Murfreesboro attorney charged, accused of asking for sexual favors as payment
An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the arrest of a Rutherford County attorney, charged with multiple counts of rape.
At the request of 16th District Attorney General Jennings Jones, in February 2019, TBI Special Agents began investigating allegations that a Murfreesboro attorney attempted to get a client to provide sexual activity in lieu of payment. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information indicating that David Whelan forced or coerced female clients into sex as a way to re-pay their attorney fees.
On Monday, the Rutherford County Grand Jury returned indictments charging David Whelan (DOB 10/24/1970) with four counts of Rape by Fraud, four counts of Rape by Coercion, and one count of Promoting Prostitution. Whelan was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

USDA encourages farmers to participate in committee nominations
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) encourages all farmers, ranchers, and FSA program participants to take part in the Coffee/Grundy County Committee election nomination process.
FSA’s county committees are a critical component of the day-to-day operations of FSA and allow grassroots input and local administration of federal farm programs.
Committees are comprised of locally elected agricultural producers responsible for the fair and equitable administration of FSA farm programs in their counties. Committee members are accountable to the Secretary of Agriculture. If elected, members become part of a local decision making and farm program delivery process.
A county committee is composed of three to 11 elected members from local administrative areas (LAA). Each member serves a three-year term. One-third of the seats on these committees are open for election each year.
County committees may have an appointed advisor to further represent the local interests of underserved farmers and ranchers. Underserved producers are beginning, women and other minority farmers and ranchers and landowners and/or operators who have limited resources.
All nomination forms for the 2020 election must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by Aug. 1, 2020 (or next business day). For more information on FSA county committee elections and appointments, refer to the FSA fact sheet: Eligibility to Vote and Hold Office as a COC Member available online at: fsa.usda.gov/elections.

Gas prices continue steady increase in Coffee County
The Tennessee gas price average continues to increase and has risen nearly 8 cents since this time last week. The Tennessee Gas Price average is now $1.87 which is a quarter higher than one month ago and 50 cents less than one year ago. The lowest price of gasoline in Coffee County is $1.79 per gallon of regular unleaded.
“As Americans drive more, they are re-fueling gasoline demand levels, which is helping to lift pump prices, said Megan Cooper, spokesperson, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Higher demand will contribute to increasing gas prices in the coming weeks, but they aren’t going to spike to typical summer prices. That’s because demand won’t be sufficient enough to drive down stocks levels. Gasoline stocks sit at a significant surplus of nearly 24 million bbl year-over-year.”
Quick Facts

– The lowest 10% of pump prices are $1.71 for regular unleaded

Restrooms being installed at Manchester soccer fields
Restrooms will soon be available at the Manchester Sports Park soccer fields.
Crews with Gilley Crane set the building in the park on Monday. Manchester Parks and Recreation Director Bonnie Gamble told Thunder Radio news that crews will continue to work on the building through this week and a concrete pad will be poured around the building near the early part of July.
“After the concrete is poured around the building, it will still need to be inspected by the state,” explained Gamble.
In total, this project will cost $176,000 with $88,000 in funding coming from the state. The city will match $88,000, part of which comes from city labor. Gamble said the bathrooms will definitely be open in time for fall soccer. (see a time-lapse video of installation below)
