Christina Warren Croft, age 45, of Estill Springs, Tn died Friday, September 14, 2018.
No services are planned.
A native of Marietta Georgia, she was the daughter of Larry Warren, Sr. and Partricia Elliott Ketchersid who survive. Mrs. Croft loved her family and dogs, enjoyed television and facebook. Her favorite colors were pink and black.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Croft is survived by her husband, Robert, son: Dakota Thompson, daughter: Tela Warren, sisters, Crystal Brown, and Michelle Wilson, brothers:
Larry Randall Warren, Jr. and Steven Guess and grandchildren: Karson Thompson, and Paiyten Thompson.

9/18/18 — Steven Mark Shanes

Steven Mark Shanes, age 62, of Shelbyville, Tn died Friday, September 14, 2018 at St. Thomas Hospital West.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at Liggett Andrews Cemetery in Lewisburg, TN. The family will receive friends at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5 until 8 PM.
A native of Nashville, TN, he was the son of the late Elmer Russell and Frances Johnson Shanes. Mr. Shanes was a construction worker who loved the outdoors, fishing and especially loved his grandchildren.
Mr. Shanes is survived by his son, Steven Marks Shanes, Jr. and wife, Kayla, brothers: Paul Lee Shanes and Richie East, sister: Pam Burton, grandchildren: Steven Mark Shanes, III and Devin and Darrin Bass and best: friend Carl Poarch.

Coffee County Football Gets Region Win at Warren County

With the Warren County Fair taking place in McMinnville, senior Andrew Mahaffey put his Coffee County football team on his back for a ride on Friday night.  The senior rushed 35 times for 303 yards as the Raiders returned to region play with a convincing win over the Pioneers.  Taking on their bitter rival, Coffee County ground out a 35 to 13 win.

The Red Raiders got a pair of touchdown runs from Mahaffey in the 1st quarter to build a 21 to 7 lead after the first 12 minutes.  A pair of long touchdown runs by Warren County sent the 2 teams to the locker room at halftime with Coffee County up 21 to 13.  In the second half, quarterback Matthew Pittman hit Trace Bryant for a 25 yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter and Marshall Haney rushed for a 10 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter to close out the scoring.

With his 303 yard performance, Mahaffey was named the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game.  Pittman rushed 10 times for 64 yards with a rushing and a passing touchdown.  Haney finished with 13 yards on 3 carries as Coffee County improves to 1 and 1 in region play.

The Red Raiders return home next Friday night to Carden-Jarrell.  Coffee County will play host to Cookeville.  That game will kick off at 7 PM and Thunder Radio will once again be your source for exclusive coverage.  Lucky Knott and Dustin Murray will bring you the kickoff at 7 PM, Thunder Radio’s live coverage begins with the pregame show at 6 PM.

Lady Raider Volleyball Goes 2 and 3 in Saturday Tournament

The Coffee County Lady Raider volleyball team hosted the Southern Slam Tournament on Saturday.  Playing matches at the Coffee County Middle School, the Raider Academy and Central High School, The Lady Raiders welcomed 16 teams to town.  Finishing the day with a record of 2 and 3, the Lady Raiders qualified for the for the Golf Bracket finals before being eliminated.

The Lady Raiders opened play on Saturday morning with a straight set win over Tullahoma.  Coffee County defeated Tullahoma by set scores of 25-8 and 25-20.  In the second match, the Lady Raiders beat Grundy County 25-19 and 25-17.  In their final pool match of the day, Coffee County fell to Columbia Academy.  The Lady Raiders lost by set scores of 24-26 and 19-25.  In the championship round, Coffee County was swept by Lawrence County and Community.

For the day, Coffee County was led in kills by Kiya Ferrell who finished with 27 while Keri Munn finished with 20.  Amanda Mukai led the Lady Raiders in aces with 11 and assists with 32.  Munn had the team lead in blocks with 5 and Sarah West was the team leader in digs with 24.

Coffee County travels to Lincoln County on Tuesday for a pivotal district battle.  Opening serve is set for 6:30 PM.

Local Runners Excel at Cross Country Meet at Old Stone Fort

Hosting their first meet of the year, the Coffee County CHS cross country team welcomed 16 high school and middle school teams to the Old Stone Fort State Park on Tuesday.  Included in the field were the middle school teams from Coffee County Middle School and Westwood Middle School.

In the middle school girls’ race, Coffee County Middle School’s Greenlee Woods charged to the lead in the final 100 yards to win in a time of 14:03.4 for the 2 mile race.  Rylea McNamara of Westwood finished in 4th place at 15:22.8.  Westwood finished in 4th place in the team standings.  Coffee Middle did not field enough runners to place in the team standings.

In the middle school boys’ race, Lucas Beaty finished 2nd and Bradley Escue finished in 3rd place for the top local runners.  Beaty ran a time of 13:25 and Escue finished in 13.26.9.  Aiden Smith was the top finisher for Westwood.  Smith had a time of 13:54.7.  Coffee Middle finished in 2nd place in the team standings.  Westwood did not field enough runners to place in the team standings.

In the high school races, Coffee County won both the boys’ and girls’ 5K races.  Patricia Barrera won the girls’ race at 22:22.2.  Teammate Madison Rooker was 2nd at 22:44.9 as the Lady Raiders finished in 2nd place in the team standings 3 points behind Grundy County.  For the boys’, Jacob Rutledge won the race with a time of 18:17.8.  Renato Ayala finished 3rd in a time of 19:32.4.  The Red Raiders won the team title as they beat out Lincoln County by 55 points for the title.

The Westwood runners will be back in action on Tuesday, September 18th when they travel to Fayetteville for a match at Don Davidson Park.  The Coffee County Middle School runners will be back in action on Saturday, September 22nd when they compete in the TSSAA Sectional Meet in Murfreesboro.  That meet gets underway at 9 AM at Riverdale.  The CHS runners are back in action on Friday, September 28th when they travel to Sewanee for a meet at St. Andrew’s.

7 Years Later Man Convicted on Sex Charges

In October 2011 a Tullahoma businessman was arrested by police on sex charges.
Shannon Eugene Amos, of Carr Creek Road, Normandy, who was 39 at the time, was arrested by Tullahoma Police Investigator Harry Conway on sealed indictments from the Coffee County Grand Jury for aggravated statutory rape and sexual battery by an authority figure.
According to the two-count indictment, Amos was accused of being in a position of trust or had supervisory or disciplinary power over a female and he allegedly used that position to accomplish the sexual contact with the female under the age of 18.
He was released from jail after posting a bond of $25,000.
On Thursday (Sept. 13, 2018) after almost 7 years after being arrested Amos, now 46, was convicted for having sex with the teenager who worked in his Tullahoma business. Amos was found guilty after a 7-day trial.
According to Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott, Amos was convicted of Aggravated Statutory Rape, Statutory Rape by Authority Figure, and Sexual Battery by Authority Figure.
Judge Venessa Jackson denied the prosecution’s request to revoke bond pending sentencing, but the D.A.’s office filed a written motion for her to reconsider and that motion will be heard Wednesday (Sept. 19).
Sentencing for Amos is set for November 28th.
Assistant District Attorney Jason Ponder prosecuted the case and Attorney Ray Fraley defended.

 

Manchester Chamber of Commerce Names New Executive Director

The Manchester Chamber of Commerce has named Katy Riddle as executive director.
In this role, she will be responsible for leading the organization, engaging members, and continuing to establish the Chamber as a resource for the Manchester business community.
“We think Katy is the person to continue moving the Chamber forward and are thrilled to have her as part of our team,” said Chamber Board President Kevin Sherrill. “I think her energy, experience and mindset will allow her to be very successful in this position.”
Riddle, a Manchester resident, comes to the Manchester Chamber from the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, where she served as director of communications and marketing for the past seven years, overseeing all of the organization’s communication efforts.
She brings almost 20 years of experience in marketing, program development and public relations. She has worked for Nashville-based public relations firms Katcher, Vaughn and Bailey Communications and Dye, Van Mol & Lawrence, and also served as assistant director in the Office of Alumni Relations and publicity and outreach coordinator in the Career Development Center at Middle Tennessee State University. She and husband Brad have a daughter, Karsyn, and a son, Clay.
She will officially start on Monday, Oct. 15. She replaces Terri Hudson, who left the position to return to her home state of Kentucky.

Suspect Dies while being confronted by Warren County Sheriff Deputies

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating an incident in which a suspect died while being confronted by Warren County sheriff deputies on Friday afternoon.
Preliminary information indicates deputies were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle driven by a man identified as 30 year-old Alexander K. Webb. Webb reportedly crashed the vehicle in a wooded area along Harrison Ferry Road and fled the scene on foot. A deputy caught up with Webb and tried to take him into custody. Webb would not comply with verbal commands and at some point during the confrontation became unresponsive. Attempts by deputies to revive Webb were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
TBI agents are investigating and will submit their findings to the District Attorney General’s office. The officers involved were not identified as per TBI policy.

FDA says E-Cigarettes an “Epidemic” in Teenager Use

The Food and Drug Administration has referred to e-cigarettes as an “epidemic” as teen use increases.
FDA officials are concerned over e-cig brands catering to children with fruity flavors, with many teens using them not knowing of the nicotine inside.
FDA has ordered certain brands to submit a plan to cut teen use of their products. They have 60 days to do such.
The agency has sent warning letters to over 1,000 retailers over selling e-cigarettes to minors and fined 131 retailers over the sales.
The FDA is also considering restricting sales of flavored nicotine liquid.

Temple Baptist Volleyball Claims Tournament Title

The Lady Eagle varsity volleyball team of Temple Baptist Christian captured the title of the Lady Eagle Invitational on Friday.  Temple finished the tournament with a 6 and 0 record.  Temple captured the tournament title with a pair of match wins over South Haven of Springfield.

In pool play, the Lady Eagles opened with a 2 set win over Victory Baptist of Shelbyville.  Temple won by set scores of 25-16 and 21-8.  In the pool play final, the Lady Eagles topped Madison Baptist out of Alabama in straight sets.  Temple won by set scores of 25-13 and 25-12.

In the championship bracket, the Lady Eagles opened up with a straight set win over Dogwood Christian of Georgia.  Temple captured the straight set win by set scores of 25-14 and 25-11.  In the quarterfinals, Temple swept Anchored out of Bowling Green, Kentucky by set scores of 25-9, 25-9.  In the winner’s bracket finals, Temple beat South Haven in 2 sets.  The Lady Eagles won by set scores of 25-15, and 25-13.  In the finals, Temple needed 3 sets to capture the title.  The Lady Eagles won by set scores of 25-21, 12-25 and 15-4.

The junior varsity team ended up with a 4th place finish.  Ruby Lawson was named to the JV all-tournament team.  For the varsity team, Grace Butler and Lexie Stewart were named to the all-tournament team.  Rachel Butler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Temple returns to the court on Saturday when the travel to Murfreesboro for a varsity/JV doubleheader.  The Lady Eagles will take on Franklin Road Christian in the road match.  First serve is set for 11 AM.
