Soccer ballContinuing their string of tough non-district opponents, the Red Raider soccer team traveled to Murfreesboro on Tuesday night to take on Blackman.  The Raiders dominated play in the first half building a 2 to 0 lead before a furious final 3 minute flurry by the Blaze tied the game at the half 2 to 2.  In that melee, the Red Raiders were issued a red card which forced them to play a man down in the second half.  Coffee County out shot Blackman in the second half but fell by a final score of 4 to 2.   The Red Raiders will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Ooltewah for a 6 PM game against the Owls.

The Westwood Rockets soccer team opened conference play in a winning fashion on Tuesday night as they dropped Cascade by a final score of 3 to 1.  The Rockets scored twice in the first half as they dominated the time of possession.  Second half substitutions allowed Cascade to play it even in the second half.  Juan Penaloza scored 2 goals for the Rockets and Andres Cavalie added a goal for Westwood.  The win upped the Rockets record to 2 and 1 on the season and 1 and 0 in conference play.  The Rockets travel to Fayetteville on Thursday night as they will take on Fayetteville Middle.  That conference game is set to kick off at 5:00 PM.

Westwood helmetMaking their second road trip in 2 days, the Lady Rockets softball team made the trek to Huntland on Tuesday night.  The Lady Rockets dropped an 11 to 1 decision.  Keyleigh Alford was 2 for 2 on the night with a triple.  Sarah West had a triple and scored the lone Rocket run.  With the loss, the Lady Rockets dropped to 1 and 2 on the season.  The Lady Rockets are back on the road Thursday as they travel to Unionville to take on Community.  Weather permitting; the first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

The sunshine this week has been a blessing to the young and inexperienced Westwood Rockets baseball team, but the lack of work caused by a wet preseason showed again on Tuesday as Cascade dropped the Rockets by a score of 24 to 1.  The Rockets, who do not have an 8th grader on the roster, saw a Cascade team that banged out 26 hits.  Westwood got hits from Winston Alford, Jacob Garms, Nick Smith and Blake Perry.  Smith was credited with the RBI driving in Garms and Perry completed an unassisted double play to kill a Cascade rally in the 2nd inning.  The Rockets travel to Cascade on Friday for a 5:30 PM rematch.

For the 2nd consecutive day, the Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider softball team breezed past the Eagles of Harris Middle by a final score of 6 to 4.  The Lady Raiders scored 5 runs in the first inning and Erin Ferrell got the win in the circle for Coffee County.  Haley Richardson had a pair of doubles for Coffee County while Kayleigh Harris had a double and a single and Kyla Craig had 2 singles.  The win pushed the Lady Raiders record to 3 and 1 on the season.  The Lady Raiders will be back at home on Thursday night as they have a makeup game scheduled with Warren County.  First pitch is set for 5:00 PM, weather permitting.

Errors and passed balls spelled doom for Coffee County Middle School baseball on Tuesday night as they dropped an 11 to 2 decision in Shelbyville to Harris.  The Raider bats were stymied by by the Eagles pitching as Coffee County could only muster 3 hits on the game.  Clayton Lowell, Tyler Surber and Scottie Duke got the hits for the Raiders.  In JV action, the Raiders fell 6 to 3 in a game that was not decided until the last inning.   With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 1-1-1 on the season and 1 and 1 in conference play.  The Red Raiders will take on North Franklin in Winchester on Monday.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.  The JV Raiders have a 2 game series with North Franklin scheduled for Thursday and Friday of this week.  Thursday night’s game will be held at CCMS, with the Friday game at Winchester.  Both games are set to begin at 6:00 PM and will be played, weather permitting.
