After a 17 day layoff, the Coffee County Middle School softball traveled to Winchester on Monday for a doubleheader with South.  Facing the Lady Trojans in a pair of conference games, Coffee Middle came away with the easy sweep.  The Lady Raiders won by scores of 20 to 0 and 15 to 0.

In the first game, Emily Schuster pitched a 3 inning no-hitter with 7 strikeouts.  Coffee Middle scored 9 runs in the 1st inning and 11 more in the 2nd to power to the win.  The Lady Raiders banged out 15 hits.

After taking off a week for spring break, the Westwood softball team traveled to Unionville on Monday for a conference game with Community.  It was a back and forth battle from start to finish but the Lady Rockets prevailed in the end.  Westwood took the lead in the top of the 7th inning to take the 11 to 9 victory.

A shaky start saw the Lady Rockets give up single runs in the first two innings before Westwood took a 5 to 2 lead in the top of the 3rd.  After Community added another run in the 3rd, the Viqueens retook the lead with a 3 run 4th inning.  Trailing 9 to 6 entering the 7th inning, the Lady Rockets batted around in the 7th to score 5 runs and capture the crucial road win.

Paisley Campbell had a single, a double and a triple in 4 plate appearances to lead Westwood.  Paisley also scored 3 times.  Haidyn Campbell added a double and a single, Brooklyn Blake had a triple and a single and Kara Beth Patton had 2 singles and 3 RBI.

Westwood returns home on Tuesday as they play host to Riverside Christian.  First pitch will be at 5 PM at Lady Rocket Field.

The Coffee County CHS tennis teams hosted their old rival Tullahoma on Monday afternoon at the Raider Academy.  Despite an 11 day layoff, the Raider netters fought to a split with the visiting Cats.  The Lady Raiders fell 7 to 0 while the Red Raiders won 6 to 1.

In girls play, Coffee County was swept in the 5 singles matches.  Jessica Barrera and Wren Lawson each dropped an 8 to 4 decision in the closest losses.  Lawson teamed with Natalie Elzeer to fall 8 to 4 in doubles play.  Barrera teamed with Odalis Garcia in a 8 to 6 loss.

In boys’ singles play, Jonah Rollman captured an 8 to 0 win while Luke Irwin captured a forfeit win.  Also getting singles wins were Grey Riddle(8 to 4) and Reid Lawrence(8 to 3).  Irwin teamed up with Jayden Talley to get an 8 to 0 doubles win while the team of Riddle and Lawrence won 8 to 5.

The CHS netters hit the road on Tuesday to take on Shelbyville in a district match.  First serve is set for 4 PM at Griffith Park in Shelbyville.

Middle School Golf Teams Split on Opening Day

The Coffee County Middle School and Westwood Middle School golf teams opened up the 2018 season on Monday with a home match at Willowbrook.  The Raiders teed off against Tullahoma while the Rockets battled the Tigers of Fayetteville.   For the 2nd year in a row, the middle schoolers used the “flag scoring” system with a 2 person scramble format.

In Westwood’s match with Fayetteville, the Rockets fell 7 ½ to 4 ½. The team of Katie Lawrence and Araya Hughes won their match 2 ½ to ½.  Westwood also captured single flags from the team of Elizabeth Brown and Chloe Martin and the team of Macie Lawrence and Brylee Chansky.

In Coffee Middle’s match with Tullahoma, the Raiders captured a 7 to 5 win.  The teams of Logan Hale/Cole Fowler and Xavier Bartley/Kaleb Jarrell won their matches 2 to 1.  The team of Kira Jarrell and Lillian McGee got a 3 to 0 forfeit win.

The middle school golfers will hit the road on Tuesday when they travel to Shelbyville’s Riverbend Country Club.  Coffee County will square off against Liberty while Westwood will do battle with Harris.  The golfers will go off with a shotgun start at 3:30 PM.

Westwood Baseball Edged by Fayetteville

Brady Nugent of Westwood baseball

Trying to break their first 2 game losing streak of the year, the Westwood baseball hosted Fayetteville on Monday at Looney Riddle Field.  Hosting their final home game of the year and celebrating 8th Grade Night, the Rockets fell in a heartbreaking 4 to 3 contest.

Tied at 3 going to the 6th inning, the visiting Tigers pushed across the go-ahead run.  Westwood had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th but Trenton Thompson was thrown out at the plate for the final out.  Brady Nugent led the Rockets in hitting with 3 hits and 2 runs scored. Connor Smith added a pair of hits and Timothy Henderson added a walk and scored the other Westwood run.

Westwood will travel to Chapel Hill on Thursday for a conference match-up with Forrest.  First pitch is set for 6:30 PM.

The Coffee County CHS softball team hosted non-district rival Cascade on Monday night at Terry Floyd Field.  Coming off a loss to the Lady Champions last year, Coffee County had extra incentive to stop their 2 game losing streak.  Unfortunately, an early lead by Cascade pushed the Lady Raiders to their 3rd straight loss 8 to 5.

Cascade jumped out to a 6 to 0 lead after the first 3 innings as they banged out 7 of their 10 hits for the game.  Coffee County rallied with 2 runs in the 3rd but were held scoreless again until a pushing across a run in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th.

Katie Rutledge and Shelby Scrivnor each had a single and a triple for the Lady Raiders.  Lauren Tomberlin had a single, a double and 2 RBI.

The Lady Raiders travel to Winchester on Tuesday night for a district matchup with Franklin County.  First pitch will be at 7 PM.

Westwood Tennis Falls to Tullahoma

The Westwood tennis teams traveled to Tullahoma on Monday for a match with Tullahoma.  The Lady Rockets battled the Cats to the final match before falling 4 to 3.  The Rockets dropped a 6 to 1 decision.

In the girls’ match, the Lady Rockets captured a pair of singles wins as Lauren Perry(6 to 0) and Rylea McNamara(6 to 4) came out on top.  That duo combined to capture a 6 to 1 win in doubles.

In the boys’ match, Westwood got their lone win in singles play.  Isaac Simmons won by a set score of 6 to 3.

Westwood returns to the court on Tuesday when they play host to St. Andrews-Sewanee.  First serve will be at 4 PM at Fred Deadman Park.

Preds Bounce Back to Beat Avalanche, Take 3-1 Series Lead

The Nashville Predators said they would be better in Game 4. Promise fulfilled.

A dominant start, followed by a final stand led the Preds to defeat the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2, to take a 3-1 series lead with a chance to finish things off in Game 5 back in Nashville.

After allowing three goals in the first period of Game 3, the Predators knew they needed an improved effort from the first moments of Game 4. An early 8-0 advantage in shots eventually brought about another jaw-dropping tally from Filip Forsberg, and although the Avalanche pushed back in the third period, the Preds have sent Colorado to the brink.

“It was a gutsy win, really good playoff hockey,” Preds forward Craig Smith said. “It was an exciting game, that’s for sure. We held on and got the win, and we get to go home now; just take care of ourselves and stay a little more disciplined.”

Forsberg put an exclamation point on a dominant 20 minutes from the visitors when he danced around a Colorado defender and deked his way past Jonathan Bernier to give the Preds their first 1-0 lead of the series.

Goals from Colton Sissons and Smith in the second stanza led to a 3-0 Nashville advantage after 40 minutes of play, and although Gabriel Landeskog and Alexander Kerfoot tallied for Colorado in the third period, Pekka Rinne and his mates kept Colorado at bay just enough to capture the victory.

“They’re a good team, they’re dangerous offensively and we knew they were going to have a punch,” Predators Captain Roman Josi said. “We’re happy about the win, and we found a way to get it.”

Nashville will now head home for an elimination game, a chance to advance to Round Two of the postseason for the third consecutive spring.

“It’s going to be another battle Friday night,” Josi said. “Every game is just tough. We have to make sure we go home, get some rest and bring our best.”

“It’s big to get one on the road,” Smith said. “We just checked in, made it count and that’s that.”

Bounce Back:

A day after being pulled from Game 3, Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne stated his confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back and steal one on the road before heading back to Nashville.

Not only was Rinne spot on in his prediction, he led the way.

The netminder made 31 saves on the night, and with the exception of a few offensive pushes in the third period, the Predators were stellar when they had to be.

“We did a really good job at the end there,” Rinne said. “We killed the clock pretty good at the end and did a really good job, but it was a battle tonight.”

Started by Forsberg’s third goal of the series, the Preds built a three-goal lead, exactly the start they were hoping for after trailing by four in Game 3. A bounce-back perfroemance was a major talking point in the Nashville locker room the day after, with the Preds set on finding a way to come out of Colorado with at least one win.

“We’re a pretty honest group about ourselves,” Josi said. “Even if we win games, there’s still things you’re trying to correct… It’s so important [to have a good start], and today it won us the game.”

Thanks to that solid start – and a heart-racing finish – the Preds have set themselves up to clinch their fourth series on home ice in the past two years. Those games are always the toughest to win, however, but there’s no denying what a bounce-back win like this can do for the club.

So, when Friday night rolls around, one could predict the Preds will find another level. That’s the plan, just as it was in Game 4.

“It’s huge to have a chance to do that and finish the series at home,” Rinne said. “That’s something that it’s in the back of your head and we want to take advantage of that.”

Notes:

After missing 16 games with an upper-body injury, forward Calle Jarnkrok returned to the Predators lineup in Game 4. Miikka Salomaki was scratched in Jarnkrok’s place.

Winger Colton Sissons has 11 points in his last 12 playoff games since Game 5 of the Western Conference final, including a goal tonight.

Austin Watson extended his point streak to five games, but saw his career-high, four-game goal streak come to an end.

The Preds and Avs will now head back to Nashville for Game 5, which comes Friday night at Bridgestone Arena, an 8:30 p.m. CT puck drop.
