets, who sweated out a 2 point win on Thursday night against Huntland, blew open a tight game in the 2nd quarter to sting the Hornets 42 to 25 in the opening round of the tournament played in Chapel Hill.  A Jake Hollandsworth 3 pointer with 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter tied the game at 7 and the Rockets never trailed again.  Westwood built a 16 point 2nd half lead as Coach Will Panell was able to empty his bench.  Hollandsworth was the hot shooter on the night for the Rockets as he drained three 3 pointers to finish with 13 points.  Byron Sullivan finished with 7 points as he was a force to be reckoned with on the offensive and defensive boards.  With the win, Westwood advances to the round of 8 as they will take on 2nd seeded Liberty on Monday night.  That game will tip off at 7:45 and will be played at Forrest.

The CHS wrestlers traveled to Shelbyville on Thursday night for a quad meet with Tullahoma, Franklin County and the host Eagles.  The Raiders dropped a 69 to 12 decision to state-ranked Tullahoma.  Austin Payne(wrestling at 182 pounds) and Dustin Seals(285) had pin fall wins for Coffee County to account for the Raider points.

The Raiders edged Shelbyville 45 to 36.  Chase Pruitt(152) and Brandon Baumstein(113) got forfeit wins.  Joel Singleton(126)got a decision win while David Tate(138), Owen Teague(132), Nicholas Damron(120), Joshua Tobitt(195) and Austin Payne(170) got pin fall wins.

Against Franklin County, Coffee County benefitted from 7 forfeit wins in a 57 to 24 win.  Red Raiders getting the “walk-overs” were Jacob Rice(160), Ethan Garner(170), Trenton Garner(220), Dustin Seals(285), Brandon Baumstein(113), Nicholas Damron(120) and David Tate(138).  Joel Singleton(126) gutted out a 4 to 2 decision win while Joshua Tobitt(195) and Austin Payne(182) got pin falls wins.  Payne was 3 and 0 on the day with 3 pins.  The Red and Black grapplers travel to Smyrna on Tuesday to take on Warren County and Smyrna.  The first matches will begin at 6:00 PM.

The Coffee County Youth Basketball League tipped off their post season tournament on Saturday at Coffee County CHS’ Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium. Each of the higher seeded teams advanced to the semifinals in both boys and girls divisions that will be played on Saturday beginning at 9:00 AM. In Girls action:
Hillsboro grounded Hickerson 21 to 6
Westwood stopped East Coffee 47 to 2
New Union overcame Deerfield 27 to 12
North Coffee derailed College Street 18 to 5
