1/28/15 — Marvin Brannan

flower 13Mr. Marvin Brannan age 77 of Monteagle passed away Sunday morning, January 25, 2015, in Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

He was born in Franklin County, Tennessee, a son of the late Sol and Clara Belle Crownover Brannan and was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Joyce Brannan on December 21, 2014; and sisters, Bonnie Sue Ayers, Helen K. Dillon and Evelyn Hamby.

Mr. Brannan was a U.S. Army veteran and was a Baptist. He had worked for many years in Kansas City, Kansas in the public works department before moving to Monteagle and opening Mr. B’s Barber Shop. He was a Baptist Minister and had served at Midway Baptist Church and Monteagle Baptist Tabernacle. Mr. Brannan was a very patriotic, he loved his country and his community and was involved in local politics, he had served as alderman and as mayor of Monteagle. His favorite past time was to go to “ the farm” and tend to his goats, mules, chickens and other farm animals that he would acquire.

Survivors include his daughters, Marla (Adam) Rose of Murfreesboro and Kathy (Steve) Cowan of Cowan, TN.; granddaughters, Madilyn and Hannah; sisters, Clara Faye Vestal-Hogan of Basehor, Kansas and Iva Lou Bolin of Decherd; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Brother James Collins and Brother Jerry Crownover officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester with full military honors. The family will receive friends Tuesday 5-9 P.M. at the funeral home. 1/27-15 — Mary Blackburn Phelps

phelpsFuneral services for Mrs. Mary Blackburn Phelps, age 82, of Manchester will be conducted Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Monday, January 26, 2015 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Phelps passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015, in Manchester.

She was born December 7, 1932 in Montgomery, Alabama, the daughter of the late William Edmund Blackburn and Elma Viola Blackburn. She married the love of her life Brady Hollis Phelps July 30, 1948 in Georgia and the two began their life together. In earlier years, Mrs. Phelps, while raising her three young daughters, was actively involved in the Home Demonstration Club and 4-H Club. She was a wonderful homemaker who dearly loved her family. More recently, she enjoyed spending her time reading a good book or going to yard sales and shopping with her daughter, Susie. She looked most forward to her daily phone calls from her sisters, Nell and Jewell Dean as well as her dear friend and niece Joan Morton. She also looked forward to having visitors, especially, Joan and Wayne King Morton. She will be forever missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Phelps is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Brady Hollis Phelps on July 7, 2003 and a brother, William Edmund Blackburn.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-laws, Connie Brown and husband, Norman of Woodbury, TN; Shirley Littlefield and husband, Stan of Altamonte Springs, FL and Susie McEacharn and husband, Lou of Manchester, TN; three grandchildren, Rhonda Merriman, Jennifer Morris and husband, Sam and Gregory Brown; four great-grandchildren, Trenton and Trey Jones, Dalton and Emily Morris; and three great-great grandchildren, Adain and Briley Jones and Levi Jones. Also surviving are her two devoted sisters, Frances Nell McBryar of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA and Jewell Dean Ray of Summitville, TN; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.

1/25/15 — Lois Wylene Sumner McMahan

flower4Lois Wylene Sumner McMahan was born June 28, 1931 in Scott, Georgia and died January 23, 2015 at the NHC Healthcare Center in Tullahoma, TN at the age of 83. She was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church of Christ and enjoyed cooking, canning food, gardening and quilting. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas “Jack” Elbert Sumner and Elfreda Black Sumner; sister, Virginia Bennett; four brothers, Jackie Sumner, Ray Sumner, Covin Sumner and Terry Sumner; first husband, Horace Sherrill and two of his daughters, Dorothy Miller and Helen Smith who she dearly loved as if they were her own children. Horace is also the father of her seven children. Also preceding her in death was her late husband, John McMahan and his son Wesley McMahan. She is survived by two sisters, Geraldine McCafferty of Tampa, FL and Patricia Vaden of Murfreesboro, TN; three brothers, Johnny Sumner of Manchester, TN, Paul Sumner of Nashville, TN and Jerry Sumner of Gettysburg, PA; four sons, Vernon (Jr.) Sherrill (Cindy) of Hillsboro, TN, Doyle Sherrill (Diane) of Manchester, TN, Kenneth Sherrill (Tommye) of Beersheba Springs, TN and Randy Sherrill (Bonnie) of Tullahoma, TN; three daughters, Nina Tucker (Gerald) of Winchester, TN, Faye Coleman (Allen) of Manchester, TN and Carrie Hamilton (Ron) of Manchester, TN. She is also survived by John’s children whom she loved dearly as if they were her own, Christy McMahan Herndon, John Richard McMahan and Tammy McMahan. She loved everyone in or related to the Sherrill and McMahan families. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She will be missed by many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 6 – 9:00 p.m. at Central Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be conducted on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Central Funeral Home with Elder Leonard Herman, Elder Barry Whiteaker and Brother Benny Benjamin officiating. 1/31/15 —– Shelia Ann Wimley Harris

Shelia Ann Wimley Harris, age 48 of Winchester passed away Tuesday,
January 20, 2015 at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. 

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 2 PM at Daves-Culbertson 
Funeral Home.  

Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 12 Noon until service time.

A native of Decherd, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Dorothy
Brewer Wimley. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her family.  She also
enjoyed sewing, knitting and listening to music.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister,
Kimberly Wimley and nephew, Steven Massingille.

Mrs. Harris is survived by one son, Chris Lawrie of Decherd; one daughter,
Sheleah Harris of Tullahoma; one brother Johnny Watson of Marietta, GA and
ex-husband, Thomas Lawrie of Decherd.

BETTY DEAN GARRETT, age 83, of Estill Springs, Tenn., departed this life, Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Harton Regional Medical Center.

Betty was born January 22, 1931 in Limestone County, Alabama and was the youngest child of seven. She was born to the late John Leslie and Mary Elizabeth Magnusson.

Betty was a member of the Estill Springs United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son; Clyde Michael Garrett.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Mary Paulette Scoggins and her husband, Matthew “Sonny” M., Jr. of Columbia, Tenn., grandchildren; Matthew M. Scoggins, III and his wife, Emily of Knoxville, Tenn., Dr. Marion Scoggins of Houston, TX, Chad Michael Garrett and his wife, Melissa of Estill Springs, Tenn., Jenny Baumann and her husband, Alex of Atlanta, GA, and Michelle Partin and her husband, Jason of Decherd, Tenn., five great-grandchildren; Olivia, J.W., Abby, Sam and Lucy.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Grant Funeral Services from 10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Betty will also be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Reverend Joe Rutherford, officiating.

Interment will follow at Hastings Cemetery in Ardmore, AL with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Johnnie Rayford O’Neal, age 69 of Huntland passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at his residence.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2 PM at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Huntland, TN. with Bro. Chris King officiating.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 12 Noon until service time.

A native of Moultrie, GA he was the son of the late Francis Orea and Katherine Tucker O’Neal.

Mr. O’Neal was a Journeyman Tool & Die Maker. He was a member of Donaldson Grove Baptist Church but was attending Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Huntland. He was a Mason and a member of the Winchester Lodge #158.

Mr. O’Neal is survived by his wife, Christie Strickland O’Neal of Huntland; one son, John Kevin O’Neal and his wife, Krissie of Niceville, FL; one daughter, Melissa Christie Williams and her husband, Lance of Huntland; two sisters, Derlye Stover and her husband, Mike of Athens, GA and Judy Feimster of Atlanta; brother-in-law, Stanley Steven Strickland and his wife, Peggy of Moultrie, GA; sister-in-law, Linda Strickland Merritt of Amelia Island, GA and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Ann Anderson, age 71 of Beechgrove, Tennessee passed from this life on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents J.C. and Annie Rose Zella West Crocker, and one son Noel Keith Anderson.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-three years, Nolan Anderson, two daughters, Anita Alford and husband Virgil, Kathy Roberts and husband Kenneth, one son Horace Lee Anderson and Debby all of Beechgrove, Tennessee, three sisters, Lousie Meeks and husband Jack of Pelham, Tennessee, Christine Alford of Woodbury, Tennessee, Betty Jo Wimley and husband Harold of Manchester, Tennessee, six grandchildren, Alisha, Amanda, Joshua, Jordan, Keith, Katrina, and four great grandchildren, Penelope, Oliver, Billie, and Blake.

Mrs. Mary Ann was of the Baptist faith. She was a certified nurse’s aide and took great care others throughout her life. She enjoyed studying and following genealogy and her time with family and friends was precious. Mary Ann was the sales representative for Vaughn’s monument Company for over thirty years. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Linda Marlene Layne O’Neal, age 64, of Pelham, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at her residence.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Huetta Layne; brothers, Harlon, Fred, Lonnie Layne; sisters, Ella Mae Blankenship, Gladys Sanders, Telma Jean Layne, Louise Shield, Juanita Layne.

Survivors include her husband, Kenny O’Neal, Pelham, Tennessee; sons, Kenneth W. O’Neal, Jr., and Derrick Russell O’Neal, of Pelham, Tennessee; daughter, Kendra Brooke Baltimore, Pelham, Tennessee; brother, Kenneth Layne, Pelham, Tennessee; sister, Arlene Layne, Pelham, Tennessee; grandchildren, Dagen Jay Baltimore, Keeley Faith Baltimore, Hunter Wayne O’neal, Trinity Jade O’Neal, Kenzie Shade O’Neal.

1/24/15 —— J.C. Cornelison

veteranJ.C. Cornelison, age 76 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on January 20, 2015 at the Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.

J.C. was a retired Carpenter in the Construction Business and a United States Army Veteran. He was extremely proud of his honored service to our nation serving during the early 1960’s.

Although he lost his battle with sickness, he won the Victory as he stepped out of this world into a sickness free world on January 20, 2015. First and foremost, J.C. loved telling people about his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, especially the nurses at Centennial. J.C. loved being with his family and friends and enjoyed yard sales and doing jigsaw puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the late James Clark Cornelison, Sr. and Nellie Sue Walden Cornelison; sisters, Dean Prince, Minnie Jewel Spry and Jannie Honea; and brothers, Bill Cornelison and Lester Cornelison.

J.C. is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Patricia K. Huddleston Cornelison of Manchester; children, Juston Stephens, Teresa Crutcher (Dairl) of Lewisburg, TN, Donnie Stephens (Debbie) of Manchester, Brian E. Brown (Natalie) of Hillsboro, Patty Duke of Manchester, Jeff Brown (Mia) of Lorton, VA, Mona Gray of Manchester and Larry Brown (Tracie) of Manchester; several grandchildren, one of whom, James (J.P.)
