Sometimes a tie feels less than fulfilling in middle school soccer, but Westwood got a goal in the last minute to get a much desired draw against Fayetteville on Tuesday night at Dyer-Bouldin Field. The Lady Rockets managed one shot on goal in the first half, but 2 saves from keeper Naylei Ramirez kept the match tied at 0 at the break. Fayetteville pressed the attack in the early part of the second half getting a goal in the 35th minute on a nice drive at the front of the net from Emma King. 4 more saves by Ramirez kept the match close, but the Tigers defense kept Westwood’s scoring leader Jessica Barrera bottled up most of the 2nd half until Reyna Flores got a ball on her foot on a beautiful feed in the last minute. From there, Barrera buried the equalizer to provide the welcome draw. Ramirez finished the night with 6 saves in 7 attempts to earn the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game honors. After a first half lightning delay, the Raiders trailed 8 to 0 at the half. 7th grade QB Andrew Mahaffey broke free for a 35 TD scamper with 3:55 left in 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 8 to 6. Things were looking good for Coffee County on Friday night as the Red Raiders jumped to an early lead over Rhea County. In the home opener Coffee County got on the scoreboard first when Jimmy Hollandsworth connected with Cody Howes on a 71-yard TD pass to take a 6-0 advantage. The bad news, the Raiders would not score again falling 42-6 to the Eagles.
Rhea County returned almost all their starters from last year’s team that made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs. The run defense of Raiders played well and forced the Eagles to pass the ball and it worked out as Noel Patterson caught two touchdown passes. He also returned a punt for 53-yards for his 3rd TD.
Jimmy Hollandsworth led the Raiders offensively with 110 yards passing. On defense Thomas Buholzer had 8 tackles and a sack and that earned him the Gateway Tire & Service Center player of the game.

Westwood’s Reyna Flores(#21) drills a goal past the Community keeper on THursday night in middle school soccer action.

The Lady Rockets soccer team fought to a 2 to 2 draw on Thursday evening at Dyer-Bouldin with visiting Community.  The Lady Rockets outshot the Vikqueens 11 to 4 on the match, and 5 to 1 in the last 15 minutes, but could never get the go-ahead goal.  The Lady Rockets got on the board first in the 7th minute as Reyna Flores sent a brilliant across the goal face past Community’s diving keeper.  Community tied it in the 18th minute and looked to seize the momentum, but the Lady Rockets rallied getting 2 great scoring chances that they were unable to convert sending the match to the half tied at 1.    Community took a 2 to 1 lead in the 35th on a toe punch from Anna Katherine Lemmons only to have Jessica Barrera tie it in the 40th minute on a great individual effort in front of the goal.  From that point on, Westwood controlled the tempo and time of possession but could not find the back of the net in the final 20 minutes.  With the draw, Westwood’s record stands at 1-1-2 on the season.  The Lady Rockets will play host to Fayetteville on Tuesday night in a 5:30 match at Dyer-Bouldin Field.
