Homecoming 2014 for Coffee County High School will be remembered for several things including an outstanding football game. The Raiders defeated Stone Memorial 24-21 after a terrific defensive effort on the game’s final play. The Panthers went for it on 4th down from the Coffee County 15 with only 4 seconds remaining. LB Mill Harner was able to knock down the pass in the end-zone to secure the win.
The Raiders gave up over 400 yards to Stone Memorial but stepped up when they had to, earning the Red Raiders their 2nd win on the year.
Coffee County went with 3 running backs on almost every offensive play and that helped propel Freshman Quarterback Alontae Taylor to 131 yards on 20 carries and he scored twice and senior Cody Howes finished with 123 yards on 19 carries and 1 TD. Kicker and Receiver Cole Hawkins kicked a field-goal in the game and was named Homecoming King. Morgan Taylor was voted Queen.

Duck River Co-op Warns Of New Scam Aimed At Commercial Accounts

scam4Scammers are threatening convenience stores in Franklin County with disconnection unless they pay Duck River Electric Membership Corporation (DREMC) bills for August that they claim were not processed due to a “glitch in the system.”
The calls came from an 801-prefix telephone number. In each case, the female caller blamed a problem with the payment processing system and said that, unless the stores could resubmit the August amounts due, a “technician” would be sent to pull the meters.
The caller promised that the payments would be reimbursed when the processing system was back on line.
The store owners became alarmed and called the co-op’s Decherd district office.
District Manager Patrick Hannah cautions all DREMC members that “we don’t contact folks in that manner.” He warns that anyone receiving such a call should immediately hang up and get in touch with the co-op.
Earlier this year, scam artists targeted stores and other commercial accounts in the Manchester area, part of a growing problem that started with con games aimed at residential co-op members across the state.
The Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association (TECA) issued a statewide alert in April due to the volume of such calls.
“The calls sound official, and the caller ID may even display the utility name,” said TECA Executive Vice President and General Manager David Callis.
DREMC started receiving complaints from members about utility scams in August of 2013. Since then, the co-op’s advice has been to never share banking, identity or personal information with callers who make unsolicited telephone or in-person contact.
“It seems there is new version of the utility bill scam launched every month,” said Steve Oden, DREMC’s director of member services. “We don’t want our members to be taken in by these thieves. Don’t help them make you a victim. Hang up.”

58-year old Ricky L. McCurry from Manchester died this week after the bulldozer he was operating at Eagleville High School in Rutherford County somehow overturned.
Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said McCurry was killed when his bulldozer overturned and landed on top of him.
Because of the severe injuries McCurry received, officials decided not to airlift the Coffee County man but instead transport him to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.
Multiple agencies, including the THP, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Operational Safety and Health Administration were investigating the incident.

Tombstone Found In South Dakota, Stolen From Coffee County

South Dakota authorities have returned a stolen Tennessee, tombstone discovered in Spearfish, SD and inscribed with the inscription, “We shall meet again.”
The words on S.J. Elliot’s 1888 tombstone matches those on his wife’s tombstone near Manchester, Tennessee. Elliot’s tombstone had been reported missing a month earlier to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, more than 1,300 miles from Spearfish.
Spearfish, SD Police Officer Kale Nelson says a resident found it in an alley during a motorcycle rally. The city’s cemetery determined that it came from Tennessee by using Google.
Nelson says it will probably remain a mystery how the tombstone traveled to Spearfish, SD. Police shipped the 60-pound stone back to Coffee County, where it arrived in two pieces. Authorities plan to have it restored and returned to its cemetery. (KDLT TV News)
