CHS Softball Finishes Lincoln County Tournament with 1 and 2 Saturday

With the majority of their starters missing on Saturday due to the CHS Prom, the Lady Raider softball concluded play in the Lincoln County Border Battle.  Coffee County played 3 games on the day coming away with a 1 and 2 record.  Coffee County opened play on Saturday morning with a 7 to 4 walk-off loss to Page.  The Lady Raiders opened tournament play with a 4 to 2 win over Stewarts Creek before being eliminated by Hazel Green, Alabama.

Despite 2 different leads for Coffee County against Page, the Lady Patriots hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 5th inning to end the game due to the expiration of time.  Coffee County grabbed a 1 to 0 lead in the first inning and a 4 to 3 lead in the 3rd inning.  Raven Rogers had 3 singles and scored twice for the Lady Raiders.  Shelby Scrivnor added a single, a triple and 2 RBI.  Ashley Evans and Keri Munn each had 2 hits.

In the win over Stewarts Creek, the Lady Raiders plated 4 runs in the 3rd inning with the big blast being a 3 run home run from Jayden Scheller.  Scheller added a single and scored once.  Rogers added a single and a double and 1 run scored.  Keri Munn pitched a complete game 4 hitter striking out 6 batters in 6 innings of work.

Hazel Green jumped on the Lady Raiders in the first inning scoring 7 runs to put the game out of reach.  Coffee County surrendered 11 unearned runs after committing 5 errors and was held to 3 hits on the game.  Eliza Carden, Ashley Evans and Shelby Scrivnor each finished with a single for the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Raiders are set to travel to Marshall County on Monday afternoon for a non-district contest with the Lady Tigers.  Weather permitting, that game will get underway at 5:30 PM.

Predators Shut Out Avalanche in Game 6

Pekka Rinne

The Nashville Predators advanced to the Western Conference Second Round with a 5-0 win against the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6 of the first round at Pepsi Center on Sunday.

Pekka Rinne made 22 saves for the Predators, who will play the Winnipeg Jets in the second round.

Viktor Arvidsson, Nick Bonino, Filip Forsberg, Austin Watson and Mattias Ekholm scored for Nashville.

Andrew Hammond made 32 saves for Colorado.

The Predators took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Ekholm and Watson.

Colton Sissons passed across to Ekholm in the left face-off circle for a shot past a screened Hammond at 7:02 to make it 1-0. It was the first goal by a Predators defenseman in the series.

Watson made it 2-0 at 10:19. Bonino, who had two assists, gained possession in the left corner after an Avalanche turnover and passed to Sissons, who skated through the slot as Nathan MacKinnon got tangled with Hammond, who scrambled along the ice. Sissons shot through the crease off the left post and Watson banged in the loose puck.

Forsberg scored 38 seconds into the second period to make it 3-0. He skated down the left wing on a 2-on-1 rush and shot between Hammond’s left arm and body.

Bonino made it 4-0 when he scored from the top of the slot at 8:26 of the second with a shot that went in off Hammond’s blocker 13 seconds after the Avalanche killed a penalty.

The Predators made it 5-0 on Arvidsson’s goal at 2:36 of the third period.

Storm Chasers Defeat Sounds 4-1, Clinch Series

The Nashville Sounds were edged by the Omaha Storm Chasers 4-1 in Sunday’s matinee. The victory clinched the three-game series for Omaha.

Nashville’s Frankie Montas and Omaha’s Clay Bucholz went toe-to-toe on the mound as they both cruised through the first five innings without allowing a run. Omaha finally broke the seal on the scoreless ball game in the sixth inning. After inducing a fly out to begin the inning, Montas yielded a single to Logan Moon and walked Ramon Torres before being pulled from the game.

Bobby Wahl entered in relief and balked before throwing his first pitch, allowing Moon and Torres to each advance a base. Back-to-back doubles from MLB rehabbers Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon gave the Storm Chasers a lead they would not relinquish.

The Sounds responded in the top of the seventh inning as Franklin Barreto swatted his second home run of the season to lead off the frame. That would be all the offense Nashville could muster.

Montas finished with 5 1/3 innings and allowed a pair of runs on three hits while walking one and fanning three. Bucholz lasted an inning longer, going 6 1/3 allowing the lone Sounds run of the game, walking one and striking out three.

Nick Dini belted a solo blast off Wahl to lead off the seventh inning and give the Storm Chasers a bit of insurance. Wahl went a season-long 2 2/3 innings and allowed his first runs of the season while notching five punch outs.

The Sounds will try and salvage a win as they wrap up their three-game series against the Storm Chasers Monday morning. Right-hander Daniel Gossett (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Sounds against left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic for the Storm Chasers. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.

  • Frankie Montas lasted 5 1/3 innings, his longest outing since August 21, 2015 when he went six innings for Double-A Birmingham. Sunday afternoon was Montas’ 51st game and 18th start since then.
  • Nashville has now scored fewer than four runs in 12 of their 17 games. The Sounds are now 3-9 when failing to score four runs.

Avs Stay Alive with 2 to 1 Win over Predators

Sven Andrighetto scored with 1:28 left to give the Colorado Avalanche a 2-1 victory over Nashville Predators 2-1 on Friday night, sending the first-round series back to Denver for Game 6.

This is the third time the Avalanche had trailed 3-1 in a series since the franchise relocated to Colorado. They lost the first two, but will have a chance Sunday to push this series to a seventh game after rallying with two goals in the final 4:11.

Gabriel Landeskog started the rally with his goal into an empty net with Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne caught outside the crease with his own teammate Ryan Ellis in his lap. Then Andrighetto gave the Avs the lead off a rebound of a shot by J.T. Compher that stunned a sold-out Nashville crowd that had expected to celebrate advancing to the second round.

Andrew Hammond made a career-high 44 saves for his first postseason victory in his first playoff start since April 17, 2015, with Ottawa and just the third of his career.

“It’s one of those things I’ve learned in my career: You never know when you’re going to get a second chance,” Hammond said. “I’ve played two games basically since the start of January – at times it felt as though that day would never come again when you’re going to play again. You keep battling in practice, you stick to the process, when you get your chance, you’re ready.”

The series winner will face Winnipeg in the second round.

Nick Bonino scored for Nashville.

This game was scoreless until Bonino’s goal with 9:42 left, a big change for a series that had been the highest-scoring of the first round averaging 7.25 goals per game coming into Game 5. But the goalie nicknamed the “Hamburglar” came through with a dazzling performance for his first postseason victory.

The Predators peppered the Avs’ backup to their backup goalie. The only time Nashville beat Hammond was when Mattias Ekholm’s shot bounced off his left pad and went in off Bonino’s right skate. The official on the spot immediately waved it off. Officials huddled, then reviewed the play.

During the review, fans sang “Let It Be” while holding up their cellphones with the flash on. Referee Kevin Pollock announced the call on the ice had been overturned , starting a long-awaited celebration.

The lead didn’t last long as Landeskog tapped the puck into an open net off a feed from Nathan MacKinnon.

The Avalanche came into the postseason with goalie Semyon Varlamov and defenseman Erik Johnson sidelined by knee injuries, then defenseman Samuel Girard missed three games with his own upper-body injury before Jonathan Bernier, Varlamov’s backup, suffered his own lower-body injury. That pushed the Hamburglar into the net.

Nashville countered with its usual catfish on the ice before the puck dropped and the members of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans secondary waving the rally towel for fans.

The Predators started and ended the second period on the power play but couldn’t beat Hammond. Their best scoring chance came with a 4 on 2, but Hammond stopped Roman Josi’s shot and then handled Calle Jarnkrok’s attempt off the rebound at 12:36. Hammond also made a big pad save on Ellis’ slap shot and then stopped another Josi shot late in the period.

NOTES: The Avalanche snapped a seven-game skid in Nashville with the win. They ended a 12-game skid to the Preds overall in Game 3. … Nashville had been perfect last postseason with a chance to clinch a series on its own ice, winning all three series to reach the Stanley Cup Final. … Predators forward Ryan Hartman sat out his suspension for a hit on Carl Soderbeg in Game 4.
