State Unemployment Rate Down Slightly

unemployment_2Tennessee Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips has announced that the Tennessee preliminary unemployment rate for September was 7.3 percent, one tenth of one percentage point lower than the 7.4 August revised rate. The U.S. preliminary rate for September was 5.9 percent, down from 6.1 percent in August.
Economic Summary

• Tennessee’s September unemployment rate declined to 7.3 percent after four consecutive months of increasing rates.
• Over the past year, Tennessee’s unemployment rate decreased from 8.2 percent to 7.3 percent while the national rate declined from 7.2 percent to 5.9 percent.
• Total nonfarm employment increased 7,200 jobs from August to September. The largest increases occurred in accommodation/food services, education/health services, and government.
• Over the year, nonfarm employment increased 60,700 jobs. The largest increases occurred in professional/business services, leisure/hospitality, and trade/transportation/utilities.

New Trial Date Set For Bedford County Detective

Court roomA February 2015 trial date has been set for a former Bedford County detective charged with theft after investigators say she took more than $10,000 from sex offenders.
The Commercial Appeal reported that Senior Judge Don R. Ash of Murfreesboro set the date and a Jan. 23 deadline for any negotiated plea in the case.
A trial for 58-year-old Rebecca Hord of Shelbyville had been scheduled to begin Tuesday. She’s charged with theft over $10,000, official misconduct and four counts of forgery.
Investigators say Hord took the funds from convicted sex offenders who paid their registration fees and were issued generic receipts.
She was fired in 2012 for allegedly driving her county patrol car to Nashville and Kentucky for non-work related reasons and other non-specified violations of department policy.

State Urging Motorists To Beware Of Deer In Roadways

DeerState highway officials are urging motorists in Tennessee to be extra cautious now that deer hunting and mating season has arrived.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says deer-related crashes are most likely to occur between October and January, especially in November.
In Tennessee, there were 5,911 deer-related crashes in 2012. That’s an increase of 4.2 percent from the 5,670 crashes involving deer the previous year, the Associated Press says.
According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the state deer population numbers more than 900,000.
Growth of the Tennessee deer herd is expected to increase at 1 to 2 percent per year, with most expansion occurring in east Tennessee and the Mississippi River counties.

Tullahoma To Host Reception For Hypersonic Leadership and National Merit Finalists

TullahomaThe public is invited to a reception on Monday, October 27, from 5-5:30pm in the City Council Chambers. The Tullahoma Mayor and Board of Alderman will be hosting a reception to honor two important groups of the best and brightest in Tullahoma.
The Board of Mayor and Alderman will welcome Mr. Glenn W. Liston, Chief of the High Speed Experimentation Branch (AFRL/RQHX), High Speed Systems Division. Along with Mr. Liston, the Board will welcome the Professor of Aerospace Engineering and the H.H. Arnold Chair.
Additionally, the BMA will congratulate the five National Merit Finalists from the THS class of 2015: Matthew Crowson, Adam Daniel, Austin Poff, Ashley Roepke and Ashley Stevens.

Manchester Police Investigating Woman Who Tried To Cash An Apparent Stolen Check

Last week Manchester Police responded to a call at US Bank. A bank employee told police that a person in a Toyota van was trying to cash a check on a closed account for $195 at the drive-thru window. The employee ask the female driver for an ID, which she did. The teller questioned the woman about the picture not looking like her and the teller ask the female to come into the bank to sort things out. The woman said she could not come in the bank because she had somewhere she needed to be and left the bank.
The female left the ID and the check with the teller. The ID belonged to a Carla Fowler from Franklin County.
Office Ernie Colvin made contact with Fowler and she stated that someone broke into her car and stole her pocketbook a couple of weeks ago. She stated that her child support card was in her purse and it was used in Tullahoma for a purchase of $140 on October 5. The manager and an employee of the store the purchase was made at confirmed through a picture that was taken from US Bank surveillance that the female trying to cash the check was the same person that made a purchase at their store.
Manchester Chief Investigator Billy Butler said in an email that this is an on-going investigation with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Police have developed suspects in this case and plan to make an arrest or arrests in the not so distant future.

A blazing motorhome fire on eastbound I-24, between Beechgrove and Manchester shutdown traffic on I-24. It’s not clear what happened, but the incident occurred around 5:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon, October 18, 2014.motorhome1
Prior to the Coffee County authorities arriving on the scene, a slow stream vehicles passed within 10-feet of the inferno. If someone slowed to a stop, the drivers behind them started honking. All of the time, you could hear explosions from within the motorhome–each causing the flames to get higher and wider across the adjacent lanes of traffic.
WMSR Radio reached out the Tennessee Highway Patrol several times but got no response. When details are released by the THP we will post it on this website.

Early Voting has already begun in Manchester and will continue to run now through October 30th. Locations for early voting include the Coffee County Election Commission in Manchester and the CD Stamps Center in Tullahoma. Remember you must bring a TN or Federal ID with you in order to vote. According to Vernita Davis of the Coffee County Election Commission the November Ballot will include a Race for Governor, State Representatives, and State Senators as well as a Wine & Grocery Stores Referendum, a Wheel Tax Referendum, and 4 Constitutional Amendments. If you would like to learn about the 4 Constitutional Amendments, you can read a full set of amendments at either Early Voting Location. In Coffee County through the first 4 days of early voting there has been 1,070 ballots cast.

The 2015 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival will be held June 11-14. The 2015 festival will mark the 13th Bonnnroo, all of which have taken place on farmland in Coffee County. Ticket prices and a limited number of early tickets are not expected to go on sale until December. Performers for the festival have traditionally been announced in February with regular tickets going on sale shortly thereafter.
The festival has drawn 100,000 music fans each year to the site since it was founded in 2002. The festival has been widely praised as one of the best music festivals in the world and features more than 100 performers over four days.

Scam Alert: Delinquent Utility Bill Phone Call

scam4The Tullahoma Police Department was recently notified by several local businesses and TUB of a phone scam claiming to be a local Utility Department.
The caller is advising that the business has a delinquent account with a utility company other than the one which provides them service, and the account balance must be paid to prevent termination of services.
At this time police have only received reports from businesses; however, if an individual receives a call of a similar nature, please check with your local provider to confirm your account status. Tullahoma Police would like to remind our citizens to be mindful before giving any credit card or banking information over the phone without first verifying the caller.
