Tuesday Prep Roundup
Continuing their string of tough non-district opponents, the Red Raider soccer team traveled to Murfreesboro on Tuesday night to take on Blackman. The Raiders dominated play in the first half building a 2 to 0 lead before a furious final 3 minute flurry by the Blaze tied the game at the half 2 to 2. In that melee, the Red Raiders were issued a red card which forced them to play a man down in the second half. Coffee County out shot Blackman in the second half but fell by a final score of 4 to 2. The Red Raiders will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Ooltewah for a 6 PM game against the Owls.
The Westwood Rockets soccer team opened conference play in a winning fashion on Tuesday night as they dropped Cascade by a final score of 3 to 1. The Rockets scored twice in the first half as they dominated the time of possession. Second half substitutions allowed Cascade to play it even in the second half. Juan Penaloza scored 2 goals for the Rockets and Andres Cavalie added a goal for Westwood. The win upped the Rockets record to 2 and 1 on the season and 1 and 0 in conference play. The Rockets travel to Fayetteville on Thursday night as they will take on Fayetteville Middle. That conference game is set to kick off at 5:00 PM.
Making their second road trip in 2 days, the Lady Rockets softball team made the trek to Huntland on Tuesday night. The Lady Rockets dropped an 11 to 1 decision. Keyleigh Alford was 2 for 2 on the night with a triple. Sarah West had a triple and scored the lone Rocket run. With the loss, the Lady Rockets dropped to 1 and 2 on the season. The Lady Rockets are back on the road Thursday as they travel to Unionville to take on Community. Weather permitting; the first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Westwood Middle School first baseman Brad Perry(#22) holds a Cascade runner on in action on Tuesday afternoon at Fred Deadman Park
The sunshine this week has been a blessing to the young and inexperienced Westwood Rockets baseball team, but the lack of work caused by a wet preseason showed again on Tuesday as Cascade dropped the Rockets by a score of 24 to 1. The Rockets, who do not have an 8th grader on the roster, saw a Cascade team that banged out 26 hits. Westwood got hits from Winston Alford, Jacob Garms, Nick Smith and Blake Perry. Smith was credited with the RBI driving in Garms and Perry completed an unassisted double play to kill a Cascade rally in the 2nd inning. The Rockets travel to Cascade on Friday for a 5:30 PM rematch.
For the 2nd consecutive day, the Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider softball team breezed past the Eagles of Harris Middle by a final score of 6 to 4. The Lady Raiders scored 5 runs in the first inning and Erin Ferrell got the win in the circle for Coffee County. Haley Richardson had a pair of doubles for Coffee County while Kayleigh Harris had a double and a single and Kyla Craig had 2 singles. The win pushed the Lady Raiders record to 3 and 1 on the season. The Lady Raiders will be back at home on Thursday night as they have a makeup game scheduled with Warren County. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM, weather permitting.
Errors and passed balls spelled doom for Coffee County Middle School baseball on Tuesday night as they dropped an 11 to 2 decision in Shelbyville to Harris. The Raider bats were stymied by by the Eagles pitching as Coffee County could only muster 3 hits on the game. Clayton Lowell, Tyler Surber and Scottie Duke got the hits for the Raiders. In JV action, the Raiders fell 6 to 3 in a game that was not decided until the last inning. With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 1-1-1 on the season and 1 and 1 in conference play. The Red Raiders will take on North Franklin in Winchester on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM. The JV Raiders have a 2 game series with North Franklin scheduled for Thursday and Friday of this week. Thursday night’s game will be held at CCMS, with the Friday game at Winchester. Both games are set to begin at 6:00 PM and will be played, weather permitting.

The Coffee County Red Raider baseball team opened the 2015 season hosting District 8-AAA foe Shelbyville. After the first inning the Raiders led the Eagles 3-1. Shelbyville cut it to 3-2 with a run in the fourth. In the 6th the Eagles plated 5 runs to take a 7-3 advantage. That score held up as the Raiders dropped game one of the year.
Stanton Keele had 2 hits and an RBI for Coffee County and was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game. Trace Friedlein added a hit and an RBI. Friedlein pitched the first 4 innings and had 9 K’s.

Gas Prices Starting To Fall
Gas prices fell for the eighth consecutive day Sunday. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is nearly 3 cents cheaper than a week ago, but 18 cents more expensive than last month. Still, Sunday’s average price of $2.43 is $1.27 less than the peak price last year, saving motorists more than $19 for a full tank of gas.
“The price of oil has not seen dramatic increases in the past couple of weeks and motorists are reaping the benefits,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Gas prices are at their lowest level this time of year since 2009, which will entice people to take a road trip this spring.”
The price of oil dropped like a rock last week, which could signal lower prices at the pump in the coming weeks.
Currently Tennessee’s average price per gallon is $2.19. The low price in Manchester is $2.06 and the low price in Tullahoma is an even $2 per gallon.
Two Women Charged With Embezzlement
Two women were charged with embezzlement from a Shelbyville business by the Bedford County grand jury Monday.
Melissa Martin and Jessica Estrada were indicted on direct presentment. Martin was charged with theft over $60,000, while Estrada was charged with theft over $10,000.
A total of $144,000 was allegedly embezzled from A-1 Quick Cash by the pair.
Shelbyville Police Detective Lt. Brian Crews said that Martin had claimed on Dec. 30, 2013 she had been kidnapped at gunpoint from the parking lot of the business and was later charged with filing a false report.
Both are free on $100,000 bond and turned themselves into authorities Monday morning.
Consumer Groups to TVA: Don’t Forget Us in Your Plan

The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and other groups are concerned that TVA’s 2015 Integrated Resource Plan doesn’t go far enough for consumers or the environment. They also fear safety risks at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant. Photo credit: TVA
Two steps forward, one step back. That’s the evaluation by clean-energy groups of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s annual plan on how the federal utility will generate electricity in the future. Groups such as the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Southern Environmental Law Center say the plan does address the reduction of emissions to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Clean Power Plan. Where it falls short, said Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance, is addressing the rising costs of consumer electric bills. “We are pleased that the plan continues to move forward with TVA’s commitment to retire coal plants,” he said. “Where we’re disappointed is we feel that TVA is not pursuing all cost-effective energy efficiency that helps customers save money.” Also this week, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy filed their reply with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding a safety concern involving the second reactor at TVA’s Watts Bar nuclear plant in Rhea County. Investigations indicate the site is at risk if an earthquake struck or flooding occurred. A spokesperson for TVA said “both units at Watts Bar nuclear plant are designed to withstand seismic events that are likely to occur in east Tennessee.” The Integrated Resource Plan is a draft at this point, and the public and other parties are invited to attend meetings hosted by TVA over the next two months. While the plan does include solar power, Smith said when it comes to wind power, the draft is lacking. “We also feel like they’re not fully capturing what the potential is in the IRP for renewable energy,” he said. “We think there are some really interesting projects on the horizon and we think that they need to be careful in how they model those projects.” TVA has said they won’t immediately use the wind generated by the Plains and Clean Line Project, which will transfer energy generated by wind in Oklahoma to the Southeast, but Smith and others hope they reconsider that plan. Four years ago, the utility committed to become a leader in energy efficiency, but each year TVA has cut its budget for implementing more energy-efficiency efforts.
