The Westwood Rockets tennis teams dropped their final scheduled tennis match of the year on Wednesday night in Fayetteville.  The Rockets could not get a match win against Riverside Christian as the boys fell 8 to 0 while the girls fell 9 to 0.  2015 was the inaugural season for Westwood tennis and Coach Justin Winton was proud of the progress his team made throughout the season.  Winton said that he saw improvement in all the players of which few had any tennis experience at all.  Coach Winton is holding out hope that a previously cancelled matches with Shelbyville and St. Andrew’s can be rescheduled before the end of the school year.

Wednesday Night Win Pushes Red Raider Soccer to District Finals

Four 1st half goals staked the Coffee County CHS soccer team to a 4 to 1 halftime lead and a furious 2nd half Shelbyville rally fell short as the Red Raiders defeated the Eagles by a final score of 5 to 3 on Wednesday night. Coffee County got off to a fast start getting 4 shots on goal in the first 3 minutes before Paco Barrera redirected a deflected free kick past the keeper at the 7 minute mark to get Coffee County on the board first. His brother Abelene Barrera tallied a goal a minute later and Breyer Taylor added a 3rd goal at 15 to put the Raiders in the driver’s seat early. Shelbyville tightened up their defense but could not mount an attack against Coffee County. Breyer Taylor notched his second goal at the 27 minute mark on a beautiful fake to get around the keeper and it looked like the rout was on. But Shelbyville responded with a goal in the 36th minute and then opened up the second half with goals at the 54th and 56th minute to put the home standing Raider fans on edge. A huge save by keeper Lafredo Ramirez in the 60th minute seemed to change the momentum and Paco Barrera nailed his second goal of the night in the 68th minute to put the game out of reach. With the win, Coffee County will play for a district title on Friday night in Columbia.  The district title match will kick off at 7:00 PM. The win also guarantees the Raiders a berth on the Region 4AAA Tournament which begins next Monday.

Scam Warning From Sheriff Graves

scam4Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves has issued a warning about another scam making the rounds in Coffee County. “It has been here in the past but it seems to have started again,” the sheriff said Tuesday.
The scammers call an individual poising as a deputy from the sheriff’s department. “They say that they are a deputy and that the person they are calling that they failed to show up for jury duty,” the sheriff said. The fake deputy then tells their intended victim that there is a warrant for their arrest, but to keep from being arrested they can pay a fine and the warrant will go away. “They tell their victim to get Green Dot card and call them and give them the number off of it,” Graves said. “They use the Green Dot numbers like a credit card and can the money from the cards.”
The sheriff stated that the sheriff’s department does not call people and ask for money like that.
Several people have fallen for the scam and have paid the scammers. The sheriff that they have called several locations with their scam.

May is “National Drug Court Month”

coffee county drug courtSince 2003 Recovery Drug Courts in Tennessee have offered intensive judicial supervision, substance treatment services, sanctions, and incentives to address the needs of drug-addicted non-violent offenders. The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse has been providing funding for the courts since 2012.
May is “National Drug Court Month” and Tennessee is joining with courts across the country that are demonstrating how a combination of accountability and compassion is the foundation for handling individuals addicted to drugs in the criminal justice system.
Douglas Varney, Commissioner, Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services says, “By treating those who are struggling with substance abuse, we can save taxpayer money, promote public safety and reduce drug abuse in communities.”

Just a few of the benefits of Recovery Drug Court:

  • Reducing correctional costs
  • Protecting community safety
  • Improving public welfare
  • Across the U.S. more than 3,000 Recovery Drug Courts including Coffee County offer communities a judicially-supervised court docket. In Drug Courts, seriously drug-addicted individuals remain in treatment for long periods of time while under close supervision.

Research continues to show that Recovery Drug Courts work better than jail or prison, better than probation, and better than treatment alone.

Tennessee Residents Remain Concerned About Nuclear Facility

Residents of northeast Tennessee are speaking out against what they say is a questionable safety record of Nuclear Fuel Services, located in Erwin.
The manufacturing facility makes materials for the U.S. Navy and for private companies. Recently the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission
announced it was reducing the number of regular safety inspections NFS will undergo, and that concerns Barbara O’Neal.
“I was born and raised there,” she said. “It’s really my hometown, and I feel that the people have been told by the NRC for years that everything was OK.”
O’Neal recently moved away from Erwin because of safety concerns, citing public documents that detail incidents at the facility where the environment was exposed to toxic materials.
The National Research Council is conducting a study of cancer risks
in Erwin and at five other nuclear facilities around the nation. A spokeswoman from the NRC said the government is reducing the number of inspectors present at the facility to one because of an improved safety and compliance record.
NFS did not return requests for comment for this story.
O’Neal said she has analyzed thousands of pages of public documents that detail incidents of spills and releases of pollutants that exceed the legal limits. She said much of the information wasn’t available until 2004, and even what she can obtain lacks some details.
“There is not that much available,” she said. “The NRC has kept information like inspection reports, effluent releases – they’ve kept all of that stuff away from the public for years.”
In April, NFS had an unplanned chemical reaction in a storage area. No one was hurt and the incident is under investigation.
A government investigation in 2006 discovered there was a uranium solution leak into an elevator shaft that could have caused a nuclear reaction.
