Man drowns attempting to evade police in Franklin County

Johnny Baldwin, a 24-year old man from Warrenville, Illinois, allegedly drowned in Boiling Fork Creek in Franklin County early Thursday after he attempted to elude police.

A vehicle pursuit began in Decherd after Baldwin was allegedly driving erratically, according to the Herald Chronicle. Baldwin eluded police and crashed into a patrol car before fleeing on foot. He allegedly entered the water and attempted to swim across the fork before turning to come back. He eventually went below the water and did not resurface.

One dead after apparent domestic altercation in Grundy County

According to a report from the Grundy County Herald, one man is dead after being shot in what authorities believe was a domestic violence situation.

Deputies responded to a residence in Altamont at approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday to find Stone Nolan, age 24, with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Sheriff Clint Shrum said that preliminary findings lead the sheriff’s department to believe the shooting was in self defense. He added that the victim had been arrested before for domestic assault.
The body has been sent for an autopsy.

Organizers plan march for Tullahoma Saturday

Organizers are planning a march in Tullahoma Saturday, June 13, as part of the Black Lives Matter movement that has swept the nation since the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers nearly two weeks ago.

The Tullahoma march will go from the CD Stamps building on South Jackson to City Hall and back. The march is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. 

Coffee County Sheriff’s Dept. receives funding for new software

Coffee County Sheriff’s Department has been approved funding for new software for the Coffee County Jail. The funding was approved on Thursday, June 4.

According to Sheriff Chad Partin, the department requested $56,000 from the capital projects fund for the system after a virus attack in April exploited weaknesses in the current system.

There will be an annual cost of $13,000 per year to operate the new software.

McMinnville JCPenney store one of 154 to close

JCPenney announced this week that it will begin the closure of 154 of its store locations beginning next week.
JCPenney said closure could take 10-16 weeks co finalize closures. This is the first phase of the company “shrinking its footprint” after filing for bankruptcy protection last month.

As part of bankruptcy reorganization, JCPenney intends to permanently close one third of its 846 stores over the next two year period.

The Penney’s store located at the Three Star Mall in McMinnville will be one of six Tennessee locations to close in this round of closures. Other Tennessee stores to close will be in Cleveland, Columbia, Dyersburg, Kingsport and Maryville.

Thunder Radio partners with Manchester to help produce July 4 fireworks

The City of Manchester has announced that the annual 4th of July Fireworks will be held on Saturday, July 4th, beginning at 9 p.m.. However this year there will not be the regular party that is normally held at Rotary Park. However, citizens can view the fireworks from any viewing location of their choice around town with music synchronized on their radio at 107.9 FM (Thunder Radio).

“We are excited to be able to host the celebration with Thunder Radio, although it may look and sound different than in years past,” said Mayor Lonnie Norman. “We’ve decided to move forward and find a way for people to safely celebrate their Fourth of July.”

The City of Manchester Recreation Department and Thunder Radio (107.9 FM),  will be producing an 20-minute aerial array of fireworks synchronized to music beginning at 9 P.M. from the Recreation Complex grounds.

“We are looking forward to hosting the modified celebration with Thunder Radio so residents can enjoy the fireworks from their vehicles,” added Norman.

The best way to listen to Thunder Radio for the synchronized music will be at 107.9 FM.

“These types are events and community service projects are what Thunder Radio is all about,” said Josh Peterson, owner of Thunder Radio. “The regular celebration is one of the best events of the year in Manchester; we wanted to do our best to help make this Independence Day as good as possible for our citizens given the current circumstances.”

One injured in Thursday shooting at Northgate Mall in Tullahoma

Tullahoma Police Department investigating a shooting that allegedly took place inside the Tullahoma Northgate Mall Thursday.

A verbal altercation took place inside the mall, then a while male allegedly produced a gun and shot one person, according to Tullahoma Police Chief Jason Williams. The individual who was injured was transported to Tennova Hospital before being flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The shooter fled the scene in a while vehicle that police were still looking for as of 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Active COVID-19 cases in Coffee County at 20

As of 2 p.m. Thursday, there are now 25,120 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Tennessee This includes 401 deaths and 1,855 hospitalizations. There are 16,643 cases classified as recovered, leaving 8,477 active cases in the state. This is about 26 fewer cases than the previous day.

Meanwhile, in Coffee County, there are now 78 confirmed cases of the virus with 58 recoveries. This leaves 20 active cases, which is 2 more than the previous day.

More than 20,000 unemployment claims last week in Tennessee

New unemployment claims are trending down in Tennessee, but still remain unusually high. For the week ending May 30, there were 22,784 new claims filed. This is down from 26,000 the week before that and is the fourth straight week below 30,000 after seven straight weeks of 30,000+ clais, including the first week in April when over 116,000 filed claims.

In total, there have been 581,405 new claims filed since the week of March 15.
Tennessee has paid out $285,711,045 through Federal Cares funding .

Nationally, 1.9 million filed new claims last week, bringing the total of claims to over 40 million .
