Coffee County Soccer Routs Warren County

Stepping out of district play on Tuesday, the Coffee County CHS girls’ soccer team traveled to McMinnville to take on Warren County.  Needing a win after a loss and 4 draws, the Lady Raiders jumped on Warren County for 4 goals in the 1st half as they rolled to a 5 to 0 win over the Lady Pioneers.

Coffee County jumped on the board in the 8th minute when Jenna Garretson scored an unassisted goal.  Anna Amado made it 2 nil in the 20th minute with her own unassisted goal.  Reyna Flores added a goal off an assist from Morgan Henley 1 minute later before Allie Amado powered home a free kick in the 26th minute.

In the second half, Flores and Henley teamed up to make it 5 to 0 as Henley scored on a feed from Flores.  Allie Amado led in shots as she had 5, including 3 on frame.  Garretson had 2 shots on frame.  Freshman keeper Luci Riddle finished with a pair of saves.

The Lady Raiders return to district play on Thursday night when they travel to Winchester to take on Franklin County.  Opening kick is set for 7 PM.

Coffee County Golf Takes 2nd Place at McMinnville Tournament

The Coffee County Red Raider boy’s golf team traveled to McMinnville on Tuesday to compete in the 40th Keith Maxwell high school tournament.

Nine other teams competed for the title. The Cookeville Cavaliers finished first with a score of 320 and the Raiders came in with a score of 328, good enough for the 2nd place trophy.

Coffee County was led by Samuel Prater and Austin Farris with scores of 79 each. Matthew Hale was next with an 83 and Josh Perry shot 87. The Raiders are now 59-5 on the season.

Next up for Coffee County golf will be a make-up 9-hole match with Tullahoma at Willowbrook beginning at 4 PM. It’s also Senior Day starting at 3:45 PM. The Raiders play in Lawrenceburg on Thursday before the district tournament that is set for Monday, also in Lawrenceburg.

 

Westwood Volleyball Edges Coffee County Middle on Tuesday

Squaring off for the 2nd time this season, the Coffee County Middle School volleyball team matched up with Westwood on Tuesday afternoon.  Playing before a big crowd at the Joel Vinson Gym, Westwood was hosting their 3rd straight home match.  The match turned out to be an exciting one that went to 3 sets.  Westwood captured the win by set scores of 25-23, 17-25 and 15-9.

Westwood was led at the net by Anna Johnson who finished with 4 kills.  Emma Kidder had 8 service aces while Abby Clark led the team in digs with 4.  Maddie Sullivan chipped in 3 assists.

For Coffee Middle, Chloe Gannon led the Lady Raiders in kills with 5.  Channon Gannon and Madison Pruitt each had a pair of aces.

Westwood won the JV game in straight sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-19.

Coffee Middle will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Cowan to take on South Franklin.  That match will get underway at 5 PM.  Westwood is off until next Tuesday when they travel to take on Warren County.  First serve is set for 4:30 PM.

Temple Baptist Christian Volleyball Claims 4 Set Win over Victory Baptist Academy

The Lady Eagles of Temple Baptist Christian School made the short trip to Shelbyville on Tuesday night.  Temple took on Victory Baptist Academy in a JV/varsity volleyball doubleheader.  The JV team lost in 3 sets.  The varsity Lady Eagles won their match in 4 sets.

Despite grabbing the win, the varsity Lady Eagles had to fight tooth and nail to capture their 6th win on the year.   Temple won by set scores of 25-27, 25-11, 25-23 and 25-17.  The JV team fell by set scores of 11-25, 26-24 and 5-15.

Temple is now off until Thursday, September 13th when they open play in their home tournament.  The Lady Eagles will welcome 7 other teams to the E.C. Bailey Gym for the 2 day tournament.

Coffee County CHS Volleyball Falls to Riverside Christian

The Coffee County Lady Raider volleyball team hit the road on Tuesday traveling to Fayetteville.  Squaring off against Riverside Christian in a non-district match, Coffee County fell in 4 sets.  The Lady Raiders lost by set scores of 21 – 25, 25-21, 22-25 and 13-25.

Coffee County committed 27 unforced errors including 9 service errors.  Sarah West had an amazing 25 digs on the match and Gracie Pippenger added 10 but Riverside was able to win the long rallies.  Keri Munn had 8 kills and 4 service aces to lead the Lady Raiders in both categories.  Munn, Abigail Parker and Keelie Hillis all had 3 blocks.  Amanda Mukai finished with 10 assists.

The Lady Raiders are back at home on Wednesday night as they play host to Eagleville.  The varsity match gets underway at 6 PM.

Coffee County Middle School Football Falls to South

The Coffee County Middle School football team traveled to Winchester on Tuesday night for a conference tilt with South Franklin.  Coming off a 28 to 0 win last week over Harris, the Raiders tangled with the Trojans on South’s homecoming night.  South led from the very first play on their way to a 32 to 0 win over the Red Raiders.

After receiving the opening kick, South scored on the first play from scrimmage on a run by the quarterback.  It was a back and forth battle throughout most of the 1st half before South added a 7 yard touchdown run on 4th down to take a 16 to 0 lead at intermission.  In the second half, South added a pair of touchdowns in the 3rd quarter for the win.

The Red Raiders will return to Carden-Jarrell Field next Tuesday when they host North Franklin.  Opening kick is set for 6:30 PM.

Westwood Middle Soccer Falls to Community on Tuesday

The Westwood soccer team welcomed Community to Dyer-Bouldin Field.  The young and inexperienced Lady Rockets could not get their offense on track as they fell by a final score of 6 nil.  The Viqueens scored 3 goals in each half as they held a 3 to 0 lead at intermission.  Westwood keeper Holland Willoughby did have 25 saves on the night.

The Lady Rockets will travel to Winchester on Wednesday night as they will do battle with North Franklin.  That match gets underway at 5:30 PM.

Tryout Information for Red Raider Swim Team

Interested in 2018-2019 Red Raider Swimming? Here’s what you need to know…

1. Tryouts will be held Friday, September 14th for NEW SWIMMERS only. Tryouts begin at 4pm at The Manchester Recreation Center indoor pool. The main criteria for making the team are as follows: demonstrate basic skill in the freestyle stroke and demonstrate the ability to complete 100 yards of freestyle non-stop swimming. Also, you need to demonstrate backstroke. Girls need a one piece swim suit and boys need jammers or swim trunks. All swimmers need to have a pair of swim goggles as well. All swimmers must have a signed and completed Physical Form and Parental Consent form in order to try out. Printable forms are located here:

***ATTENTION Last year’s swimmers*** We want all swimmers on last year’s team to report on September 14th to sign up only and turn in your forms…You will not be trying out.

In addition, if you are currently swimming for the Makos then you have my permission to report on Oct 15th as your first day of practice. YOU WILL NOT be allowed to practice unless you bring a completed and signed physical form including the Parental Consent form. Printable forms are located here:

2. Mandatory Parent & Swimmer Meeting will be held at 6:45 in the CCCHS Cafeteria on September 19th. Swimmers will try on sample competition suits while parents and coaches meet to discuss the upcomming season. We need to have at least one parent or legal gaurdian present at this meeting. If you are concerned about your child making the team, feel free to call Coach Becky Behrendorff. The main criteria for making the team are as follows: demonstrate basic skill in the freestyle stroke and demonstrate the ability to complete 100 yards of freestyle non-stop swimming and backstroke.

3. Physicals are required BEFORE you can try out.

4. Swim season runs from October 15 through January 12th unless the swimmer qualifies for the Regional meet or State meet. Those swimmers who qualifiy for regionals will continue to practice and have meets through the last week in January. Swimmers who qualify for the State meet will continue until the second week in February.

5. We will have 4 preseason practices September 25 & 27October 2 at 330-430 at the Rec Center. This is for all non-Mako swimmers. During October 8-12, all swimmers need to practice 2 times on their own during lap swim times.

6. The first regular season practice for all swimmers is Monday October 15th. Swim practice is held on Monday through Thrusday from 3:30 to 4:30 at the Manchester Rec Center. Swimmers should be picked up from practice by 4:45. If they have a rec center membership then they may remain at the facility with signed parent permission given to Coach Becky Behrendorff at the beginning of the season.

7. There will be a fee for all swimmers to swim for the Raiders. This fee will cover travel costs, swim apparel, and pool fees.

Sounds Rally to Win 2018 Season Finale

Cooper Goldby’s two-run double and BJ Boyd’s two-run triple keyed a late rally to help the Nashville Sounds to a 6-5 win Monday afternoon at First Tennessee Park. 7,782 fans watched the 2018 season finale and pushed the season attendance to over 600,000 for only the second time in the franchise’s 41-year history.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Nick Martini started the rally with a one-out walk off Memphis reliever Andrew Morales. After Jorge Mateo struck out for the first out in the inning, Sean Murphy was hit by a pitch and Anthony Garcia singled to load the bases.

Cooper Goldby came to the plate and ripped a two-run double down the right-field line to pull the Sounds within a run at 5-4. It was the first Triple-A hit in Goldby’s career.

BJ Boyd followed with a line drive down the right-field line, scoring both runners to give the Sounds a 6-5 lead. The triple was Boyd’s third hit of the game. He finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Nashville reliever Calvin Coker entered the ninth with a 6-5 lead and got the job done for his first save at the Triple-A level. The youngster issued a one-out walk and hit Andrew Knizner with two outs but got Lane Thomas to bounce out to second base to end the threat.

Nashville trailed 4-0 early after Ramon Urias cracked a solo homer and Thomas hit a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. Melvin Mercedes trimmed a 5-0 deficit to 5-2 with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.

Sounds’ Right-hander Richard Morban kept it close in the later innings. The 20-year-old allowed one run in four innings of relief work and picked up his first win at the Triple-A level.

Post-Game Notes

  • With today’s 6-5 win, the Sounds finished the 2018 season at 72-68.
  • Today’s attendance of 7,782 pushed the season total to 603,135. It’s the highest single-season attendance in First Tennessee Park history.
  • The Sounds finished with a home record of 41-29, the team’s best home record in a single season at First Tennessee Park.
  • BJ Boyd finished 3-for-4, his sixth three-hit game of the season and his 27th multi-hit game overall.

Coffee County Football Falls to Blackman

Opening their 2018 region schedule at home on Friday night, the Coffee County CHS football team welcomed the #4 team in the state Blackman to Carden-Jarrell Field.  The visiting Blaze put the clamps on the Raider offense holding them below 100 yards of total offense as they won 42 to 0.

Matthew Pittman, who missed the first 2 games of the year with an ankle injury, led the Raiders in yardage with 48 yards rushing on 8 carries.  Pittman also completed 1 pass for 7 yards as he was named the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game.  Andrew Mahaffey added 19 yards on 16 carries.  C.J. Anthony caught 2 passes for 8 yards as Coffee County finished with 86 yards of total offense.
