Both Coffee County Middle School teams opened the 2014-2015 season in Woodbury on Tuesday night as they opened play in the Woodbury Border War Preseason Tournament with victories. The Lady Raiders, held Westside to no more than 4 points in each quarter on the way to a 44 to 9 win. Eight Lady Raiders tallied points on the night as Coffee County was led in scoring by Jacey Vaughn who had 11 points while Lindsey Perry, Abby Morgan and Alisha Jennings each finished with 6 points. With the win, the Lady Raiders advance to Thursday night’s semifinals where they will take on Woodland. That game will tip off at 4:30 PM at Woodbury Grammar School.
The Red Raiders outscored DeKalb Middle 19 to 9 in the 2nd half to get a come from behind win in the 1st round of the Woodbury Border War Preseason Tournament. Trailing 18 to 10 at the half, the Red Raiders cranked up the defensive pressure in the 2nd half and hit 7 of their 8 field-goal attempts to earn the 29 to 27 win. Weston Hargrove led Coffee County on points with 13 points while Briggs Haithcock added 2 2nd half 3 Pointers to finish with 6 points. Nathaniel Horne added 4 points as the Raiders advance to Thursday’s semifinals where they will take on Central Magnet at 5:45 PM at the Woodbury Grammar School.
The 6th grade Lady Raiders made it a sweep for Coffee County Middle on Tuesday as they blasted South Franklin 42 to 14 in a single contest at Coffee County Middle School. The Lady Raiders defense held the visitors to 2 field goals in the first half as they raced out to a 27 to 8 halftime lead. Coffee County was led in scoring by the familiar “inside/outside” tandem of Bella Vinson and Keri Munn as the 2 combined for 33 of the 42 Lady Raider points. Vinson had 6 three pointers on the night as she finished with 22 points. Munn scored 11 points with 8 points coming in the paint and 3 free throws. With the win, Coffee County improved to 6 and 1 on the year. The Raiders and Lady Raiders travel to Sparta on Thursday night to take on White County. Tipoff for the girls game is 6:00 PM.
