The Lady Raider basketball team opened both halves strong in a 60 to 25 win over the host Lady Tigers on Friday to claim 5th place in the Whitwell Christmas Tournament.  Holding Whitwell scoreless in the 1st quarter and dominating the 3rd quarter was enough to give the Lady Raiders a 2 and 1 record on the tournament. Juuse Saros made a strong case for more playing time Friday night. The 21-year-old from Finland got his first career shutout, Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist and the Nashville Predators beat the St. Louis Blues 4-0. Saros made 25 saves and impressed Predators coach Peter Laviolette. “He made some important saves throughout the game and he made some big saves at the end of the game,” Laviolette said. Saros, playing in just his seventh career game, won for the second time on the road. He’s allowed more than one goal once in six games this season...

After falling to tournament runner-up Grainger on Tuesday, the Red Raider basketball team won 2 straight games in the King of the Smokies Tournament at Pigeon Forge to capture 5th place on Thursday.  Coffee County outlasted Cullman, AL on Thursday 62 to 58.  The Red Raiders were 11 of 16 at the free throw line in the 4th quarter to hold on for the win. Forcing 32 turnovers by Sale Creek and hitting 11 of their 15 free throws lifted the Coffee County Lady Raider basketball team to a 70 to 29 trouncing of Sale Creek on Thursday morning in the Whitwell Christmas Tournament.  The Lady Raiders opened up with the first 9 points of the game and never trailed. Despite the 9 AM start, the Lady Raiders were wide awake at the opening tip as they raced out to a 19 to 2 lead in the first 6 minutes.  Sale Creek was able to cut the lead to 8 in the second period...
