Early Voting Starts Wednesday

early voteNext up in the election cycle is the November 4 General Election.
32,067 registered voters in Coffee County will have the opportunity to cast ballots either on November 4 or during early voting from October 15- 30.
The Coffee County Election Commission says a high voter turnout is possible because of the wheel tax referendum, the wine in grocery stores referendum for the cities of Tullahoma and Manchester, and four proposed amendments to the state constitution. One of those amendments is the yes/no vote on the changing of the abortion law language in the state of Tennessee.
In Manchester, early voting will be held at the Election Commission office at 1329 MacArthur Drive from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
In Tullahoma, early voting will held at C.D. Stamps Community Center at 810 S. Jackson Street from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mon-Fri and 9 a.m. – 12 noon Saturdays. Remember proper identification is required.

10/17/14 —- Ida Mary Kendrick

Ida Mary Kendrick, 94, a resident of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community in Saint Marys, Ohio, died Monday, October 13, 2014, at Otterbein Saint Marys.

She was born September 21, 1920, in Jamestown, New York, the daughter of Ray and Lucina (Harrington) Dennison.

She married the Reverend James B. Kendrick on November 1, 1945 and he preceded her in death on December 6, 2008.

She is survived by her two children: Rebecca (Wayne) Lybarger of New Bremen, Ohio; James (Connie) Kendrick, Jr. of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; by a son-in-law, Dr. John H. Judd of Albuquerque, New Mexico; by her grandchildren: Andrea Lybarger; David Lybarger; Patricia Judd; Dr. John Patrick (Jeong) Judd; Matthew (Erin) Turnstall. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: John Judd, Jr; Kaitlyn Judd; Emily Turnstall; Sarah Judd.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Patricia Judd; her brothers: Murray Dennison; Gerald Dennison; Harley Dennison; by a grandson, John H. Judd, III.

Ida Mary was a 1938 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1943 graduate of Mt. Sinai School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse. She had worked in many different hospitals during her working years, as she and her husband, Reverend Jim Kendrick, moved around the country during his Naval career. She was an avid reader, and a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Saint Marys, Ohio.

Funeral rites will be held 11:30 A.M. Friday, October 17, 2014, at the Coffee County Funeral Chapel, 786 McMinnville Highway, Manchester, Tennessee, Pastor Danny Freeman, officiant.

Interment to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Friends and family in Ohio may call from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 16, 2014, in the Meditation Room on the campus of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community, where memorial donations may be given to Grace United Methodist Church in Saint Marys.

Friends and family in Tennessee may call one hour prior to the funeral rites on Friday, October 17, 2014 at Coffee County Funeral Chapel

Middle School Basketball Season Opened On Monday

basketball 5The Westwood Middle School and Coffee County Middle School 6th grade teams opened the 2014 basketball season on Monday night. In both pairs of contests, the girls won while the boys came up short in the road contests. Westwood opened the season at Moore County while Coffee Middle was at North Franklin.
Westwood girls got a 30 to 16 win at Moore County. Morgan Jones and Ashley Starks each poured in 11 points to lead the Lady Rockets in scoring. Haley Miller and Kristen Wray each added a field goal and a free throw. The Rocket boys came out with a cold shooting touch as they fell 38 to 28. The Rockets trailed 20 to 5 at the half before making a frantic 2nd half comeback to close the deficit to 4 points midway of the 4th quarter. There foul trouble ended the comeback attempt. Marcus Pendleton led the Rockets in scoring with 10 points while Chase Simpkins added 9. Jake Hollandsworth and Augie Burch each added 4 points. The Rockets and Lady Rockets open their home season on Thursday night as they welcome in conference rival Eagleville. Opening tip will be at 6 PM.
For Coffee Middle, the girls won 25 to 20 as Bella Vinson led all scorers with 13 points. Kerrie Munn added 8 points while Kylie Phillips and Amelia Prater each notched a field goal. In the boys contest, the Red Raiders suffered a heart-breaking 27 to 25 loss. Jaxon Vaughn led the Raiders in scoring with 8 points while Kyle Farless and Trenton Scrivnor each added 4 points as 8 Raiders tallied points for Coffee County.

10/15/14 — Janie Ruth Clark

Mrs. Janie Ruth Clark, age 70 of Woodbury passed away Sunday, October 12 at Highland Medical Center in Sparta.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 15 at 2 PM at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. James Myers officiating.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 5 – 8 PM at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home.

A native of Moore County, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Dora Lee Baker Golden.

She worked as a Sewer for Tennessee Apparel. She enjoyed doing crafts such as crocheting and loved to watch western TV shows.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Willy Harvey Golden.

Mrs. Clark is survived by two sons, Ronald Clark and his wife, Cheryl and Donald Clark and his wife, Brenda, both of Tullahoma; one sister, Wanda Martin and her husband, Earl of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Payden Clark of Manchester, Amber Clark of Tullahoma and Raven Garner and her husband, Dylan of Winchester and one great grandchild, Raeley Garner.

10/15/14 —– Jeffrey Wayne Hoskins

Mr. Jeffrey Wayne Hoskins, age 50, of Tullahoma, TN., passed away Friday, October 10, 2014, at Harton Regional Medical Center.

Born in Leslie County, KY., and a native of Tullahoma, TN., he was the son of Christine Hoskins of Tullahoma and the late John Hardy Mitchell.

He attended Church of God of Prophecy in Tullahoma and was a self employed construction worker. He loved plants and enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, going to the lake, and nature. He also loved his dog Chaco.

In addition to his father, he preceded in death by his step father John (Pop) Russell, and his sister Tammy Bagley.

He is survived by his mother Christine Hoskins of Tullahoma, TN., daughter Terrilynn Hoskins and son Jason Wayne Hoskins, both of Salem, IN., daughter Tiffany (Chad) Robbins and son Justin Hoskins, both of Mitchell, IN., daughter Hayley Rich of Alexandria, KY., step son Coy Rivard of Cincinnatti, OH., sister Sherry (Darrell) Hall of London, KY., twin sister Jennifer (Michael) Posey of Tullahoma, brother Richard Hoskins of Tullahoma, four grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins, and one very special friend, his dog Chaco.

Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, October 15, 2014 from 11 AM until 2 PM in the Chapel of Tullahoma Funeral Home.

Update On Local Cross Country Teams

cross countryClosing out their inaugural season in glorious fashion, the Westwood Cross Country teams finished strong at the Mid-State Cross Country Association Regional Championship in Smyrna on Saturday. The boys’ varsity team finished 11th out of 22 teams as 183 runners competed in the boys’ varsity race. Samuel Workman finished the 2 mile course at 13:05 which placed in the top 25 after Saturdays meet and qualified him for the State Championship Meet to be held this Saturday in Knoxville. James Tyler, Corey Walker and Eric Randolph all finished in the Top 100. The girls varsity team finished in 14th place as they were paced by M.E. Spadley who finished at 17:28 just ahead of Anna Widener who came in at 17:30. The meet proved to have the fastest times for the girl’s varsity team as the top 5 runners finished within 25 seconds of one another. Coach Jim Dobson remarked following the race that “it has been a pleasure to coach” this team this season. Samuel Workman will compete in the Tennessee State Middle School Cross Country Championships to be held Saturday, October 18 at Victor Ashe Park in Knoxville.

Battling rainy conditions and the absence of several runners, the Coffee County Cross Country teams competed in the Mid-State Cross Country Association Championship on Saturday in Smyrna. The Red Raider runners finished 21st as a team out of 49 teams and were again paced by Andy Rosson who ran the 5K course in 18:32 to finish in 16th place out of more than 300 runners. Scott Randolph finished in 39th and Maxwell Nicoll ran 20:02 to notch 52nd place. For the girls, Kayla McCormick ran a personal best 27:48. The Raiders and Lady Raiders run at Webb School on Thursday at the Freeman Invitational as they prepare for next week’s Region Championship on the Sharp Springs course at Smyrna.

Two Armed Robberies In Tullahoma

armed robberyTullahoma Police are investigating two robberies that occurred over the weekend.
The first one was at the Quick Stop Mini Mart on East Lincoln Street Sunday morning and the second one was at United Food and Gas of Tullahoma on Sunday night.
At the Quick Stop the store clerk told the officer that a man with a black handgun entered the store. He put the gun to the man’s head and demanded money.
The robber was described as being around 6 feet tall, skinny build wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans, gloves and a black cloth over his face.
At United Food and Gas of Tullahoma an employee told police that a man walked into the store wearing a black hoodie, red shirt underneath, a full face black mask and blue medical gloves and a black handgun. The robber then jumped the counter and placed the gun to the employees head and grabbed her arm and pushed her into the cash register. He then demanded that she give him the money.
While police were at the store investigating, a caller reported seeing an individual matching the description of the robber in the area of Dossett Apartments. Officers went to the area but did not see anyone matching the description.
