The Manchester Youth Baseball Association featured a full slate of games on Tuesday night at Fred Deadman Park.  Ten games filled the schedule as all 5 age divisions were in action.

In the 6U division, Star Physical Therapy knocked off Lovelady Auto Parts 18 to 16 and Manchester Tire and Brake thumped Cooper Sports 21 to 8.  In the opener, both teams were able to put up runs aplenty but Star was able to plate an extra run in the 1st and the 3rd and that proved to be the difference.  Laine Jones had 2 triples and a home run to lead Star.  Issac, Reed and Jax all had a double and 2 singles for Lovelady.  In the nightcap, Manchester Tire and Brake scored in every inning with their potent offense and held Cooper scoreless in 2 innings with their stingy defense.   Jacob Whaley led the hit parade for Manchester Tire as he had 2 home runs and a single.  Landon and Easton each had a pair of singles and scored twice for Cooper.

In the 8U division, Dr. Jay’s bounced Freedom Automotive 19 to 17 and KK’s squeaked by Interstate Auto 14 to 13.  In the 1st game, it was a battle of the top 2 teams in the division, with the winner taking over first place.   As expected, the game went into extra innings.  Dr. Jay’s turned a huge double play in the final frame to help capture the win.  Sterling and Kolton led Dr. Jay’s as each scored 4 times.  Deacon crossed the plate 3 times for Freedom Automotive.   In the 2nd game, KK’s fell behind 7 to 4 before erupting for 6 runs in the 5th inning to cut the deficit to 1 run entering the 6th inning.  KK’s scored 4 times in the final inning to capture the exciting win.  Walker had 4 hits and scored 4 times to lead KK’s.  Keyton matched that effort for Interstate.

Fred Mandich of Viam(in blue) slides safely into home under the tag of First National Bank Pitcher Ethan Reed(in maroon) on Tuesday in 10U division action of the Manchester Youth Baseball Association

In the 10U division, Viam edged First National Bank 14 to 13 and State Farm rolled up Chico’s 15 to 3. In Game #1, Viam jumped out to a 5 to 0 lead in the 1st inning and looked like they had the game won, but First National scored 5 runs in the 5th inning to break an 8 all tie.  But Viam rallied to plate 6 runs in the bottom of the inning to grab the win.  Ty Stevens led Viam with a single and a triple and 2 RBI.  Steven Lombardo had 2 singles and 3 RBI for First National.  After a slow start in game #2, State Farm exploded for 13 runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to remain unbeaten on the season.  Xander Meeks led State Farm with a home run, a single and 3 RBI.  Christian Meadows had 2 walks and scored twice for Chico’s.

Lane Johnson(#12) crosses the plate and is mobbed by his First Vision Bank teammates after hitting a home run on Tuesday in 12U division action of the Manchester Youth Baseball Association

The win pulled Clower Automotive into a first place tie in the standings.  Clower was led in hitting by Caleb who had a single, a home run and a walk and scored 3 times.  Brycen Campbell and Justin Franks each finished with a walk and a double for Powers.

Zack Brown(#3 in dark blue) slides into 2nd base after a successful steal against the Expos On Tuesday night in 18U action of the Manchester Youth Baseball Association

TSSAA Meets Wednesday on Football Plan

Story from our radio partner WGNS – Murfreesboro

The TSSAA Board of Control will meet Wednesday to decide a way forward with high school football and other fall contact sports. This after the governor last week extended the state of emergency until August 29th.  While there are options on the table – one is to ask for an exemption from the governor’s order and start the season on time.

If there is no exemption or the order isn’t lifted before August 29th, the season would be pushed back to mid-September. Several scenarios as to what the season and playoffs would look like are out there. A few include:

• A seven-week region schedule and playoffs as usual (schools not making playoffs could play two extra games)

• An eight-game region schedule and only the top two go to playoffs (first round eliminated and schools not making playoffs could play two extra games)

• Keeping the current schedule but starting with Week 5 and tacking on the region games missed to the end of the season with just one playoff qualifier. (schools not making playoffs could play one extra game)

• Canceling playoffs and start with September 18th games and move the four missed games to the end of the season

Braves 2020 Schedule Released on Monday Night

The 2019 postseason ended with the Nationals lifting the first World Series championship trophy in franchise history. On July 23, the 2020 regular season will begin with Washington starting its title defense.

The 2020 schedule, which Major League Baseball unveiled live on MLB Network on Monday night, features a tantalizing two-game Opening Night slate on the 23rd, broadcast on ESPN. First, the Nats will host the Yankees at 7:08 p.m. ET, in a matchup that could showcase Gerrit Cole making his Bombers debut against three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. That potential battle of aces will lead into the renewal of one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries, as the Dodgers launch their quest for an eighth consecutive National League West crown against the Giants at Dodger Stadium (10:08 p.m. ET).

Those juicy headliners lead the way for a revised slate that has been shortened to 60 games per team by the coronavirus pandemic. It’s a schedule that will look quite a bit different from before — with an increased emphasis on geographical proximity — but which will not lack for urgency or drama.

Following the pair of games on July 23, MLB-wide action begins on July 24. Opening Day presented by Mastercard and T-Mobile offers a 14-game menu — including the Braves visiting the Mets.  A full 15-game slate awaits on July 25. (The Nats and Yankees will be the only teams off on July 24.)

Each club’s slate of 60 games includes 40 against opponents from its own division (10 apiece), plus 20 spread among those from the opposite league’s corresponding geographical division (East vs. East, Central vs. Central and West vs. West). That will all set up the postseason, which will maintain the same 10-team format, which includes two Wild Card teams from each league.

Here is a more detailed breakdown of the revised 60-game schedules, which will run through Sept. 27.

40 divisional games (20 home, 20 road)

• 10 games against each opponent, split between three series

• Each of these matchups will have either one team playing seven games at home and three on the road, or six at home and four on the road.

20 Interleague games (10 home, 10 road)

• Six games against the team’s natural Interleague rival (three home, three road)

• Four games apiece against two other opponents in the corresponding division (two home, two road)

• One three-game home series against a fourth opponent

• One three-game road series against a fifth opponent

Each club will have six off-days, except for the four teams beginning the season on July 23. They will have seven apiece.

Here’s the key info and schedule highlights for the Braves

Opening Day: at Mets — Friday, July 24 (4:10 p.m. ET)

Home opener: vs. Rays — Wednesday, July 29 (7:10 p.m. ET)

Notable early series: The Braves are scheduled to play a four-game road series against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park from Aug. 7-10. Philadelphia was the only NL East club against which Atlanta had a losing record last season (9-10).

Highlights: The Braves host the Nationals from Aug. 17-19. Atlanta claimed the NL East crown in 2019, but the Nats one-upped them by winning the World Series. Atlanta also visits Fenway Park from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 during a 17-game stretch against the Nationals, Phillies, Yankees and Red Sox.

Thunder Radio will once again bring you Braves baseball broadcasts as part of the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.  You can see the full schedule at: https://www.mlb.com/braves/schedule/2020-07
