Emerald Ash Borer Causing Major Problems

emerald-ash-borerCoffee County is one of 59 Tennessee counties in which there is a quarantine for Emerald Ash Borers.
The list of quarantined areas in the state is growing due to the invasive pest targeting ash trees. The prohibition on the movement of ash trees and ash tree products has expanded to neighboring Bedford, Cannon, Rutherford and DeKalb counties, as well as Lincoln, Van Buren, Grundy, Moore, Sequatchie, and Warren.
The Emerald Ash Borer is a destructive forest pest that was introduced from Asia into the United States in the 1990s. It was first detected in Tennessee in July 2010. EAB beetles can kill an ash tree within three years of the initial infestation.
Humans tend to contribute to the spread of this bug, unknowingly transporting it through infested nursery stock, firewood, unprocessed saw logs, and other ash products.
Citizens should report any symptomatic ash trees to TDA and follow these simple rules:
• Don’t transport any firewood, even within the state.
• Use firewood from local sources near where it will be burned.
• If you purchase firewood, make sure that it is labeled and certified to be pest free.
• Watch for signs of infestation in your ash trees. (WGNS Radio)

Beware of Real Estate Scam

scam4A local realtor is warning potential renters of a scam that is making the rounds in the area.
According to Weichert Realtors—Joe Orr, someone is taking the postings of the firm’s rental properties posting them on another web site.
When a potential renter contacts the site about renting property, they are told to send a deposit to an address and then a key will be mailed to the potential renter. But the key is never mailed.
Sydney Burfitt of the real estate firm says that is not how they operate.
According to the real estate agency representative, one person who was told to send a deposit provided a telephone number of the scammer they spoke with and that information has been turned over to the Tullahoma Police Department.
If anyone has been victimized by this scam they need to contact the police department. (Tullahoma News)

12 year-old Found Guilty of Reckless Homicide

GuiltyOn December 11 of last year, 11-year-old Sienna Dusk Owens was shot and killed by a 12 year-old boy in Franklin County. After hearing evidence in Franklin County Juvenile Court on Friday, Judge Thomas Faris found the boy guilty of the charge of reckless homicide. According to Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chris Guess, Sienna, of Decherd, suffered a gun-shot wound to her upper back from a 20-gauge shot-gun at the boy’s home.
Sienna and the boy were classmates at North Middle School.
The boy’s mother, Jennifer Ann Amacher, who was home at the time of the shooting, has been indicted on five counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon in connection the case. The 5 counts is apparently because other children were at the residence and she was at home at the time of the shooting. The charges against Amacher are still pending.
The judge set a sentencing date of Dec. 2, at which time he will hear additional testimony before imposing a sentence on the boy.

IRS Scam Returns

irs-scamArea law enforcement continues to receive tips about IRS imposters threatening arrests, lawsuits, and property seizures unless the victim pays up. Law enforcement says they’re investigating alongside several other agencies across the United States. Police say these calls are not coming from the IRS.
The Internal Revenue Service will never demand payment over the telephone. Typical IRS communication comes in the form of U.S. Mail. If you receive a phone call that you suspect is a tax scam, hang up and report it to the US Treasury, Office of Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484. To help avoid becoming the victim of a scam, area law enforcement recommend to never transfer funds through third-party wire or card services. People in Coffee County have fallen for this scam in the past. Sheriff Steve Graves is advising local residents to not fall prey to this latest attempt by scam artist.
