5/2/15 —- Myrtle Bell

Myrtle Bell, age 81 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on April 30, 2015 at the Manchester Health Care Center.

She was a retired employee of Findlay Industries in Morrison, TN and had worked as a Bookkeeper and Payroll Clerk for many years with PCA Apparel Industries, Inc., and Eden Industries, Inc. in Manchester. She was a member of the Morrison Church of Christ.

She was born in Morrison, TN to her parents, the late Joseph Dee Bell and Mamie Grace Parker Bell. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dena Bell Driver.

She is survived by her son, James “Vic” Bell (Susan Floyd) of Manchester, TN; grandson, Jacob Dylan Bell of Manchester, TN; and many friends.

Raiders Fall Despite Sandavol’s Effort

The District 8-AAA baseball tournament began for the Coffee County Red Raiders on Thursday night in Winchester.
The Franklin County Rebels scored a run in the 1st and that’s all they needed as Gus Barstad would hold the Raiders to just 2 hits on the night. The Rebels score the only other run in the game in the 4th to make the final 2-0. Peyton Booth and Brandon Haston had the only hits for Coffee County.
Pitcher Dylan Sandavol allowed just one earned run and was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game.

The Raiders will play at home on Saturday afternoon at 1pm in a loser’s bracket game.

tennis RacketAfter having their tennis match on Wednesday canceled due to a bomb threat at Shelbyville, the Westwood Rocket tennis teams returned to action on Thursday as they traveled to Tullahoma. The veteran Wildcats teams swept Westwood boys 9-0 while the girls got beat 7-2. Lacey Deason and Natalie Elzeer had the wins for Westwood in singles play. The Rockets will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Sewanee to take on St. Andrew’s. The singles matches will start at 4:00 PM.

The Westwood Rocket team fought hard against conference leading Forrest on Thursday but had no answer for the visiting Rockets as they fell 17 to 1. Westwood’s bats were silenced until the 4th inning as Forrest held Westwood hitless in the first 3 innings with 7 strikeouts. In the 4th, Westwood got hits from Winston Alford and Byron Sullivan and used 2 Forrest errors to score Sullivan. Sullivan was the lone bright spot offensively for Westwood as he was 1 for 1 with a walk and a run scored. Defensively, Alford had 6 putouts at shortstop and a pair of assists. The game marked the end of the regular season for Westwood as they will next be in action in the conference tournament starting on Friday, May 8th. The Rockets opponent and location will be announced later.

A strong regular season gave way to a short postseason as the Coffee County Middle School baseball team fell 14 to 1 to South Franklin on Thursday in the first round of the CTC Conference Tournament in Sparta. A rash of errors and walks spelled doom for the Red Raiders as the bats went cold against the Trojans. Coffee County was held to only 3 hits as Cody Esslinger, Hayden Skipper and Tyler Serber were credited with hits and Trace Bryant scored the lone Raider run. With the loss, the Red Raiders ended the season with a record of 9 wins, 7 losses and a tie.

Erin Ferrell tossed a 2 hitter and the Coffee County Middle School softball banged out hits as they routed South Franklin 16 to 1 in the first round of the CTC Conference softball tournament. The Lady Raiders had 4 different players with 2 hits each. Haley Richardson had a double and a triple with 3 RBI. Ashley Evans had a double and a single while Amanda Mukai had 2 hits and reached base when she was hit by a pitch. Shannah Frame was 2 for 3 on the night with 2 singles. With the win, the Lady Raiders will take on Tullahoma on Friday night beginning at 7:00 PM at East Middle School in Tullahoma.

5/3/15 —- LOIS LOUISE HEREFORD

LOIS LOUISE HEREFORD, age 85, of North Miami, Florida, departed this life, Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Jackson North Hospital in North Miami.

flower 23She was born on June 16, 1929, in Princeton, Alabama to the late Albert and Florence Walls Hereford.

Ms. Hereford was a New York City fashion model in the clothing industry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

Ms. Hereford is survived by her remaining sisters; Shirley Hereford of Decherd, Tenn., Betty Jean Walker of the Greenhaw Community, Brenda Johnson and her husband, Charles of Estill Springs, Tenn., Barbara Bouton and her husband, Ernie of Manchester, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 3, 2015, from 12:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. at Grant Funeral Services.

Services will also be on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. from the chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Brother Anthony Roberts, officiating.

Interment will follow at Mt. Garner Cemetery in Decherd.

5/1/15 —- Kathryn Ramsey Hickerson

Funeral services for Mrs. Kathryn Ramsey Hickerson, age 86, of Manchester will be conducted Friday, May 1, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel with Brother Charles Williams officiating.

Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hickerson passed away peacefully Wednesday,  April 29, 2015 in Manchester.

She was born December 31, 1928 in Coffee County, Tennessee the daughter of the late H.B. Ramsey and Sally St. John Ramsey.

She attended Coffee County Central High School, where she met the love of her life, J.D. Hickerson, and the two married April 8, 1950. In earlier years while raising their family, Mr. & Mrs. Hickerson enjoyed gardening together, he providing the vegetables and she doing the canning. During the 1970’s, Mrs. Hickerson served as Clerk with the Coffee County Circuit Court. Known as Grana to her grandchildren and most everyone else, Mrs. Hickerson was happiest spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to read and was a long standing member of Main Street Church of Christ. Most recently she resided at McArthur Manor where she was reunite with old friends and made many new friends, especially among the staff. She will be forever remembered by her loving family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, J.D. Hickerson, September 27, 2008; an infant son, John Wiley Hickerson; and four sisters, Virginia Holt, Leona Campbell, Jane Wiseman and Peggy McKenzie.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Jo Keele and husband, Stanley of Manchester; and Kim Floied also of Manchester; five grandchildren, Jeff Keele and wife, Beverly; Jenn Nogodula and husband, Jay; Julie Keele; Katie Roberts and husband, Chris; and Joseph Floied; and six great-grandchildren, Riley and Audrey Ruth Keele; Jaydee and Jenslee Kathryn Nogodula; Hunter and Lyla Roberts and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dusty Elam Foundation or one’s favorite charity in memory of Mrs. Hickerson.

Mr. William A. Davis, age 63 of Manchester, Tennessee passed away, Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at his residence.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 2 at 1 PM at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manchester.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 11 AM until the service time.

Mr. Davis, a native of Sunbright, TN, was the son of the late James A and Nancy Jennings Davis. flower 11

He was a farmer and enjoyed selling vegetables. He also enjoyed working in his yard. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and enjoyed listening to gospel music and watching tele-evangelists.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Davis and two sisters, Glenna Cochran and Betty Thompson.

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Karen Davis of Manchester; two sons, William Davis and his wife, Delilah of Manchester and Tim Banks of Ft. Wayne, IN; two daughters, Cathirine Davis Forbes and her husband, Ben of Manchester and Austella Davis of McMinnville; one brother, Willard Davis of Cincinnati, OH; seven sisters, Leona Musser of Cincinnati, OH, Thelma Means and her husband, Charles, Lorene Thompson, Lela Thompson and her husband, Ray, Lule Cooper and her husband, Ray and Effie Monroe and her husband, Emmett, all of Manchester and Eva Bass and her husband, Eddie of Cowan; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Senior Pitcher Brianna Jones of the Coffee County Lady Raiders has been named the MaxPreps/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Southern Region player of the week.
Jones was tremendous in the circle last week for the Red Raiders, posting a 3-0 mark without allowing a run and surrendering just three hits in 18.2 inning of work last week. She threw a pair of one-hit shutouts and struck out 37 batters to just four walks. In a 3-0 victory over Tullahoma, Jones was masterful as she struck out 17, walked two and allowed just one hit. She followed that with a five-inning, 10-strikeout blanking of Warren County. The senior right-hander kicked off her week tossing 6.2 innings of one-hit scoreless ball with 10 strikeouts during a 2-0 triumph over Lawrence County. For the week, she held her opponents to a .050 batting average.

Fatal Accident In Summitville

Fatal-Crash2One person was killed in a two vehicle crash Wednesday morning at the intersection of Highway 55 and Pete Sain Road.
According to a report by Tennessee Highway Patrolman Corey Stuart, Edith Cox, 70, of Manchester was killed in the accident that occurred around 11:30 a.m.
According to the trooper’s report, Cox was driving a 1998 Ford car across State Highway 55 at the intersection of Pete Sain Road and Highway 55 and failed to yield to a 2005 Ford pickup operated by Helen Harrell, 36, of McMinnville.
Harrell’s vehicle then struck Cox’s vehicle in the passenger side door.
According to the THP, Cox was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
