Motlow Players To Continue Education and Athletic Careers At Four-Year Universities, Plus Basketball Camp
Two former Motlow College student athletes will continue their education and athletic careers at four-year universities following outstanding sophomore seasons at Motlow. Both recently earned their associate degree during Motlow’s May 10 graduation ceremonies. Makenzie Hopkins from Cornersville signed to continue playing softball at Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tenn. Hopkins was a two-year starter for the Lady Bucks at shortstop and completed her career with a .359 batting average. She hit .373 during the 2014 season with 10 doubles and 29 runs batted in. Former Raider Golfer Receives National Honor
By virtue of her commitment to excellence on the course and in the classroom, Martin Methodist Women’s Golf member Brittany Kriz, a former Coffee County golfer has been named to the 2014 NAIA Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete team Kriz was one of 118 women’s golf student-athletes that were honored for their athletic and academic successes. The RedHawk golfer also received the honor last year. Kriz who just graduated from Martin-Methodist is from Manchester. The Coffee County softball team has used aggressive base running and strong pitching to a charm all season long. Those 2 weapons served the Lady Raiders to perfection in a 2 to 0 win over Maryville on Thursday in the elimination round at the Spring Fling state championships. Two Track Athletes Close Out Year
Freshman Karson Young jumped a personal best 34 feet on her first attempt as she finished in 12th place in the TSSAA Spring Fling Track Meet on Thursday at MTSU. Young, who only began competing in the triple jump in April, was seeded 15th coming into the meetafter qualifying at 32 feet, 6 inches. Young hit her takeoff perfectly on her approach but came up 8 inches short of advancing to the medal round. Brianna Jones allowed only one earned run, but the Coffee County Lady Raiders lost 3-0 to Dickson County on Wednesday in the TSSAA State Softball Tournament. Four Lady Raider errors contributed heavily in the loss. Pitcher Brooklin Lee was strong for the Lady Cougars as she pitched seven shutout innings striking out 13, walking two and she surrendered only four hits. Haley Banks Competes In 110M Hurdles
Haley Banks ran a time of 16.02 in the preliminary round of the 100M hurdles on Wednesday in the TSSAA Spring Fling state track meet being held at MTSU. That time was not good enough to qualify her for the finals. Haley will compete in the shot put finals on Thursday morning. Karson Young will compete in the triple jump finals on Thursday as well.
