Former Coffee County Lady Raider now Motlow Freshman second baseman Veronica Blackburn slammed a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning on Friday. Classmate Roxanne Hillman pitched seven innings of three-hit softball as the Motlow Lady Bucks ended their regular season with a 4-1 victory over Roane State.
The win propels the Lady Bucks (19-26, 5-13) into seventh place in the final Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) standings. The TCCAA/Region VII Tournament begins Sunday at Chattanooga State.
The Lady Bucks will face 10th-seed Dyersburg State in one of two ‘play-in’ games on Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. The first ‘play-in’ game features Roane State and Jackson State at 2 p.m. The two winning teams will advance to the full tournament beginning Monday, May 7.
With two outs Blackburn, who has been one of the Lady Bucks’ hottest hitters of late, connected on her second home run in the past week to give Hillman all the runs she needed. Motlow had eight hits on the day, including two each by Kayla Green, Blackburn and Shelby Webb.
The Motlow Bucks were swept in a three-game series this weekend at Volunteer State. The Pioneers won Friday’s opening game 13-7, and swept Saturday’s doubleheader 7-4, 8-4.
