Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer on Wednesday announced Safe Routes to School funding for the City of Manchester totaling $26,900. The City of Manchester will utilize the Safe Routes to School funds for a School Activity Plan for Westwood Elementary and Westwood Middle Schools. This award will fund educational programs and promotional activities to encourage walking and biking as a practical and healthy initiative for approximately 920 students. Many Students Signing Up For Tennessee Promise

More than 800 students have already signed up for the Tennessee Promise in less than a week since enrollment opened. The Tennessee Promise was signed into law in May and gives the opportunity for every graduating senior in Tennessee to attend community or technical college for free. Since enrollment opened last Friday, an average of 200 applications a day have been turned in. The Tennessee Promise will not be paid for by taxpayer dollars. Tennessee’s composite ACT score showed its largest gain in more than a decade, and increased more than it has since the state began testing all students in 2010, according to scores released by ACT.
