Three Lady Raiders hit double-figure points, led by junior Chloe Gannon as Coffee County Central easily disposed of Shelbyville 57-26 Tuesday night.

The win marks 14 straight for the Lady Raiders, who jumped to no. 6 in the state Associated Press poll this week.

Coffee County led the Eaglettes 25-12 at halftime and pulled away in the paint – Gannon scoring 17 points, 16 coming from the field. She played sparingly in the second half. Her sister Channah Gannon picked up the slack with 14 and freshman Olivia Vinson added 12 behind a pair of 3-pointers.

Most all of Coffee County’s points came from the field. CHS hit only 3 free throws on the night.

The win improves CHS to 17-3 overall, 3-0 and in first place in District 6-4A.

Raiders 62, Eagles 51

The Red Raiders completed the district sweep behind a strong night from their bench. CHS got 11 points from Cooper Reed and 9 from Jackson Shemwell off the bench to go along with 12 from Connor Shemwell in a 62-51 win. The scored looked closer after a buzzer-beating 3 by the Eagles.

Coffee County led by 5 at the half and 10 after 3 quarters. Shelbyville was able to close the gap to 5 at one point in the fourth quarter, but never got closer. Poor free-throw shooting hurt the Eagles, who went 7-of-17 at the charity stripe. Coffee County was 16-of-23.

The Raiders move to 2-1 in district play and in 2nd place.

Both Coffee County teams travel to Franklin County Friday. Tip is set for 6 p.m. for the girls with the boys to follow and both games will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio – 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, Manchester Go app and thunder1320.com

TAX TIPS: The IRS announces opening date

By Rosalyn Partin, Manchester H&R Block

The IRS has announced that they will begin processing returns on January 24, 2022 with the filing deadline April 18, 2022 in most areas. IRS accepts tax returns filed one of two ways: electronically through e-file and through the mail. Returns filed by a tax professional in an H&R Block office are usually e-filed. E-file is the quickest filing method — and typically helps you receive a tax refund faster. However, you can always choose to have your return printed to mail yourself.

IRS encourages everyone to have all the information they need in hand to make sure they file a complete and accurate return. Having an accurate tax return can avoid processing delays, refund delays and later IRS notices. This is especially important for people who received advance Child Tax Credit payments or Economic Impact Payments (stimulus payments) in 2021. You will need the amounts of these payments when preparing your tax return. The IRS is mailing special letters to recipients, and you can also check the amounts you received by registering for an account on IRS.gov.

Like last year, there will be individuals filing tax returns who, even though they are not required to file, need to file a 2021. This year people who don’t normally file and may not have any taxable income could receive credits resulting in a significant refund.

In most cases your filing status, age, and gross income determine if you are required to file a tax return. However, there are other reasons a taxpayer may need or want to file, especially this year. Here are some reasons you may want to file a return even if you are not required to file:

  • Your employer withheld federal income tax from your pay
  • You are eligible to receive the Earned Income Credit
  • You have a qualifying child under 18 years old at the end of 2021
  • You, your spouse, or your dependent has qualifying education expense for 2021
  • You didn’t receive your full 3rd Economic Impact Payment based on your 2021 information

H&R Block is ready to prepare your tax return now! And even though IRS won’t begin processing returns until January 24 and refunds aren’t expected to be released until early to mid February, when you file through H&R Block you may be able to receive up to $3,500 within minutes of filing!

Call now to schedule your appointment at H&R Block. As always, we also accept walk-in clients at your convenience. Open Monday through Friday 9am-7pm and Saturday 9am-5pm.

If you have questions or want to schedule an appointment, please call H&R Block in Manchester TN at 931-728-9462. H&R Block Has Your Back!

Tennessee pump prices inch higher; local prices fall slightly

Tennessee’s gas price average rose a penny from last week. The Tennessee Gas Price average is now $3.03 which is two cents more than a month ago and 84 cents more than one year ago.

“Gasoline prices continue to edge upward, driven primarily by the price surge in crude oil, which closed over $84 a barrel last week,” said Stephanie Milani, Tennessee Public Affairs Director, AAA-The Auto Club Group.  “As crude prices continue to climb, pump prices in Tennessee will likely follow suit.”

Gas prices in Coffee County have dropped over the past week – now down to $2.98, which is back below the state average by 5 cents, and 33 cents below the national average of $3.31.

National Average Increases as Crude Prices Climb

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is one cent higher than last week at $3.31 today. According to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), total domestic gasoline stocks rose by 7.9 million barrels to 240.7 million barrels last week. On the other hand, gasoline demand decreased from 8.17 million barrels a day to 7.91 million barrels a day. Winter weather and the COVID-19 omicron variant are the likely culprits behind this demand dip. Typically, pump prices decline due to lower gas demand and a rise in total stocks, but continued growth in the price of crude oil has helped to elevate pump prices.
