Receiver Coming Back To Vandy

Jordan Matthews at press conference... From vucommodores.com

Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews will return for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft a year early.
Joined by his parents and Vanderbilt coach James Franklin on Sunday, Matthews said he believes he can return and help the Commodores win their first Southeastern Conference championship.
He led the SEC this season with a school-record 1,323 yards receiving, which is also the fifth-most in league history. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder had 94 receptions, the second-highest total in school and SEC history.
Matthews, an all-SEC selection, has 150 career receptions for 2,290 yards and 16 touchdowns. Matthews has a shot to become the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards, receptions and touchdowns.

HOCKEY IS BACK

Hockey is back, and it took nearly four months and one long night to get the game back on the ice.
With the season on the line, the NHL and the players’ association agreed on a tentative pact to end a 113-day lockout and save what was left of a fractured schedule.
Commissioner Gary Bettman and union executive director Donald Fehr ceased being adversaries and announced the deal while standing side by side near a wall toward the back of the negotiating room
All schedule issues, including the length of the season, still need to be worked out. The NHL has models for 50- and 48-game seasons.
The original estimate was regular-season games could begin about eight days after a deal was reached. It is believed that all games will be played within the two respective conferences, but that also hasn’t been decided.
The players have been locked out since Sept. 16, the day after the previous agreement expired. That deal came after an extended lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.
Under the new CBA, free-agent contracts will have a maximum length of 7 years, but clubs can go to eight years to re-sign their own players. Each side can opt out of the deal after eight years.
The players’ share of hockey-related income, a total that reached a record $3.3 billion last season, will drop from 57% to a 50-50 split. The salary cap for the upcoming season will be $70.2 million and will then go down to $64.3 million in the 2013-14 season.
All clubs must have a minimum payroll of $44 million.
The league had wanted next season’s cap to fall to $60 million, but agreed to an upper limit of $64.3 – the same amount as last season.
Inside individual player contracts, the salary can’t vary more than 35% year to year, and the final year can’t be more than 50% of the highest year.
A decision on whether NHL players will participate in the 2014 Olympics will be made apart from the CBA. While it is expected that players will take part, the IOC and the International Ice Hockey Federation will have discussions with the league and the union before the matter is settled.

Tullahoma To Play In Major Baseball Tournament

USA Baseball has announced the 16 high schools that will compete in the second annual National High School Invitational (NHSI) at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., March 27-30, 2013. The tournament will include teams from 10 states and will feature some of the top prep baseball programs and players in the country. The Tullahoma Wildcats will play in this tournament and feature their top 2 players Jordan and Justus Sheffield. Jordan has his fastball hitting at over 95mph and will play for Vanderbilt next season. Justus is verbally committed to Vanderbilt the following year.

Motlow Heads Back To Hardwood

With the second half of the basketball season quickly approaching, the Motlow Bucks are in position to compete for their second regular-season conference championship in the past three years.
The Bucks (9-2, 7-0) resume action following a month-long holiday break when they host non-conference opponent Snead State on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tipoff for the men is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Copperweld Arena. The Bucks edged the Parsons 72-68 back on Nov. 12 in Boaz, Ala.
Motlow currently stands alone at the top of the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) standings, a full two games ahead of Cleveland State and Southwest Tennessee who each have two conference losses.
Head coach Jerry Nichols knows his team ended the first half of the season on a four-game winning streak, but he also realizes that regaining that momentum will not come easily.
Due to an expansion in the number of teams the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) will invite to the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. in March, the Bucks have two opportunities to make it.
In past years the NJCAA tournament consisted of only the 16 tournament champions from its 16 regions across the country. Motlow plays in Region VII and has finished as tournament runner-up the past two seasons. In 2010-11 the Bucks won the regular season title, only to fall in the championship game to Chattanooga State. Last year Motlow lost a heartbreaking 56-53 decision to tournament champion Columbia State.
“The NJCAA has expanded its tournament to 24 teams now,” said Coach Nichols. “Four regular season region champions will be added as well as four wild card selections. Region VII is among the four regions that will send its regular season champion as well as its tournament champion to the national tournament this season. Those regions will rotate every season, but we were fortunate to be chosen in a random drawing to be one of the first four regions in this new format.”
The TCCAA/Region VII Tournament will be held at Motlow this season, beginning Tuesday, Mar. 5 and ending with both men’s and women’s champions being crowned on Saturday, Mar. 9 at Copperweld Arena.

Vandy Gets Past The Tribe

Sheldon Jeter scored a career-high 14 points to lead Vanderbilt past William & Mary 64-50 Wednesday night at Memorial Gym.
Kedren Johnson and Rod Odom added 12 points apiece.
Vanderbilt (6-6) will open Southeastern Conference play against Kentucky on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. CT  at Memorial Gym.
