The Westwood Middle School and Coffee County Middle School 6th grade teams opened the 2014 basketball season on Monday night. In both pairs of contests, the girls won while the boys came up short in the road contests. Westwood opened the season at Moore County while Coffee Middle was at North Franklin.
Westwood girls got a 30 to 16 win at Moore County. Morgan Jones and Ashley Starks each poured in 11 points to lead the Lady Rockets in scoring. Haley Miller and Kristen Wray each added a field goal and a free throw. The Rocket boys came out with a cold shooting touch as they fell 38 to 28. The Rockets trailed 20 to 5 at the half before making a frantic 2nd half comeback to close the deficit to 4 points midway of the 4th quarter. There foul trouble ended the comeback attempt. Marcus Pendleton led the Rockets in scoring with 10 points while Chase Simpkins added 9. Jake Hollandsworth and Augie Burch each added 4 points. The Rockets and Lady Rockets open their home season on Thursday night as they welcome in conference rival Eagleville. Opening tip will be at 6 PM.
For Coffee Middle, the girls won 25 to 20 as Bella Vinson led all scorers with 13 points. Kerrie Munn added 8 points while Kylie Phillips and Amelia Prater each notched a field goal. In the boys contest, the Red Raiders suffered a heart-breaking 27 to 25 loss. Jaxon Vaughn led the Raiders in scoring with 8 points while Kyle Farless and Trenton Scrivnor each added 4 points as 8 Raiders tallied points for Coffee County.
