CHS sophomore basketball player Grant Sadler

Needing a fast start against a dangerous Columbia team, Coffee County got exactly that on Friday night.  The hot shooting Lady Raiders built a 10 point lead in the first 4 minutes and coasted home to a 56 to 42 win over the Lady Lions.  Coffee County built the lead to 19 points entering the 4th quarter before a Lion rally cut the deficit 7 with just under 3 minutes to play, but Coffee County hit their free throws down the stretch to improve to 11 and 8 on the year and 2 and 3 in district play.  Holli Smithson and Bailey Morgan each had 11 points to lead the Lady Raiders in scoring.  Cameron Davis finished with 10 points.  Bailey Morgan was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 5 to 0 lead in the first minute of the boys contest before Columbia went on a 17 to 0 run outscoring Coffee County 25 to 10 in the final 7 minutes of the 1st quarter.  The physical Lions turned away several Coffee County rallies as the Red Raiders could get no closer than 12 points.  Coffee County was led in scoring by Peyton Talley who scored 16 points, Addison Carter and Grant Sadler each added 8 points as Sadler was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game.  Coffee County travels to Tullahoma on Tuesday to take on the Wildcats.  The game will begin at 6 PM with the Lawrence Family Motors pregame show beginning at 5:50 on Thunder Radio.

1/11/15 —– Janice Mae Sanders

Mrs. Janice Mae Sanders, age 73 of Morrison, Tennessee, passed from this life peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents Elmer Campbell Cowan and Mae Cowan.

She is survived by her best friend and loving husband of fifty years, Jerry Sanders, two daughters, Jennah B. Partington and husband Matthew of Loudon, New Hampshire, Joy B. White and husband Ethan of Manchester, Tennessee, one son Jerrett B. Sanders and wife Angie of Manchester, Tennessee, one brother Ronald D. Cowan and wife Regina of Mesa, Arizona and nine grandchildren.

Jann was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2012. Jann gracefully underwent treatment for her illness with never a complaint. When asked how she was doing she would usually say “not too bad today and I’m grateful for that”. Jann’s attitude as she faced this journey has been an inspiration to her family and friends who walked along side of her since she became ill. Jann grew up in Springfield, Ohio and moved with her family to Phoenix, Arizona when she was in the ninth grade. While in Arizona, Jann earned her Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Education from Arizona State University and began teaching at Phoenix Christian High School. After getting married in 1965, Jann continued to teach until she became a mother and then stayed home to raise her children.

After retiring to the state of Tennessee, Jann began teaching again. Her passion became the students who needed to earn their General Equivalency Diploma. Jann became a much loved and respected teacher of these students and was very often greeted by current or former students with hugs when she was at the grocery store, bank or out to eat. Jann was known to give students a ride home from class or give them gas money so they could get to class. She had even paid rent and utilities for students. One young lady needed glasses to see the board so Jann bought them for her. Jann’s love for people transferred to her students and they gained more than an education. They gained the confidence in what they had accomplished but also knew that they had a cheerleader who believed in them.

Jann loved the Lord Jesus. Her life was a testimony of her faith. She loved without condition, she gave without concern for herself and she lived as though Jesus was in the room with her. To Jann, her husband, her children and her grandchildren were her “earthly heart”. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A Memorial Service honoring the life of Jann will be held at the Manchester Church of the Nazarene on Sunday January 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Nashville where Jann and Jerry were the recipients of extraordinary care and compassion.

Westwood Basketball Sweeps Huntland on Thursday Night

Westwood’s Karen Medina shoots a free throw on Thursday night against HUntland

Closing out the regular season with momentum was the goal for the Rockets and Lady Rocket basketball teams on Thursday night as Huntland visited the Joel Vinson Gym at Westwood on Thursday night. In the girls game, the Hornets opened up an 8 point lead in the second quarter before the Lady Rockets closed the half out with a furious rally to trail by one at the half. That momentum carried over into the 2nd half as Westwood carried a 10 point lead into the 4th quarter. Huntland cut the deficit to 3 points after Karen Medina fouled out for Westwood, but the Lady Rockets hit their free throws down the stretch to get the 44 to 38 win to even their record at 9 and 9 on the season. Ashley Starks led Westwood with 14 points while Morgan Jones added 13 points and Medina finished with 11. The win gave Westwood a 5th place finish in the conference and will set up a rematch with Huntland in the first round of the conference tournament on Wednesday night at Forrest. The game will tip off at 4:00 PM.

The Rockets struggled through a cold shooting first half to limp into the half trailing 18 to 12. Whatever magic Coach Will Perkins cooked up in the locker room worked as Westwood scored the first 7 points of the second half to give the Rockets a 19 to 18 lead with 4:10 left in the 3rd quarter on a 13 foot jumper from Chase Simpkins. The two teams entered the 4th quarter tied at 26 as the teams traded the lead until the 2:40 mark of the 4th quarter when Jake Hollandsworth nailed a 3 pointer to put Westwood on top for good. Huntland got an open look on a 3 pointer at the buzzer that bounced off the front rim to give Westwood the 34 to 32 win. Simpkins led Westwood in scoring with 13 points, while Hollandsworth added 12 points. Marcus Pendleton finished the night with 11 points, including 7 points in the critical 3rd quarter comeback. With the win, Westwood improved to 6 and 12 on the year and will begin DRVC tournament play on Saturday as they take on Huntland. The Rockets game will tip off at 4:45 PM and will be played at Forrest.
