Two Die In Saturday Crash
Two people were killed and 2 injured in a three vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on Highway 53 in Manchester. According to a report by Trooper Gavin Sullivan, a 1996 Ford van operated by 59 year old Barbara Davis of Jim Cummins Hwy Bradyville was traveling north on Hwy 53 when a 1999 Ford Escort operated by 23 year old Dustin Kindred of Crestwood Drive, Tullahoma struck the van in the rear. The van then spun around and crossed into the southbound lane and was struck by a 1989 Nissan Sentra operated by 56 year old Mallory Roberts of Hayfield Square Manchester. Roberts vehicle then rolled over and Davis’ vehicle landed on the passenger’s side. Roberts and 61 year old Larry Davis of Bradyville who was a passenger in the van were pronounced DOA at a Manchester hospital. The other two drivers; Barbara Davis was flown by Lifeflight to Vanderbilt and Dustin Kindred was transported to Manchester Medical. Both are receiving treatment for their injuries.
Sentencing Delayed For Tullahoma Man
The sentencing of the man convicted of the murder of a 2-year-old Tullahoma boy was delayed Friday in Coffee County Circuit Court. Thomas “TJ” Greenwood, 22, was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday by jury of seven women and five men of the March 9, 2010 murder of Hayden Gage West. Greenwood was babysitting the child the day of the death. Defense attorney Roger Bean informed Coffee County Circuit Court Judge Craig Johnson that one his “very important witnesses had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance after becoming ill.” He then asked the judge for the sentencing hearing to be delayed. The judge set the sentencing hearing for April 5 at 9 a.m. Greenwood is facing either a sentence of life in prison without parole or life which would mean he would be eligible for parole after serving 51 years in prison.
Micro Craft Anniversary
A year later and having to do without, Tullahoma’s employee formed and owned Micro Craft Inc. has survived and is making its way toward a future expansion. This weekend marks the company’s one-year anniversary for the employees purchased the company. By the employees buying the company 55 jobs were saved. Micro Craft now has 60 employees with plans to have up to 80 in the next year or so with a goal to have 150 in the next five years.
Matheny Legislator Of The Year Award
Representative Judd Matheny of Tullahoma is receiving recognition for his hard work in the Tennessee General Assembly by two development districts. The South Central Development District as well as the Upper Cumberland Development District, recently announced they each will be presenting Matheny with their Legislator of the Year Award. Representative Matheny is a veteran of Capitol Hill and last year was chosen to serve as the Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of Representatives.
Winners In Tennessee In Mega Millions
For the Volunteer State, the incredible Mega Millions jackpot run that ended Friday night resulted in more than 291,000 winning tickets sold in the state, including 2 who won $250,000 in Monteagle and Ardmore. Additionally, there was an amazing amount of fun around offices, coffee shops and elsewhere, with the most important news of approximately $9.3 million generated for education during this jackpot cycle alone. Sales in Tennessee for the Mega Millions jackpot run, which began on Jan. 27, were approximately $22.8 million, from which an estimated $9.3 million will be given to the scholarship and grant programs funded by Tennessee Lottery ticket sales. Three tickets, sold in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois, matched all six numbers drawn. The record jackpot of $640 million will be split three ways, with each winner receiving $213.3 million.
Duck River Utility Commission Looking For Grant Money
The Duck River Utility Commission (DRUC) is seeking grant funding to reduce its energy expenses and operate a more environmentally friendly facility.
DRUC General Manager Randal Braker told the commissioners at Wednesday afternoon’s meeting that an application has been submitted for a Clean Tennessee Energy Grant to help cover the cost of updating the lighting fixtures in DRUC buildings. The grant application calls for upgrading a total of 183 fixtures in eight different facilities with high-efficiency fluorescent and, in some instances, LED units. Once the conversion is completed, he said DRUC’s electricity bills should decrease between $10,000 and $12,000 a year.
New Signage At TUB
Drivers passing the Tullahoma Utilities Board building on South Jackson Street will soon notice a new addition to the scenery once a new video monument sign is installed outside the facility. The utility board voted to purchase the LED sign at a cost of $49,220 from Sign-A-Rama/Cook Neon Signs. According to the memo general manager Brian Skelton, TUB had budgeted $100,000 for the purchase in a prior year’s budget, and will now be able to make the purchase for roughly half the cost they had anticipated.
The board also awarded Garners Painting of Decherd will be paid a total of $12,280 to paint exterior steel fixtures at TUB’s administrative facility of South Jackson Street. Skelton pointed out that Garners Painting was the low bidder on the project and has worked for TUB in the past.
Verdict: Greenwood Guilty Of 1st Degree Murder
WMSR News was first to report Thursday (March 29) that Thomas “TJ” Greenwood of Tullahoma was found guilty of 1st degree murder. Greenwood faced accusations after the death of 2-year-old child, Hayden Gage West, on March 9, 2010. Greenwood was babysitting the child at the time. Greenwood told police that he suffered a seizure, and when he fell in the bedroom, the child’s head struck a bed rail in the bedroom.
Tullahoma Dr. Clifford Seyler testified that Hayden had numerous bruises and injuries on various parts of his body. “There were bruises on places not normal for him,” the doctor testified. “There was bruising on his back the shape of a shoe.”
Sentencing for Greenwood will take place Friday (March 30).
Man Arrested for Threatening TWRA Officer
A man was arrested in Arkansas after he threatened a Tennessee Wildlife Resource Officer. Thirty-three-year-old James Mitchell Hicks was arrested in Fort Smith, Arkansas on Wednesday. Officials said Hicks threatened to kill a Coffee County TWRA officer. The threat allegedly follows a boating accident on Tims Ford Lake a couple of years ago. Area law enforcement officers have been searching for him in recent weeks due to the threats, which officers are said to have taken seriously.
