CHS Tennis Sweeps Franklin County on Tuesday

The Coffee County CHS tennis teams got a pair of wins on Tuesday afternoon in their first district contest of the season as they hosted Franklin County at Fred Deadman Park. The Lady Raiders got singles wins from Maddie Taylor, Ali Shelton, Kayla Wright, Makayla Morgan and Emily Shelton plus doubles wins from the teams of Shelton/Taylor and Morgan/Anna Harrell for the 7 to 0 win over the inexperienced Franklin County netters.

The Red Raiders also made quick work of the Rebels as they got singles wins from Trevor Ivy-Bodman, Jared Hu, Shlip Patel, Reid Lawrence and Evan Harrell. The doubles teams of Ivey/Bodman/Hu and Lawrence/Grey Riddle also captured wins on the night. Coach Mike Ray was “pleased with our teams efforts. We played hard and took care of business. Both Raider teams are back in action on Friday at 4 PM in Woodbury as they take on Cannon County.

A nine run 2nd inning sparked the Westwood Lady Rockets softball team to a 20 to 10 win over Huntland on Tuesday night in the home opener at Lady Rocket Field. Westwood banged out 8 hits and took advantage of 18 walks on the night. Madison Hershman had 4 walks in 4 plate appearances and scored 3 runs. Madison Wakefield, Hallie Wimberley and Haidyn Campbell all had 2 hits apiece. Campbell had 4 RBI on the night including a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the 5th to provide the 10 run advantage to end the contest due to the mercy rule. In the circle, Campbell had 6 strikeouts while walking only one Lady Hornet batter to earn Westwood’s first win of the year. The Lady Rockets will be back in action on Thursday at 4:30 PM as they welcome Cascade to Lady Rocket Field.

CCMS Baseball Bounces Back With Big Road Win Over Harris

Coming off a heart-breaking 10 inning loss to Harris on Monday night, the Coffee County Middle School baseball team scored runs in 6 of the 7 innings of Tuesday night’s game as they dumped the Eagles 14 to 3. Coffee County got on the board first when Jalen Morris ripped a triple to right-center field and scored on a Hayden Skipper groundout. The Eagles cut the deficit to 5 to 3 in the 3rd inning, but a 4 run 6th inning out the game out of reach. Garret Davis recorded the win for the Raiders on the mound as he allowed three runs over 5 innings. Davis struck out six and walked walked four. Morris and Skipper each finished with 3 hits for Coffee County and Brandon Jernigan added a solo home run for the Raiders. The Coffee County varsity is back in action on Saturday at home when they play host to Whitworth-Buchanan at 11 AM at CCMS. The JV baseball team was also victorious on Tuesday night as they prepare for 2 doubleheaders this week. On Thursday, the JV team travels to Woodbury to take on Cannon County in a 5 PM doubleheader which is a make-up from March 4th. On Friday, the JV team returns home to take on Christiana. That doubleheader also gets underway at 5 PM.

Westwood Soccer Tops Webb on Tuesday

The Westwood Rocket soccer team continued to show its dominance on Tuesday night with a 7 to 0 win over Webb in Bell Buckle. As is the case, the Rockets scored early as Samuel Workman found the back of the net in the 3rd minute. Andres Cavalie added a goal at the 14 minute mark before Felix Salinas added a pair of goals to make the score 4 to 0 at the half. Leo Basurto added a pair of 2nd half goals and Renaldo Ramirez capped the scoring in the 56th minute with a tally. Cavalie, Salinas and Eliot Sain all had assists for Westwood who improved to 7 and 0 for the season. The Rockets are back in action next Tuesday when they take on North Franklin in a friendly in Winchester. The opening kick is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

CCMS Soccer Blanks White County

CHS Soccer LogoThe Coffee County Middle School soccer team earned their first win of the year on Tuesday night with a 4 to 0 defeat of White County in Sparta. The game, which was a make-up from March 3rd, saw the Raiders take a 1 to 0 halftime lead thanks to a White County Own goal in the 15th minute. In the second half, Tucker Anderson, Hayden Hargrove and Isaiah Escamilla all netted goals for Coffee County as Anderson also added an assist. To complete the sweep, the JV team dropped White County 2 to 1. With the win, the Raiders evened their record at 1 and 1 on the young season. Coffee County travels to Shelbyville to take on Harris on Thursday night. The varsity game is set to kick off at 5:30 PM

A nine run explosion in the 4th inning vaulted the Coffee County Middle School softball team to a 15 to 2 over Harris on Tuesday night in Shelbyville. Leading 6 to 1 to enter the frame, the Lady Raiders used 2 extra base hits and 2 Harris errors to ground the Eagles for the second night in a row due to the mercy rule. Six different Lady Raiders had 2 hits on the night including Amanda Mukai who had a triple, and Jayden Scheller and Grace Pippenger who each stroked doubles. The win improves Coffee County to 4 and 1 on the season as they prepare to travel to Cowan on Thursday for a doubleheader with South Franklin. The first game is a make-up of the March 3rd game which was rained out in Manchester.

CHS Baseball Loses in Season Opener on Tuesday

CHS BaseballA hot hitting Shelbyville Eagles baseball team ruined the season opener for the CHS baseball team on Tuesday night as they pounded out 12 hits in a 10 to 2 defeat of the Red Raiders. The Raiders banged out 7 hits of their own on the night but helped out the visitors with 8 errors in the game. Kohl Young got the start for Coffee County going 3 innings to take the loss. Offensively, Davis Green led Coffee County in hitting as he was 2 for 3 on the night with a double and a run scored to be named the Thunder Radio Player of the Game. Gavin Husted was 1 for 3 with a double for Coffee County. The Raiders will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Shelbyville for the second game in the season series. That game will get underway at 5 PM.

CHS Soccer Loses a Thriller on Opening Night

A Victor Ramirez shot in the 90th minute sailed just high and allowed LaVergne to capture a 1 to 0 win over the Coffee County CHS soccer team on Tuesday night at the Raider Soccer Field. LaVergne got a goal in the 20th minute as both teams battled for possession and momentum throughout the first half. In the second half, the Wolverines turned up the pressure and physical play and held the Raiders to a handful of scoring opportunities in the 2nd half. Junior John Parigger got the start in goal for the Raiders and was outstanding as he had 7 saves in the 2nd half. Coach Robert Harper said of his keeper following the game: “You could not ask for a better performance from a keeper that started his first varsity game.” The Raider coaches had praise for their young team for defensive play on the night but will look to get more production in the midfield and forward positions in the coming days. The Raiders begin a grueling stretch of games on Thursday in Unionville as they take on Community at 7 PM in Unionville. They follow that up with 3 games on Friday and Saturday in the Cleveland Classic. The next home match for Coffee County will be on Tuesday, March 22nd when Blackman visits the home pitch. Kickoff will be at 7 PM.

Westwood Baseball Falls to Cascade on Tuesday

Westwood HelmetA disastrous 2nd inning saw the Westwood Rockets give up 7 unearned runs as they fell by a final score of 14 to 8 to Cascade on Tuesday night at Fred Deadman Park. Westwood tried to mount a comeback with 4 runs in the 3rd inning and 2 more in the 4th, but could not stop the strong hitting Champions team. The Rockets were led offensively by Jacob Garms and Wyatt Nugent who each had a pair of hits and Nick Smith who walked twice and scored a pair of runs. The Rockets travel to Cascade on Wednesday for the 2nd game of the season series against their conference foe. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM in Wartrace
