Playing inspired basketball for Friday night was not enough for the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders to score a pair of upsets over Shelbyville on Friday night at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym. The Lady Raiders, who led for most of the 1st quarter, trailed the Eaglettes by 4 points a minute into the 3rd quarter before falling by a final score of 56 to 36. Tyger Fenton and Cameron Davis each netted 6 points for the Lady Raiders as Coffee County dropped to 12 and 13 on the season and 2 and 8 in District 8AAA play.
The Red Raiders stretched a 4 point halftime lead to 9 points with 5 minutes left in the 3rd period before Shelbyville’s depth took effect. The Eagles outscored Coffee County 36 to 17 down the stretch to win by a final score of 58 to 48. Peyton Talley earned the Gateway Tire and Service Center Player of the Game honors as he finished with 18 points. Wyatt Day had 10 points while Addison Carter and J.P. Duncan each netted 6 points. Coffee County Middle Lady Raiders Advance to Conference Finals

The Coffee County Middle School student section cheers on the Lady Raiders in Thursday night’s CTC tournament semi-finals.
Cold free throw shooting by the Lady Raiders of Coffee Middle in the 4th quarter on Thursday night forced Thursday night’s CTC semifinal game to overtime, before Coffee County put away Warren County by a final of 41 to 38. A loud and supportive CCMS student section helped the Lady Raiders erase a 5 point 4th quarter deficit as Bella Vinson drilled a 3 pointer from the right wing with 2:29 left in the game to tie it at 29. Coffee County, who was 3 for 10 at the free throw line in the 4th quarter, could only manage a 3 point lead down the stretch which Warren County erased on a 3 pointer as time expired to send it to the extra period. All the overtime scoring was done at the free throw line as each team remained aggressive. The Lady Raiders made 5 of their last 8 free throws to grab the win and advance to Saturday’s finals with the 2 point win. Abby Morgan, who scored 6 points in the 4th quarter, nailed 2 huge free throws with 10 seconds remaining in overtime to seal the win. Morgan led Coffee County in scoring with 13 points. Lindsey Perry ended the night with 7 points and Jacey Vaughn added 6 points. With the win, Coffee County will face South Franklin on Saturday night at 5 PM in the CTC tournament finals. These two teams, who split during the regular season, tied for the regular season conference title. The Coffee Middle Red Raiders will take on White County on Friday night at 5 in the boys semifinal. Coffee County Middle School is hosting the CTC Tournament.

Local Murder Suspect Wants Bond Lowered
Connie King and Troy Lynn King are accused of killing the man. Their trial is set to begin in May, 2015.
Connie King was arrested in July of 2013 in Daytona Beach, Fla., on charges of felony murder and premeditated first-degree murder. She was returned to Coffee County July 18, 2013. She is being held under $500,000 bond.
Connie King, 38, appeared in court on Wednesday with her attorney Chris Stanford, who made a request that her bond be lowered from $500,000 to $50,000.
King’s mother Shirley Nunley testified on behalf of her daughter. Nunley told the court that her daughter would stay with her at her home in Altamont in Grundy County if she is released on bond, but said she did not think she could financially afford to post a $50,000 bond if the judge lowered it to that amount, although she would try.
Stanford told the judge that if King is released she could wear a GPS tracking device at a cost of $300 a month. Her mother testified that she would pay for the tracking device.
Judge Vanessa Jackson will decide on the bond reduction in the next few weeks.

EMPOWER Program In Need Of Adult Mentors Who Want To Make A Difference
At the beginning of a new year, we often feel compelled to look forward at the year ahead and think, “What could I do differently this year?” or “How could I improve myself as a person?” Our resolutions may lead to us to get in better physical shape, to volunteer more, to spend more quality time with our families, and so on. This year, the Coffee County Anti-Drug Coalition wants to challenge everyone to take on a resolution that will make a real difference for kids and parents in our community – Be a Mentor! Their EMPOWER program matches adult mentors with middle school students in our county who could benefit from some extra help academically. All you have to do is volunteer an hour per week. Our youth need you! Make 2015 the year of changing a life in Coffee County by making the resolution to be a Mentor! To get involved, call the Coffee County Anti-Drug Coalition office at 931-570-4484, or email Robert Ray at rray@ccantidrug.org.
