If there was any question about how the Central High School Lady Raiders would bounce back after a gut-wrenching loss to Blackman on Friday, they have been answered.

Three Lady Raiders hit double figures and CHS ended Rockvale’s six-game winning streak with a 64-34 drubbing Saturday night, Dec. 11, 2021 at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium in Manchester.

Junior Alivia Reel played arguably her best game of the year to lead the way for Coffee County – scoring 11 points (9 in the first half) – to go along with five assists and five steals. She was named Thunder Radio Stone Fort Mortgage Player of the Game.

“I could tell when A-Reel walked into the gym that she had a good mindset and was going to have a good night for us,” said Lady Raider head coach Joe Pat Cope. “We know she has that potential every night.”

Freshman Olivia Vinson and Senior Kiya Ferrell joined Reel with double-figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Vinson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and was 4-of-5 at the free throw line. CHS hit 18 free throws on the night.

Tullahoma woman indicted for abusing corpse of newborn

A Tullahoma woman has been indicted on charges of abuse of a corpse in relation to a case that dates back several years.

On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, Tullahoma Police received a call to Watts N Storage at 1004 Old Estill Springs Rd in Tullahoma regarding unidentified remains found in a storage unit that had recently been auctioned.

It was not readily apparent if the remains were human. Upon sending the remains to the medical examiner’s office, they determined that the remains were that of a human newborn.

According to a release from District Attorney General Craig Northcott, it was learned that the storage unit had been continuously rented by Melissa Sims McCann, 62, of Tullahoma, since March 1994.

Officers with Tullahoma Police Department discovered that she allegedly rented the unit for the sole purpose of storing the remains of her full-term newborn baby, according to a release from Northcott. The release goes on to state that the baby had been “delivered at home a few days prior to the renting of the unit.”

Coffee County grand jury indicted McCann for two counts of Abuse of a Corpse on Friday, Dec. 10.

“If further investigation establishes evidence of other crimes, additional indictments will be sought as appropriate,” Northcott states.

McCann is scheduled to appear in Coffee County Circuit Court for arraignment on Friday, Dec. 17 at 9 a.m.

Huge second half powers Raiders past Blackman

Coffee County exploded out of the locker room Friday night at Blackman.

The CHS Red Raiders erased a 23-15 halftime deficit with a 19-3 run to start the second half on their way to a 54-45 win over Blackman Friday night in Murfreesboro.

The win ends a 3-game skid for the Raiders and avenges a loss to the Blaze back on Nov. 29 in Manchester.

Almost everything went right for the Raiders in the second half. CHS smothered the Blaze and pounded the paint with senior post Connor Shemwell, who scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. Shemwell had his way with the Blaze interior all night. The Raiders also got 8 points from Dayne Crosslin and Cooper Reed.

The Raiders (5-3) will be back to work Saturday night when they host Rockvale. Girls at 6 p.m. and boys to follow.

Blackman bug bites Lady Raiders in final seconds

It looked for three and a half quarters like the Coffee County Lady Raiders were finally going to shake the Blackman curse.

But it all slipped away in the final two minutes and the Lady Raiders fell to the defending state champion Blackman Blaze 43-42 Friday night in Murfreesboro.

“We have to learn to handle ball pressure better down the stretch, that’s what I take away from this,” said Lady Raider senior Elli Chumley, who led the Lady Raiders with a game high 18 points.

Coffee County led 33-25 after three quarters. In fact, the Lady Raiders took an early lead and never trailed until late – leading 18-9 after one quarter and 20-16 at the half.

But Blackman closed the gap and finally took the lead 41-40 with 1:30 to play on a 3-pointer by Emily Monson.

Chumley responded immediately, getting into the paint and picking up a bucket of her own to put CHS back in front 42-41. But Monson went right back to work, hitting a difficult shot while running down the lane with 30 second to play to hit the final score. Chumley had a tough 3 at the buzzer but it was through difficult traffic.

“Take the defending state champions to the wire, there is a lot to like, but we have to learn to finish in games like this,” said Lady Raider head coach Joe Pat Cope. “Games like this get us ready for later in the season.

It was the 4th straight loss to the Lady Blaze for Coffee County – dating back to the region quarter finals in the spring of 2020. CHS lost to Blackman last year at home and twice this year – once by 9 and once by 1.

Chumley was named Stone Fort Mortgage Player of the Game.

Freshman Olivia Vinson scored 9 points for CHS and Chloe Gannon added 7.

In her first real significant floor time since returning from ACL surgery, junior Jalie Ruehling added 4 points – all on free throws.

Coffee County (3-3) will get back to work Saturday night, Dec. 11, when Rockvale comes to town. Tip is at 6 p.m. and you can hear all the action on Thunder Radio.

Blackman improves to 6-0 with the win.
