Cecil Ray Powers

Cecil Ray Powers was born in Summitville, TN on May 22, 1933 and died on July 17, 2022. He was the only son of the late Ida Rayburn Powers and Cecil Powers. He had one sister, Dorothy Gail Powers Cole who died in December 2007. She and her husband, Robert, had one daughter, Anita and two grandchildren.

Ray grew up working at Powers and Banks, his father’s general store in Summitville TN. During his school years music, and especially singing, was his great joy. Without professional training, he started singing in school plays and at school events. His first major role was starring in the life story of Steven Foster. That play started his years of singing at numerous weddings, funerals, churches, and a weekly Sunday afternoon radio program that featured popular music of the day. His baritone voice also landed him a part time radio announcer job during his high school years.

Ray later graduated first in his class from the Tennessee School of Broadcasting in Nashville and was awarded a job at Huntsville, Alabama’s largest AM-FM radio station. In April of 1953, after more than two years working at the radio station, Ray volunteered for three years of active duty with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following four months of rigorous basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he received his five days of leave, which included travel time, to visit parents and report to Fort Lewis, Washington for overseas duty. Everyone on board the ship assumed they were headed for Korea; however, because the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed on July 27,1953, the ship docked in Yokohama, Japan. He was assigned to the 564th transportation intelligence unit at the Far East Headquarters in Zama, Japan. He received an honorable discharge in February,1956 with the rank of E5 Specialist. In April 1961, he received an honorable discharge from rescue standby.

When Ray returned to TN, he needed a job close to home. Clyde Phillips, a dear family friend, knew that Mr. John Rann, a successful jeweler in Tullahoma, wanted to open a store in Manchester. The year was 1956. Ray was recommended and hired with Carter-Rann Jewelers who opened a store in downtown Manchester. Mr. Rann retired in 1958 and sold the store, on credit, to Ray and his new bride, the former Sara Frances Gold.

Ray first saw his bride-to-be while singing the Lord’s Prayer at the close of a wedding at the First United Methodist Church in Manchester in 1956. It was November 9th,1957 when the tall, Alabama southern belle, with bright red hair and sparkling blue eyes, became his bride. Their marriage lasted almost 65 years and was blessed with two special daughters, Rita Frances and Linda Kaye and one very special grandson, Matthew Brian.

Ray was an avid writer, winning many awards for the three star letters he wrote to the editor at The Tennessean in Nashville. For a number of years, he also wrote a weekly column in The Manchester Times entitled Silver Linings. His other hobby was cooking southern foods. Ray served on the Manchester Planning Commission and the Manchester Housing Authority. He was a former Lions Club member, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was baptized at the age of 12 and was a faithful, lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Powers will receive services with military honors on Friday, July 22, at 12:00 p.m. at Manchester City Cemetery with a graveside service to follow with Reverend Randy Brown officiating and musical selections by Jamie Harden.

In lieu of flowers and food, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Fair dates moved up this year to the first full week of September – a couple of weeks earlier than traditional fair week. Fair will run Sept. 3-10, with midway rides beginning on Sept. 5.

Coffee County Fairgrounds are located at 99 Lakeview Drive in Manchester.

School meals to return to pre-pandemic plans; end of free meals for all students

Manchester and Coffee County Schools will each be returning to session on Monday August 1.

One major change over the past couple of years that parents should be aware of is the absence of free lunches for all this year.

As a result of COVID-19 pandemic, USDA provided waivers that allowed all children to eat at no cost through the USDA seamless summer option program. Since April of 2020, children through the US have been able to eat meals at school at no cost to them.

However, the USDA no longer has the authority to grant these waivers and school meal service will resume through the national school lunch program and school breakfast program, just as it did prior to COVID-19 pandemic.

Students may still receive meals at no cost or a reduced cost if approved based on income eligibility. Forms will be sent home with students at the beginning of the school year or you can contact your individual school.

Over 1100 voters have cast ballots through 3 days of early voting

Early voting for the August 4 election began on Friday, July 15. Through three days of early voting (July 15, 16 and 18), a total of 1,144 total votes have been cast. Of those, 460 are county voters, 431 reside in Tullahoma and 253 reside in Manchester.

Monday, July 18 has been the heaviest day of early voting so far, with 535 total votes cast on that day.

Those interested in voting early will have multiple opportunities to do so.

Early voting in Manchester is at the Coffee County Election Commission, located at 1329 McArthur St. Suite 6. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 to noon on Saturdays July 15-30.

Meanwhile, in Tullahoma early voting is at the CD Stamps Center at 810 South Jackson St. Hours are 9a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays July 15-30.

“Coffee County voters need to be aware that the August ballot is longer than we normally see and will take additional time to complete,” said Coffee County Elections Administrator Andy Farrar. “In this election you’ll have the opportunity to choose which candidates will advance to the general election in November, to retain or replace judges and elect Circuit and General Session Court Judges, District Attorney, Public Defender, County Mayor, County Commissioners, Sheriff, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Trustee, Circuit Court Clerk, Road Superintendent, Road Commissioners, School Board, Constables, Manchester City Mayor, Alderman and School Board, City of Tullahoma Alderman and School Board .”

Coffee County voters are encouraged to review their sample ballot before they head to the polls. Reviewing your ballot and deciding how you will vote can reduce your time at the polls.

“With the longer ballot in this election, I encourage Coffee County voters to make your voice heard during our state’s generous early voting period,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett.  “Casting your ballot early and reviewing your ballot before you go can reduce the amount of time it takes to vote.”

SCHEDULE RELEASE: 2022 Fall Hometown Sports Series Broadcasts return to Thunder Radio

Fall sports are around the corner and Thunder Radio is excited to announce that the Capstar Bank Hometown Sports Series broadcasts will return to the air this fall.

This will be the 9th year of Hometown Sports Series broadcasts on Thunder Radio – presented by Capstar Bank. There will also be online exclusive broadcasts as part of the series, courtesy of the Ben Lomand Connect Audio Stream at thunder1320.com.

Hometown Sports Series on Thunder Radio was conceived and launched 9 years ago by late WMSR sports director Dennis Weaver with the purpose of bringing high school volleyball and soccer, as well as middle school sports to the radio with the same enthusiasm of high school football.

“As we approach the two-year anniversary of Dennis Weaver’s passing (July 24, 2020), it is only appropriate that we announce that his vision all of those years ago remains alive and well and continues to grow,” said Josh Peterson, co-owner of Thunder Radio. “Thunder Radio will continue to highlight more athletes and more games for our local sports teams and that is what we are all about.”

Currently, Thunder Radio is scheduled to broadcast approximately 21 Hometown Sports Series games this fall. That number does NOT include Coffee County Central High School football games every Friday night or the Wednesday night Coach Doug Greene Show, which adds approximately 22 more local broadcasts through the fall. Those numbers also do not include any postseason broadcasts that may be possible.

“We take the role as a true community radio station seriously,” added Peterson. “Not only will you hear these games on the radio and on the internet this fall, but you’ll see our photographer (Holly Peterson) at most games and those photos can be found on the Thunder Radio Facebook page, thunder1320.com and in this fall’s edition of Thunder The Magazine.”

Fall Hometown Sports Series broadcast will feature Peterson and Courtney Steere behind the microphone.

(See tentative Fall Hometown Sports Broadcast Schedule below (High School football not included in this schedule). Schedule subject to change based on game schedule changes, weather and personnel availability. Air time is generally 10 minutes prior to game start time.)
