Westwood Basketball Update
Stephen Sullivan led Westwood with 18 points.
Coach Will Pannell said he was very pleased with the team’s effort. Earlier in the season Westwood lost to Eagleville team by 8. Pannell said “We made a few adjustments and the boys played hard for 24 minutes”. Pannell added “I know that the team and I are never happy with a loss but we are very happy with the effort and our improvement”.
Motlow Basketball Teams Undefeated
On Saturday the two teams hosted Jackson State. The Lady Bucks had four players score in double-figures in a 70-48 win. Presley Owen led the Lady Bucks with 15 points followed by Chelsey Wiseman with 14, LeKera Taylor scored 13 and Bianca Mason added 10.
In men’s action the Bucks also saw four players hit double-figures in the TCCAA 85-65 victory. Sean Gardner pumped in 15 points followed by JC Bonny off the bench with 13. Perrin Buford looked good with 14 and Kerrell Davis adding 10.
Both Motlow teams are 3-0 on the season and travel to Snead St in Boaz, Ala tonight.
Huge Come From Behind Win For Commodores
The Commodores (6-4, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) are now bowl eligible for the second straight season for the first time in school history.
Vanderbilt trailed 23-6 early in the third quarter, but Rodgers found Jordan Matthews for a 52-yard touchdown minutes later to start the Commodores rally.
Rodgers completed 20 of 35 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Matthews caught nine passes for 153 yards and a touchdown.
Vandy will host Tennessee this Saturday at 6pm on Thunder Radio.
Vandy Basketball Opens With Win
Vanderbilt rolled to an 80-65 win over Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym in the Commodores 2012-13 season-opener.
Vanderbilt has now won six-straight season-openers, dating back to the 2006-07 season. The Commodores (1-0 overall) are now 3-0 all-time versus Nicholls State (0-1 overall).
Behind a career day from Kedren Johnson, the Commodores took complete control of the game at the start of the second half. Johnson set new career-highs in points (25), rebounds (6) and assists (6). The Lewisburg, Tenn., native was an efficient 8-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range.
Titans Win Big
Chris Johnson would become the first rusher to gain 100 yards against Miami in the past 23 games. He reached the milestone late in the third period and finished with 126 yards in 23 carries and one score.
Jake Locker, back after missing five games with a dislocated non-throwing shoulder, went only 9 of 21 for 122 yards but threw for touchdowns covering 9 yards to Kendall Wright and 26 yards to Jared Cook.
Colin McCarthy had a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Titans are off this week before traveling to Jacksonville on the 25th.
Locker May Start Sunday
Locker worked with the starters on Wednesday, and Munchak says the Titans will see how he responds to practicing with the first-team offense. Matt Hasselbeck also took snaps during Wednesday’s practice.
Locker has missed five straight games after injuring his left, non-throwing shoulder Sept. 30 against Houston. He had been practicing with the scout team. Munchak says Locker will have to be honest with how he feels now that doctors have said the quarterback’s shoulder has healed as much as it can.
The second-year quarterback will have to quickly shake off any rust if he plays; Munchak says the Titans (3-6) need to beat Miami (4-4).
Manchester Youth Football Team and Cheerleaders Honored
“This is a great group of kids that have accomplished a lot, and their talent has been recognized across the state. It is an honor to honor these young men and women and show them just how proud their community is of them. This goes to show what a collected dedication from the kids, coaches, and parents can lead to”, said French after the meeting.
The Vice Mayor recognized a list of accomplishments the team has achieved during the meeting that include:
– 42-4 win loss record over the past 3 season
– 2 straight undefeated seasons
– giving up only one score (6 points) all season long
– being selected to participate in a tournament at LP Field on 11-4-2012 after the Tennessee Titans game, which they went on to finish 2-0 as winners of the Tournament.
