10/11/14 —- Michael “Chris” Elkins

Michael “Chris” Elkins, age 42, of Tullahoma, TN passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014 at his residence.

He was born May 1, 1972 in Cleveland, Tennessee, the son of Michael Allen Elkins and Jenny Lyn Elkins.

He attended Bradley Central High School in Cleveland.  Chris then joined the United States Marine Corp, May 10, 1990 and was deployed to Camp Pendleton, CA until his honorable discharge February 4, 1993.  He attended Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN, a part of the Sigma Chia fraternity, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.  During this time, he joined the Peace Corp, where he was involved in the environmental pure water assignment in El Salvador.  Chris was currently employed as an Environmental Biological Scientist, US Department of Defense at Arnold Air Force Base.  While employed as a Natural Resource Manager at AEDC, Chris was also working on his Master’s Degree.  Chris was an avid NASCAR fan of Kyle Busch, enjoyed the music of the band “Tool” and was a skilled player of the game Chess.

In addition to his parents, Michael and Jenny Lyn Elkins of Cleveland, TN; Chris is survived by his loving wife, Melinda “Mindy” Elkins of Tullahoma, TN; daughter, Zorra Winter Elkins and his son, Kellen Barrett Elkins, both of Tullahoma, TN; a sister, Julie Jolly and husband, Brad of Gallatin, TN; and 3 nieces and nephews, Clare Jolly, Callen Jolly and Clay Jolly all of Gallatin; a grandfather, Odell Sawfford of Cleveland TN; a father-in-law, Don Hendrix of Tullahoma, TN; a mother-in-law, Jeanine Hendrix of Jacksonville, FL; and a brother-in-law, Jeff Hendrix of Jacksonville, FL.

There will be no public service per his request, and the family will have a private memory of life at a later date.

Canines To Search Manchester Schools

The Manchester Board of Education will be using a portion of a Safe Schools grant that the system recently received to contract with a Loudon, Tennessee company that provides contraband searches using specially trained canines. Funding will be used to randomly search the three Manchester city schools for $300 a month for a total of $2,100 for the remainder of the school year.
Interquest Detection Canines will go into the three schools during regular school hours searching for ammunition, alcohol and illegal and abused prescription drugs.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Personnel Looking For Armed Robbery Suspect

armed robberyOn Sunday October the 19th at approximately 9:35pm Franklin County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to an armed robbery just outside the Winchester area. A report filed by Deputy Charles Keller stated that and unidentified individual entered Gary’s Lakeside Market and held a handgun at the clerk. The suspect then demanded the clerk remove all money from both registers and hand it over then locked the clerk in the office located at the rear of the store. The suspect then fled the premises on foot. The suspect was dressed in black gloves, black hood and black shoes with white trim. The suspect appeared to be male between 5”7- 5”9 and weighed between 170-200lbs. Any citizen having any information regarding this incident is asked to contact Inv. Bedford County Man Nabbed In TBI Child Porn Investigation

Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have obtained indictments for a Bedford County man accused of possessing child pornography.
Acting on an investigative lead from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, TBI Special Agents began investigating Rodger Lee Mader on April 19th. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that on March 30th, Mader uploaded images consistent with child pornography to his Google E-mail account.
On October 20th, the Bedford County Grand Jury indicted Mader, charging the 33-year-old Shelbyville man with 47 counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. He was arrested by deputies from the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department and booked into the Bedford County Jail, where at the time of this release, he was being held on $235,000 bond.

Donated Car Becomes Manchester DARE Car

The Manchester Police Department received a nice donation this week. The Patel family donated a 2002 Nissan 300 ZX to the department in memory of the late Dipan Patel. Manchester Police will use the car as its DARE program vehicle. Police Chief Mark Yother said the cost of the striping and lights for the car will be paid for out of money from the community police fund. Most of the money is donated through various sources.
dare car 1Yother said he hopes the sports car will attract young people so they can help them make the right choices.
The Nissan 300ZX will be used in the DARE program, parades and other community events.
Police officers will also take the car to various speaking engagements at schools, senior centers, community organizations and other requested groups. Yother says it’s all about sending out positive information.

Coffee County Leadership is a personal development program designed to educate participants on community dynamics and issues while also motivating participants to develop and utilize their knowledge and leadership skills in addressing important community issues and needs for the economic well-being and quality of life of Coffee County and our region.
The highly structured ten-month program presents a wide range of opinions and perspectives through lectures, panel presentations, tours and group activities. A primary goal of these activities is to train persons for leadership and involvement in public affairs and to establish channels of communication among community leaders.
On Wednesday the group had a “Quality of Life” day. The future leaders visited several locations around the area including the Manchester Recreation Center, Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Drug Court/Anti-Drug Coalition, Manchester Art Center and in Tullahoma Hands on Science Center, South Jackson Civic Center and the Tullahoma Chamber of Commerce.

District 8-AAA Girl’s Soccer Teamed Named

The soccer coaches of District 8AAA tabbed 5 Lady Raiders for their spectacular effort this past season. Senior Alex Ellison and sophomore Karson Young were named to the 1st Team All District 8AAA team while junior Izzy Huddleston and junior Maclay Brandon were named to the 2nd Team All District 8AAA team. Lady Raider freshman Eliza Masters was selected as the District 8AAA’s Freshman of the Year. The Lady Raider soccer team is coached by David Amado, Kandi Shemwell and Lee Xixis.

Middle School 6th Graders Win Again

basketballThe Coffee County Middle School 6th grade basketball teams traveled to Harris on Tuesday night bringing home a pair of convincing wins. The Lady Raiders continue to pummel the opposition as they bested Harris 43 to 8. After 4 games, the Lady Raiders have scored an average of 41 points per game while giving up just 14. Bella Vinson scored 27 points for Coffee County and Keri Munn added 10 points. Coach Jamie Morgan rested most of her starters in the 2nd half, including the entire 4th quarter as 7 of the 11 Coffee Middle players had points in the win.
The Red Raiders evened their record at 2 and 2 as their defense held Harris to just 4 points in the first half in route to a 32 to 15 win. Jaxon Vaughn had 10 points to lead Coffee County while Kyle Farless and Trenton Scrivnor each notched 9 points.
The 6th grade cagers will host North Franklin on Thursday night beginning at 6:00 PM. They will follow that up with another home game on Friday night as they play host to South Franklin at the CCMS gym.

10/17/14 —- Sylvia C. Wilson

Sylvia C. Wilson, age 78 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away into rest on 
October 17, 2014 at the Southern Tennessee Medical Center in Sewanee, Tennessee. 

Mrs. Wilson will be fondly remembered as a beloved daughter, sister, mother, 
grandmother and friend. She enjoyed singing and co-founded the Hardin County 
Singers in Elizabethtown, KY where she also was a member of the church choir. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Denis F. Caul and Jacques 
Monica Demel Caul and son, John Jenks. 

Mrs. Wilson is survived by her daughters, Kelly D. Kimmel and her husband Danny 
of Spring Hill, Florida and Jill S. Clark and her husband Clark of Hillsboro, 
Tennessee; sister Susan L. Blair of Santana, Kansas; four grandchildren,
Joseph Cundiff, Ben Kimmel, Ted Kimmel and Joy Kimmel; four great-grandchildren,
Porter Cundiff, Joel Cundiff, Riley Kimmel and Leah Kimmel; and a host of other
relatives and friends.

Galaxy Skate Burglary Suspect Charged

galaxy skateTullahoma Police Investigator Rana Pawlowski has charged 47 year-old Georgia resident, Harold L. Wiley, with the September 28, 2014, burglary of Galaxy Skate, located on Ledford Mill Rd. in Tullahoma, in which several arcade machines were broken into and damaged. Wiley was identified by both Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and Manchester Police personnel after Investigator Pawlowski forwarded surveillance video footage of the suspect from another local business to the departments. Personnel were able to identify Wiley due to his having been released from the Coffee County Jail, where he had been serving time and his involvement in the burglary of the Portillo Mexican Restaurant in Manchester, TN, in 2012.
Pawlowski continued to gather evidence relating to the case and on Monday, October 20, 2014, arrested Wiley and charged him with the Burglary. Wiley is currently being held in the Coffee County Jail under a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court on November 3, 2014.
