Dayne Crosslin of CCMS basketball

The Coffee County Middle School Red Raider basketball season came to an end on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the CTC tournament.  Taking on top-seeded South Franklin, Coffee County gave the favored Trojans all they could handle for 3 quarters.  But foul trouble and turnovers in the 4th quarter cost the Raiders in a 35 to 23 loss.

Coffee Middle got off to a hot start as they led 10 to 1 after 1 quarter.  South rallied to cut the lead to 1 with 1 minute left in the half but Coffee County held that advantage going into intermission.  The Trojans took a 19 to 18 lead with 2:38 left in the 3rd quarter and never surrendered control after that.

Coffee County was led in scoring by Hayden Garr, Dayne Crosslin and Jacob Holder who all finished with 6 points.   The loss ends the Red Raiders’ season.  Coffee Middle finished the year with a record of 10 to 10.

Saros Stops Career-High 47 Shots, Leads Preds Past Golden Knights

Juuse Saros of the Nashville Predators

The Juice was loose in Vegas.

Juuse Saros made a career-high 47 saves, and the Nashville Predators defeated the Golden Knights, 2-1, on Wednesday night. The result gives the Preds their first-ever win at T-Mobile Arena, as well as a two-game win streak as they head into the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend and subsequent bye week.

The Predators surrendered 48 shots to the Golden Knights – not their most stellar defensive effort of the season – but their netminder made the difference.

“He was unbelievable,” Preds Captain Roman Josi said of Saros. “Every time he steps in, he’s unbelievable. He’s a great goalie, and he’s got a great work ethic. It’s not always easy as a backup, and we’re really lucky to have two goalies like that.”

After surviving an early surge from the Golden Knights that saw the visitors surrender the game’s opening goal, Nashville found their footing as the first period wore on, and less than five minutes into the second, the Predators had themselves a lead.

First, it was Ryan Johansen who crashed the net and tallied in his first contest back after serving a two-game suspension for high-sticking.

Later, Nick Bonino continued his hot streak when he caught Marc-Andre Fleury out of position and potted his sixth goal in his last seven outings to give his team a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes.

Throughout the night, Saros produced arguably his finest outing of his career for the Predators, which included robbing William Karlsson by turning aside a 2-on-0 in the middle frame.

Saros made 14 of his saves in the final stanza to seal the deal and send the Preds home with their 30th win of the season and a boost of confidence as they enter the break.

Notes:

Preds Captain Roman Josi and goaltender Pekka Rinne will represent their team in San Jose at the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend over the next three days. The All-Star Skills Competition takes place on Friday night (8 p.m. CT, NBCSN) before the 2019 NHL All-Star Game commences on Saturday (7 p.m. CT, NBC).

Nashville’s bye week will follow the weekend, and the Preds will next see game action on Feb. 1 when they head to South Florida to take on the Panthers before returning home to host the Dallas Stars one night later.

Coffee County Basketball Stays Perfect in 2019, Sweeps Columbia

Ellie Graham of Coffee County CHS basketball

The Coffee County CHS basketball teams got their 7th straight doubleheader sweep on Tuesday night as claimed a pair of district wins from Columbia.  Both the Lady Raiders and Red Raiders played some of their best basketball of the year as each held on to the top spot in the district standings with impressive victories.  The Lady Raiders mauled the Lady Lions 77 to 28 while the Red Raiders dominated the pace of the game in a 66 to 55 win over the Lions.

The Lady Raiders got off to another red hot start as they drilled seven 3 point baskets in the 1st quarter to build a 31 to 4 advantage, Coffee County held Columbia to 2 points in the 3rd quarter as they built a phenomenal 67 to 13 lead heading to the 4th quarter.  Abby Morgan led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 13 points.  Ellie Graham had four triples as she finished with 12 points.  Jacey Vaughn and Bella Vinson each added 11 points and Chloe Spry came off the bench to hit a pair of 3 pointers as Coffee County finished with 12 baskets from behind the arc.  For their shooting prowess, Graham and Spry were named the Crazy Daisies co-players of the game.  The Lady Raiders improved to 22 and 3 on the year and 8 and 0 in district play.

Rod Brinkley of Coffee County CHS basketball

The Red Raiders closed out the first quarter on an 8 to 2 run to take an 18 to 12 lead.  Stopping Columbia in transition, keeping the Lions off the offensive glass and defending the perimeter allowed Coffee County to hold onto that lead throughout the game.  Coffee County forced 18 Columbia turnovers in the win.  Darius Rozier led the Raiders in scoring with 20 points.  Kyle Farless chipped in 13 while Harley Hinshaw and Rod Brinkley each netted 8.  For his spectacular rebounding performance, Brinkley was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.  The win is the 10th win in their last 11 games and moves Coffee County to 15 and 4 overall and 7 and 1 in district play.

Coffee County will enjoy an off night on Friday before the Raiders return to the court on Tuesday night when they play host to Lincoln County in a pair of crucial games for district seeding.  Tip-off is set for 6 PM at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym.   Thunder Radio’s live coverage begins with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental pregame show at 5:50
