tennis RacketAfter having their tennis match on Wednesday canceled due to a bomb threat at Shelbyville, the Westwood Rocket tennis teams returned to action on Thursday as they traveled to Tullahoma. The veteran Wildcats teams swept Westwood boys 9-0 while the girls got beat 7-2. Lacey Deason and Natalie Elzeer had the wins for Westwood in singles play. The Rockets will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Sewanee to take on St. Andrew’s. The singles matches will start at 4:00 PM.

The Westwood Rocket team fought hard against conference leading Forrest on Thursday but had no answer for the visiting Rockets as they fell 17 to 1. Westwood’s bats were silenced until the 4th inning as Forrest held Westwood hitless in the first 3 innings with 7 strikeouts. In the 4th, Westwood got hits from Winston Alford and Byron Sullivan and used 2 Forrest errors to score Sullivan. Sullivan was the lone bright spot offensively for Westwood as he was 1 for 1 with a walk and a run scored. Defensively, Alford had 6 putouts at shortstop and a pair of assists. The game marked the end of the regular season for Westwood as they will next be in action in the conference tournament starting on Friday, May 8th. The Rockets opponent and location will be announced later.

A strong regular season gave way to a short postseason as the Coffee County Middle School baseball team fell 14 to 1 to South Franklin on Thursday in the first round of the CTC Conference Tournament in Sparta. A rash of errors and walks spelled doom for the Red Raiders as the bats went cold against the Trojans. Coffee County was held to only 3 hits as Cody Esslinger, Hayden Skipper and Tyler Serber were credited with hits and Trace Bryant scored the lone Raider run. With the loss, the Red Raiders ended the season with a record of 9 wins, 7 losses and a tie.

Erin Ferrell tossed a 2 hitter and the Coffee County Middle School softball banged out hits as they routed South Franklin 16 to 1 in the first round of the CTC Conference softball tournament. The Lady Raiders had 4 different players with 2 hits each. Haley Richardson had a double and a triple with 3 RBI. Ashley Evans had a double and a single while Amanda Mukai had 2 hits and reached base when she was hit by a pitch. Shannah Frame was 2 for 3 on the night with 2 singles. With the win, the Lady Raiders will take on Tullahoma on Friday night beginning at 7:00 PM at East Middle School in Tullahoma.
