Wanna Be A Movie Star?

WHAT: The Feature film “42,” The Jackie Robinson Story, is coming to Chattanooga to film for TEN days and is in need of residents who want to be in the movie! Starring Harrison Ford, the film promises to be an amazingly fun time – it’s a totally free event and extras will be entered to win amazing raffle prizes ranging from Ipads, featured extra roles, all-inclusive trips to Jamaica and Cancun, and so much more! Lunch will also provide for everyone involved – and of course, they’ll be in the movie!

WHO: Anyone!  Local residents, businesses, students, moms, dads, grandparents, grandkids…they need extras of all shapes, sizes and ages!

Local Car Dealer Dies In Swimming Accident

Mike Thompson owner of Thompson Ford in Tullahoma died yesterday (Sunday) in a swimming accident at a home in Coffee County. Apparently Thompson dove into a pool at a residence on Fairview School Rd and did not come back up. Thompson was swimming with several children at the time of his death. The 911 call came through around 3pm yesterday afternoon. Deputy Kerry Farrar and investigator Chad Partin were charge in of the scene.

Murder Suspect In Court This Week

A man accused of murdering two Franklin County men in a Tullahoma motel in October 2010, is to go on trial in federal court tomorrow on other charges. Marcus Wade was indicted this past February on charges of distribution of crack cocaine and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. Area police described Wade as having a lengthy criminal history consisting of seven prior felony convictions and has been identified as an affiliate to a major crack cocaine distribution organization operating in southern Middle Tennessee.

Inmates Walk Away Update

A Doak Road resident was arrested last Thursday for assisting a prisoner on work release escape. 45-year-old Melissa Ann Brewer is charged with assisting Chris Berry to escape from his job. She was then involved in a single vehicle crash on Doak Road. She is being held under a $100,000 bond. Berry was working for the Human Resource Agency when he escaped on Tuesday, May 3rd. The Human Resource Agency was distributing food in the Ada Wright Building on that day and was using inmate labor to distribute the food.

An inmate who walked away from work release last week has been located. According to Coffee County sheriff Steve Graves, Casey Barnes who was in jail on misdemeanor charges walked away from a work detail last week. He was captured Thursday in Moore County. The sheriff says Barnes is back in custody.

Motorcycle Crash Injures Local Businessman

Well known Manchester businessman Marlin Hoover was transported to Erlanger Medical Center Friday after him and his wife, Kim, were involved in an accident on Highway 41 near Betsy Willis Road intersection. Hoover reportedly told Trooper Duane Stevens that his motorcycle apparently had a blow out causing the accident. Both were transported to a Manchester hospital and then Marlin was transferred to the Chattanooga hospital.

Another Tullahoma Company Could Be On The Move

Franklin County Mayor Richard Stewart informed his county’s industrial board last week that he is in the process of working things out for an automotive molding company to move from Tullahoma to the Franklin County Industrial Park in Winchester. If the company decides to move to Winchester it would be the second to move from Tullahoma. Phoenix Boating Company is in the process of moving to Winchester. Stewart did not identify the company.

Choose To Lose At Coffee County Schools

The Coffee County Schools Department of Health Services has been encouraging weight loss and increasing physical activity for the spring semester for their faculty and staff by sponsoring a system wide weight loss contest, “Choose to Lose”. Each week the participating employees have their weight checked by the school nurses. The school nurses have been logging weight loss, measuring body mass index, providing healthy nutritional alternatives, and exercise classes after school such as walking and Zumba. The total weight loss for this semester was 930.80 pounds! The winners for the male contest were 1st place Jeff Hinshaw-CCHS, 2nd place Ben Parker-CCHS, and 3rd place Bryan Duncan-CCHS. The winners for the female contest were 1st place Sonya Sherrill-Hickerson Elementary, 2nd place Vivian Parker-Hillsboro Elementary, and 3rd place Jackie Preston-CCMS. Winners were presented with their prize money and certificates from school nurses Sarah Walker, RN CCHS, Angela Ridner, RN Hickerson Elementary, Dawn Selvage, RN Hillsboro Elementary, and Belinda Nicholson, RN CCMS. Approximately seventy-five staff members participated in this year’s “Choose to Lose” contest. Janet Thornton, RN Director of Health Services for Coffee County Schools said she is hopeful they can increase participation next fall. Losing nearly one thousand pounds is a great accomplishment. Thornton added that she is very proud of the staff in Coffee County School system. She believes the staff has an obligation to the students to set good examples and be good role models to the children.

County Students Run In Marathon

Students at North Coffee Elementary (Charger Champs), Hickerson Elementary (Health Hawks), and Hillsboro Elementary (Hillsboro Hikers) have been training this school year in after school walking clubs. School Nurses have been staying after school two days a week encouraging students to increase their physical activity while combating childhood obesity. In the process they have been training for the ING Kids Rock Marathon. The students ran 25.2 miles during their training and the nurse’s kept a log of each student’s progress. April 27 the students traveled to LP Field in Nashville and ran the remaining one mile to complete the marathon. This was one of the largest marathons in Nashville with over 7,100 registered participants. Janet Thornton, Director of Health Services, Coffee County Schools stated, “Next year we plan to add teams from East Coffee, New Union, and Deerfield Elementary. The walking clubs are sponsored by Coffee County Schools Department of Health Services and are organized and monitored by School Nurses Dawn Selvage, Lynda Carden, Erin Blalock, and Angela Ridner.

Money taken From 2nd Church In Tullahoma

For the second time in less than a week a Tullahoma area church has been the victim of a break in. Thieves entered the Covenant Presbyterian Church on Wilson Avenue in the late hours of Wednesday or early Thursday morning. Tullahoma Police Sgt. Robert Weaver found a rear door to the church building open around 2:48 a.m. Thursday morning while doing a safety check of the building. The officer entered the building and found several drawers and closets had been ransacked and a safe had been pried open. The officer reported that there were a number of items scattered in the floor. A church official arrived and after survey the building and found that $60 had been taken from the safe and a video projector was missing. Detective Sgt. Dale Stone is investigating the burglary. Meanwhile, Detective Ty Brazier is following up on leads into the burglary of the Cedar Lane Church of Christ that was discovered Monday morning. In that burglary, thieves opened the safe and removed over $20,000. Anyone with information about these two burglaries is asked to call Tullahoma Crime Stoppers at 461-8888 for a possible reward up to $1,000 or contact either Detective Stone or Brazier at 455-0530.

Two Vehicle Crash On Thursday

The light rain may have contributed to the cause of two vehicles crashing on Farrar Hill Road Thursday afternoon. Attempting to negotiate a curve, a small car and a pickup truck collided in the curve causing extensive damage to the car. Both drivers were complaining of aches and pains, but refused medical attention from Coffee County EMS. Coffee County Sheriff’s Department was in charge of the scene.
