Mrs. Gratis Carlisle “Mutt” Meacham, age 94 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Manchester Health Care Center.
Mrs. Meacham was born in Boston, Tennessee in Williamson County and was the third child of six children born to her parents, Moses Thomas Carlisle and Lola Thompson Carlisle.
She was very mischievous as a child and that is how she earned her nickname “Mutt”. She was very athletic and participated in track and earned the record as highest jumper in the county. She also enjoyed basketball and served as a basketball captain. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper with a company in Nashville for many years.
She married Donald N. Meacham in 1956 after he retired from the U.S. Navy. Gratis and Donald owned and operated a family restaurant where she specialized in great casseroles and desserts. Gratis and Donald attended the Red Hill Church of Christ in Manchester for many years. Donald passed away in 1993.
Mrs. Meacham was also preceded in death by her sister, Gertie Byrd; and brothers, Garland Carlisle and Gilman Carlisle.
She is survived by her daughter, Teri A. Meacham Phillips of Manchester, TN; grandchildren, Christopher Phillips and Courtney Phillips both of Manchester, TN; brother German Carlisle (Sue) of Goodletsville, TN; sister, Gwendolyn Lampley of Franklin, TN; and special friend, Matilda Locke of Manchester, TN.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 17, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
The Funeral Service will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon, September 18, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Central Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at the Shady Grove Cemetery.
