The Westwood Rockets and Lady Rockets welcomed Moore County to Joel Vinson Gym on Thursday night as they hosted a Teddy Bear Toss. The Lady Rockets outscored Moore County 12 to 2 in the 2nd quarter and held off a late Raiderette ally to win 41 to 32 in girls action. Morgan Jones and Ashley Starks led the Rockets on both ends of the floor as they forced 8 second quarter turnovers. Jones led all scorers with 17 points and Starks poured in 14 for Westwood. Kynleigh Fanning led Moore County with 14. With the win, Westwood improved to 9 and 7 on the year. Morgan Jones was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center Player of the Game.
In the boys contest, the Rockets held Moore County scoreless in the 1st quarter and to 2 points in the 3rd quarter in route to a 44 to 26 win in the nightcap. Marcus Pendleton led Westwood in scoring as he had 18 points to earn the Gateway Tire and Service Center Player of the Game award. Chase Simpkins added 10 points for Westwood while Julius Dixon of Moore County led all scorers with 21 points. With the win, the Rockets improved to 5 and 11 on the year.
At halftime of the boys game, Westwood hosted a Teddy Bear Toss to collect toys for the Manchester Fire and Police Departments. Nearly 150 bears were collected in the event as Leo Botello won a gift basket for tossing his stuffed animal closest to the center court circle. The stuffed animals will be used as “comfort bears” for children during times of loss or crisis by the fire and police departments with the remainder going to the Manchester Police Departments Toy Drive.
