Oftentimes, the issue of hunger is associated with people in inner cities, where the cost of living tends to be high.
But a new study shows some of the greatest need can be found where America’s food supply is grown and raised.
Jon Bailey, director of rural public policy program for the Center for Rural Affairs, authored the report, which examines the use of food stamps, now called SNAP benefits, from 2008 to 2012.
“And what we found is that during that time period, more households in rural areas received SNAP benefits than did households in more urban – both metropolitan and small-city – areas,” he says.
During the years reviewed, more than 14 percent of rural households received SNAP benefits, compared to slightly less than 11 percent of urban households.
Another key finding, says Bailey, is that rural areas and small cities have higher percentages of households with seniors and children receiving food support than in larger urban areas.
“SNAP is providing a way for those people and those households to meet their food needs, which is important,” he points out, “because those two population groups are probably most at risk of hunger and food insecurity.”
In rural areas, one in nine households has a SNAP recipient who is either under age 18, or an adult 60 years of age or older.

Coffee County Moving To 5A Football In 2015

TSSAAThe TSSAA Board of Control voted Monday to split the state’s largest 32 schools into their own classification beginning with the 2015 football season. The remaining schools will be split into five classifications under the old Class 5A format with the top four teams from each region earning playoff berths.
All of the 32 Super 6 teams will automatically qualify for the playoffs, making the regular season a mosh pit for seeding.
It looks like at this time District 8-AAA will be split, with Tullahoma and Lawrence County likely dropping to 4A while the rest of the district’s teams; Coffee County, Columbia, Franklin County, Lincoln County and Shelbyville will change to 5A.
The TSSAA will meet again in November to check enrollment from each school and finalize new classifications and regions. The changes will take affect for next year’s 2015 football season.

Monday was a great day for the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders of Coffee County Middle School as all 3 teams in action on Monday got big wins.  The Lady Raider soccer team played host to North Franklin in a lightning shortened affair on Monday afternoon.  The Lady Raiders got a pair of goals from Allie Amado and a goal each from Julia Duncan and Bailey Sherrell in the first half to take a 4 to 0 lead at the halftime break.  At the half, both teams were pushed off the field due to lightning and the game never resumed giving the Lady Raiders a perfect start to their season.  Even though this was a conference opponent, the game was played as a non-conference game.  The Lady Raiders will host Harris Middle on Thursday at CCMS at 5 PM in a conference battle.

The Lady Raider volleyball team traveled to Flintville on Monday and tamed the host Bobcats.  The varsity and JV teams each got straight set wins over the Lady Bobcats to open their seasons in winning form.  Coach Lora Selvog and the Lady Raiders will take on Warren County on Tuesday night at Warren County Middle School beginning at 4:30 PM.  The first HOME match of the year for the Lady Raiders will be on Tuesday, August 19 as they host Eagleville in a 5:00 PM contest.  You can hear a broadcast of that match on Thunder Radio as a part of our Hometown Tuesday series will bring you live play-by-play action of the match.

The Coffee County Middle School JV football team opened the season under the lights at Carden-Jarrell Field on Monday night with a 40 to 0 win over Warren County.  After a late start due to weather, the Raiders got two 1st half rushing touchdowns each from Hayden Skipper and Tanner Hulvey, along with a 37 yard fumble recovery TD from Drake Medina to lead 40 to 0 at the half.  Hulvey and QB Bryson Hullett each scored a pair of 2 point  conversions, while Justin Gravitt added the other PAT.  The Raiders reserves held the Pioneers scoreless in the 2nd half to seal the win.  The Coffee Middle varsity team is off this week, they return to action on Tuesday, August 19th as they will travel to take on Whitwell.  That game is set to kick off at 6:30 PM
