Lady Raiders One Win Away From Region Tournament
A superb effort by Brianna Jones spurred the Coffee County Lady Raiders to a 1-0 win over Lincoln County on Tuesday in the District 8-AAA softball tournament. Jones’ 16 strikeouts helped Coffee County to the victory. Jones gave up just four hits in the shutout. She also led the Lady Raiders offensive threat, as she got on base three times in the game. After dropping their opening game in the TCCAA/Region VII softball tournament in Chattanooga, the Motlow Lady Bucks made a run through the elimination bracket to the semifinals before falling 8-2 to Volunteer State Saturday to end the 2015 season. In a middle school softball doubleheader that took a week to complete, the Lady Rockets of Westwood got a split with Fayetteville City on Monday afternoon. Last Monday’s game at Westwood was halted due to darkness with the score tied at 20. The 2 teams agreed to resume the contest on Monday in Fayetteville prior to the regularly schedule game between the 2 teams. An excellent effort by the Coffee County Lady Raiders propelled them to a 9-1 win over Columbia Central on Monday in the District 8-AAA softball tournament. Brianna Jones was dominant in a 13-strikeout performance. Jones allowed no earned runs and two hits. Haley Hinshaw boosted her batting average thanks to a perfect 3-3 day at the plate to pace the Lady Raiders. She also scored 3 times. A hard forehand off the racket of Lady Raider Alex Crossland struck the tape at the top of the net and eased across to give Coffee County their first district tennis team title this century on Monday afternoon. The Lady Raiders scored wins in 4 of their 5 singles matches to upset Shelbyville on their home court by a final of 4 to 1. Four goals in the first 14 minutes propelled the Red Raider soccer team to a 6 to 0 win over Lawrence County on Monday night in the first round of the Region 4AAA soccer tournament. The Coffee County Middle School Red Raider golf team got a 41 from Austin Farris and a 46 from Josh Perry to squeak past Harris Middle on Monday afternoon, 196 to 197. Liberty finished 3rd while Westwood came in 4th. Matthew Hale got around in 47 for Coffee County while Jake Melton carded a 62. For the Rockets, Christopher Robinson and Nick Johnson each shot a 62. The Coffee County Lady Raiders failed to provide enough offense to beat Tullahoma on Saturday in the District 8-AAA softball tournament. The Lady Raiders finished with only 3 hits on the day as the fell to the Lady Cats and Pitcher Amber Clark, 2-0. The loss was the first this season for Coffee County Senior Brianna Jones as she is now 19-1. Coffee County at 25-5-1 on the year will play Columbia Monday at 5pm in a loser’s bracket game.
