Motlow Soccer Prepares for Mississippi Trip After 3-3 Tie with Itawamba

The Motlow Lady Bucks scored three goals within a 14-minute span in the second half, including two by Kristen Heath, and held off powerful Itawamba (MS) Community College in extra time to earn a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon at Franklin County High School in Winchester.

The Lady Bucks (3-2-2) will travel to Meridian, Mississippi, this weekend for a pair of contests, facing the host team Friday at 3 p.m. before quickly turning around and playing Hinds Community College on the same field Saturday at noon. Motlow’s next home game is Oct. 5, when they host TCCAA rival Dyersburg State at 4:30 p.m. at Smyrna High School.

Despite playing two extra 10-minute periods, Motlow and Itawamba could not break the 3-3 deadlock. Both teams had opportunities to score but could not put the ball in the net. Itawamba entered the game with a 5-1 overall record, including wins over TCCAA teams Dyersburg State and Southwest Tennessee.

The visitors got on the scoreboard first with three minutes remaining in the first half when Grace Joyce scored on an assist from Halle Moore, giving Itawamba a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.

Motlow was the aggressor coming out of the intermission. April Gillespie, a freshman from Madison, Ala., tied the score with a goal at the 50-minute mark with an assist from Keely Smith. Heath then put in two goals within nine minutes of each other, the first at the 55-minute mark on an assist from Gillespie, and the second at 64 minutes with an assist from Rebekah Duross.

Despite being down 3-1, Itawamba fought back with Sarah Whitt scoring at the 77-minute mark and Cynthia Betancourt tying the game with a goal at 82 minutes.

Heath had four shots for the Lady Bucks, while Paige Loveless and Kayla Moultry each notched three. The Lady Bucks had 20 shots as a team, one more than Itawamba, with each team logging two corner kicks. Manchester freshman Ashley Woods went the distance at keeper, saving seven shots on goal.

Coffee County Football Gets Region Win at Warren County

With the Warren County Fair taking place in McMinnville, senior Andrew Mahaffey put his Coffee County football team on his back for a ride on Friday night.  The senior rushed 35 times for 303 yards as the Raiders returned to region play with a convincing win over the Pioneers.  Taking on their bitter rival, Coffee County ground out a 35 to 13 win.

The Red Raiders got a pair of touchdown runs from Mahaffey in the 1st quarter to build a 21 to 7 lead after the first 12 minutes.  A pair of long touchdown runs by Warren County sent the 2 teams to the locker room at halftime with Coffee County up 21 to 13.  In the second half, quarterback Matthew Pittman hit Trace Bryant for a 25 yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter and Marshall Haney rushed for a 10 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to close out the scoring.

With his 303 yard performance, Mahaffey was named the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game.  Pittman rushed 10 times for 64 yards with a rushing and a passing touchdown.  Haney finished with 13 yards on 3 carries as Coffee County improves to 1 and 1 in region play.

The Red Raiders return home next Friday night to Carden-Jarrell.  Coffee County will play host to Cookeville.  That game will kick off at 7 PM and Thunder Radio will once again be your source for exclusive coverage.  Lucky Knott and Dustin Murray will bring you the kickoff at 7 PM, Thunder Radio’s live coverage begins with the pregame show at 6 PM.

Lady Raider Volleyball Goes 2 and 3 in Saturday Tournament

The Coffee County Lady Raider volleyball team hosted the Southern Slam Tournament on Saturday.  Playing matches at the Coffee County Middle School, the Raider Academy and Central High School, The Lady Raiders welcomed 16 teams to town.  Finishing the day with a record of 2 and 3, the Lady Raiders qualified for the for the Golf Bracket finals before being eliminated.

The Lady Raiders opened play on Saturday morning with a straight set win over Tullahoma.  Coffee County defeated Tullahoma by set scores of 25-8 and 25-20.  In the second match, the Lady Raiders beat Grundy County 25-19 and 25-17.  In their final pool match of the day, Coffee County fell to Columbia Academy.  The Lady Raiders lost by set scores of 24-26 and 19-25.  In the championship round, Coffee County was swept by Lawrence County and Community.

For the day, Coffee County was led in kills by Kiya Ferrell who finished with 27 while Keri Munn finished with 20.  Amanda Mukai led the Lady Raiders in aces with 11 and assists with 32.  Munn had the team lead in blocks with 5 and Sarah West was the team leader in digs with 24.

Coffee County travels to Lincoln County on Tuesday for a pivotal district battle.  Opening serve is set for 6:30 PM.

Local Runners Excel at Cross Country Meet at Old Stone Fort

Hosting their first meet of the year, the Coffee County CHS cross country team welcomed 16 high school and middle school teams to the Old Stone Fort State Park on Tuesday.  Included in the field were the middle school teams from Coffee County Middle School and Westwood Middle School.

In the middle school girls’ race, Coffee County Middle School’s Greenlee Woods charged to the lead in the final 100 yards to win in a time of 14:03.4 for the 2 mile race.  Rylea McNamara of Westwood finished in 4th place at 15:22.8.  Westwood finished in 4th place in the team standings.  Coffee Middle did not field enough runners to place in the team standings.

In the middle school boys’ race, Lucas Beaty finished 2nd and Bradley Escue finished in 3rd place for the top local runners.  Beaty ran a time of 13:25 and Escue finished in 13.26.9.  Aiden Smith was the top finisher for Westwood.  Smith had a time of 13:54.7.  Coffee Middle finished in 2nd place in the team standings.  Westwood did not field enough runners to place in the team standings.

In the high school races, Coffee County won both the boys’ and girls’ 5K races.  Patricia Barrera won the girls’ race at 22:22.2.  Teammate Madison Rooker was 2nd at 22:44.9 as the Lady Raiders finished in 2nd place in the team standings 3 points behind Grundy County.  For the boys’, Jacob Rutledge won the race with a time of 18:17.8.  Renato Ayala finished 3rd in a time of 19:32.4.  The Red Raiders won the team title as they beat out Lincoln County by 55 points for the title.

The Westwood runners will be back in action on Tuesday, September 18th when they travel to Fayetteville for a match at Don Davidson Park.  The Coffee County Middle School runners will be back in action on Saturday, September 22nd when they compete in the TSSAA Sectional Meet in Murfreesboro.  That meet gets underway at 9 AM at Riverdale.  The CHS runners are back in action on Friday, September 28th when they travel to Sewanee for a meet at St. Andrew’s.

Temple Baptist Volleyball Claims Tournament Title

The Lady Eagle varsity volleyball team of Temple Baptist Christian captured the title of the Lady Eagle Invitational on Friday.  Temple finished the tournament with a 6 and 0 record.  Temple captured the tournament title with a pair of match wins over South Haven of Springfield.

In pool play, the Lady Eagles opened with a 2 set win over Victory Baptist of Shelbyville.  Temple won by set scores of 25-16 and 21-8.  In the pool play final, the Lady Eagles topped Madison Baptist out of Alabama in straight sets.  Temple won by set scores of 25-13 and 25-12.

In the championship bracket, the Lady Eagles opened up with a straight set win over Dogwood Christian of Georgia.  Temple captured the straight set win by set scores of 25-14 and 25-11.  In the quarterfinals, Temple swept Anchored out of Bowling Green, Kentucky by set scores of 25-9, 25-9.  In the winner’s bracket finals, Temple beat South Haven in 2 sets.  The Lady Eagles won by set scores of 25-15, and 25-13.  In the finals, Temple needed 3 sets to capture the title.  The Lady Eagles won by set scores of 25-21, 12-25 and 15-4.

The junior varsity team ended up with a 4th place finish.  Ruby Lawson was named to the JV all-tournament team.  For the varsity team, Grace Butler and Lexie Stewart were named to the all-tournament team.  Rachel Butler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Temple returns to the court on Saturday when the travel to Murfreesboro for a varsity/JV doubleheader.  The Lady Eagles will take on Franklin Road Christian in the road match.  First serve is set for 11 AM.

MYFL Raiders Tangled with Fayetteville on Saturday

The Manchester Youth Football League welcomed Fayetteville to Carden-Jarrell Field on Saturday.  The Raiders dropped a pair of games in the tripleheader against the Tigers.  The Division 1 Raiders fell 28 to 6 to Fayetteville.  The Division 2 Raiders won 33 to 6.  The Division 3 Raiders fell by a final score of 27 to 0.

The Raiders are on the road next Saturday as they travel to Winchester to take on Franklin County.  Games will begin at 10 AM with the Division 1 game.  The Division 2 game will kick off at 11:30 AM and the Division 3 game will get underway at 1 PM.

Coffee County Volleyball Battles to 4 Set Win over Grundy County

The Coffee County CHS volleyball team welcomed Grundy County to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym.  Trying to break a 2 game losing streak and get a season sweep over the Lady Jackets, the Lady Raiders fought and clawed to a 4 set win over the visitors.  Coffee County won by set scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-21.

After winning the 3rd set to go up 2 to 1, Coffee County fell behind 18 to 12 in the 4th set.  Abigail Layne served up a Coffee County rally to take a 20 to 18 lead and gain control of the match.  Layne finished with the team lead in aces with 6.  Keri Munn and Amanda Mukai each had 3 aces.  Munn finished tied for the team lead in blocks with Keelie Hillis with 2.  Mukai led the team in assists with 22 while Hillis added 6.  Lexi Bryan led the team in kills with 12 while Kiya Ferrell and Hillis each added 10 kills.

2018 Southern Slam Volleyball Tournament

The Lady Raiders are back in action on Saturday when they host their annual Southern Slam Tournament. In Pool play, Coffee County will take on Tullahoma at 8:30 AM, Grundy County at 11:30 AM and Columbia Academy at 1:30 PM.  All 3 of those games will be help at CHS.  Single elimination tournament bracket play begins at 3 PM.  Tournament games will be played at Coffee County Central High, the Coffee County Raider Academy and the Coffee County Middle School.

Coffee County Soccer Draws with Shelbyville

Coming off a huge win at home on Tuesday night, the Lady Raider soccer team of CHS visited Shelbyville on Thursday night.  Squaring off against the Eaglettes, Coffee County was to avenge an earlier draw with Shelbyville as well as their second district win in a row.  After racing out to a 2 to 0 lead at the half, the Lady Raiders had to settle for a 2 to 2 tie.

Allie Amado scored first for the Lady Raiders in the 4th minute on an unassisted goal.  Jenna Garretson added a goal on a free kick in the 14th minute.  Shelbyville scored in the 47th minute to cut the Lady Raider lead in half.  The Eaglettes got the tying goal with 3 minutes left in the match.

Shelbyville outshot Coffee County 20 to 15 in the match.  Morgan Henley led Coffee County in shots with 3.  Keeper Lucy Riddle finished with 8 saves.

The Lady Raiders return to the pitch on Tuesday night at home as they host Lincoln County.  Kickoff is set for 7 PM.

Westwood Middle Volleyball Dumps Tullahoma Middle

The Westwood Middle School volleyball team welcomed Tullahoma to the Joel Vinson Gym on Thursday.  The Lady Rockets varsity captured a 3 set victory by set scores of 25-18, 23-25 & 15-13.  The JV team also captured a 3 set victory by set scores of 25-7, 18-25 & 15-13.

In the varsity match, Emma Kidder led the way with 4 aces and 8 digs.  Abby Clark led the team in aces with 5.  Anna Johnson had 3 kills and 6 digs while Maddie Sullivan finished with 6 assists.  For the JV Lady Rockets, Lilee Scott finished with 2 digs and 3 aces.  Ivet Ontiverous led the team in aces with 6.  Cassie Douglas had 2 assists.

Westwood will be back at home on Tuesday for their final home match of the year.  Westwood will square off against South Lincoln in that match scheduled for the Joel Vinson Gym.  First serve is set for 5 PM.

Westwood Football Comes Up Short at Cascade

Making the short ride to Wartrace, the Westwood football team visited Cascade on Thursday night.  In a game delayed 45 minutes in the 2nd quarter by lightning, Westwood went to the halftime down 8 to 6.  Cascade held off a late Westwood drive to capture a 30-22 win over the Rockets.

Westwood got a touchdown pass and a touchdown reception from Jayden Carter and Konnor Heaton in the game.  In the first half, Carter caught a touchdown pass from Heaton.   After Cascade scored to make it 16 to 6 in the 3rd quarter, Heaton scored a rushing touchdown and caught a Carter pass for the 2 point conversion to make it 16 to 14.  Trailing 24 to 14, Ian Weldon caught a 40 yard double pass from Carter before Carter ran for the 2 point conversion to cut the deficit to 24 to 22.  After Cascade scored again late in the 4th quarter, Westwood drove to the

Cascade scored with minute left to go in the game to take the 30 to 22 lead.  Westwood’s final drive made it to the Cascade to 35 yard line as time expired.
