Memorial services for Mrs. Bettie Leigh McCafferty, age 85, will be conducted Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel with Rev. Neal Glass officiating. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2012 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home. After a stay at Horizon Health Care, Mrs. McCafferty passed away Saturday, September 8, 2012 at United Regional Medical Center.
She was born September 26, 1926 in Lawrence County, Tennessee the daughter of the late John B. Lumpkins and Mary Abagail Copeland Lumpkins. One of nine children raised in Lawrence County, TN she married Gene Sanford McCafferty on January 10, 1948. She was employed with Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, TN, prior to relocating to California, with her husband, Gene who was employed in the aerospace industry. They shared a love for flying into the late 1980’s. In earlier years, Bettie was employed as a cafeteria worker in several Manchester area schools to include College Street Elementary, Westwood Junior High and Manchester Coffee County Central High School.
Following this she was also employed with Carrier Corp. in Morrison, TN. Through the years, Bettie enjoyed sewing, reading, flower gardening, nature and wildlife. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Bettie also enjoyed traveling with her husband as well as the Wesley Wanderers of the Manchester First United Methodist Church of which she was a member since the 1950’s.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include three children, Michael McCafferty and wife, Dianne of Belvidere, TN; Doug McCafferty and wife, Jennifer of Evans, GA and Tom McCafferty and wife, Betsy of Gainesville, FL; two grandchildren, Derek McCafferty and wife, Carson of Sanford, NC and Allison Brown and husband, Joseph of Martinez, GA; and three great-grandchildren, Claire Brown, Kinley McCafferty and Landon Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be Derek McCafferty, Van Baskin, Joe Boyer, Jeff Riddle, Clay Tidwell, and Hubert Lemons.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church – Wesley Wanderers, Manchester, TN.
