4/26/12 —- Howard Buford “Bootsie” Goforth
Funeral services for Mr. Howard Buford “Bootsie” Goforth, age 69, of Manchester, will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 26 at Manchester Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. John Bush officiating.
Burial will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Goforth passed away Sunday evening at Life Care Center in Tullahoma.
Mr. Goforth was born in Coffee County, TN, the son of the late James Buford and Nellie Letha McMahan Goforth. In earlier years, he was employed at Batesville Casket Company. Bootsie enjoyed fishing, watching wrestling and westerns, and playing rook but his greatest love was coaching Babe Ruth baseball. He was the coach of the Braves Babe Ruth ball team for 35 of the 36 years that he was involved in the league. He was recognized in the all-star edition of “Who’s Who in Babe Ruth League” at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
In addition to his parents, Bootsie was also preceded in death by one sister, Deborah Kay Smartt. He is survived by one brother, Steve Thomas Goforth and one sister, Martha Fay Hahn, both of Manchester; nieces, Celeste Francisco, Christy Smartt, Alethia Rawn, Tracy Goforth, and Sherri Briggs; nephews, Gary Smartt and Brian Goforth; many great nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Park Partners, Attn: Bonnie Gamble, P.O. Box 776, Manchester, TN 37349, which will be used to benefit Babe Ruth Baseball in Manchester.

Charter Business Student Athlete of the Week
This week’s Charter Business Student Athlete of the Week is seventh grader Kaylee Skipper. The Coffee County Middle School Softball Player was chosen not only because she had a great week on the mound as a pitcher and also at the plate as a batter but also due to her leadership on and off the field. It’s also said she is a team player and would produce regardless of the position she’s asked to play.
4/24/12 — Clarence Alvin Jernigan
Clarence Alvin Jernigan, age 81 of Decherd, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his family.
A loving father and grandfather, he worked for L&N Railroad for 29 years and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Joseph Jernigan and Eva Mae Lewis Jernigan; first wife, Tina “Tiny” Faye Bryant Jernigan; brothers, Kelly Jernigan, Jim Jernigan, Alex Jernigan, L. Y. “Mood” Jernigan and Floyd Jernigan; and sisters, Bertha Lillian Jernigan, Earlene Cook and Geneva Jernigan.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie Jane Jernigan of Decherd; children, Doris (Larry) Baker of Decherd, Carolyn (Norman) Payne of South Pittsburg, Zella Ruth (Jerry) Sons and Eddie (Lynn) Jernigan of Winchester; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Visitation is 5-8 PM Monday at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Moore-Cortner Chapel with interment at Mt. Garner Cemetery.
Cody Jernigan, Clancy Baker, Kevin Payne, Tim Sons, Mark Sons and Jerry Sons will be serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearer, Jim Jernigan.

4/25/12 — Daniel “Dan” J. Mears
Mr. Daniel “Dan” J. Mears, age 90, of Estill Springs, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his residence on Saturday, April 21, 2012 following an extended illness. Mr. Mears was a patriotic, community-minded person who was involved in local politics. He served as a Staff Sergeant in WWII in the 452nd Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in England. He worked for Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY for more than 35 years as an engineer and was a patent holder. He was also Chairman of the Elmira, NY Chapter of Society of Manufacturing Engineers. After retiring and moving to Tenn., Dan served on the Franklin County Beautification Committee and helped set up convenience centers in the area. He also was a VITA volunteer.
Mr. Mears had a warm heart and an off-beat sense of humor. He worked with wood and could figure out how to fix everything. He was also proud Captain of the Mears family’s mighty Yankee Rebel pontoon boat. Throughout his life, he presided over a houseful of women from his wife and daughters to dogs and guinea pigs.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruthe Mears. He is survived by daughters; Dana Mears, Kim Mears both of Estill Springs, Teri Mears of Huntsville, Ala., Mary Mears of Jersey City, N.J. a sister, Sandra Brooks of Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of Grant Funeral Services.

Five Coffee County Residents Face Federal Charges
Five Coffee County residents were arrested on federal sealed indictments. Richard Anthony, Audrey Williams, William Williams, Timothy Baltimore and Jeff Hill were named in sealed indictments on charges conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamines of more than 500 grams. They were transported to Chattanooga where they appeared before a federal magistrate who ordered them held without bond. The arrest of the five was the joint operation between the Manchester Police, Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
Fire At Manchester Motel
Manchester Fire Department responded to a fire call Friday night at 9:45pm at the Budget Motel on the Hillsboro Blvd. When fire and other emergency vehicles arrived they found smoke coming from the roof of the building. Most of the damage was the left side of the building and especially room 109 where the fire apparently started. No one was in the room at the time the smoke and fire began. No injuries were reported and an investigation continues into the cause.
Tullahoma Man Charged With Statutory Rape
A Tullahoma man from East Coffee Street has been charged with statutory rape after allegations surfaced regarding him and a 17 year old. According to a report by Tullahoma Police Officer Daryn Gadeken, Craig Patrick Barabas, 37, of East Coffee Street was charged with statutory rape of a 17-year old girl. The officer was called to a report of an unruly juvenile. When he arrived the father of the girl advised him that he had been having problems with his daughter and that she had admitted to him that she had been have sex with the man. The case was turned over to Investigator Harry Conway who talked with the teenager and she admitted to “several sexual encounters” between the start of spring and April 16. Barabas was arrested by the investigator and charged with statutory rape and placed in the Coffee County Jail under a $10,000 bond. He is to appear in general session court May 3.
Golf Course Will NOT Close
Golfers who enjoy playing at the Arnold Golf Course will not need to find a new place hit the links. Despite talk about the course closing. According to the AEDC Director of Public Affairs, there are no plans to close the golf course. That, however, has not always been the case. The spokesperson said that the course operates on a “break-even cost model. As part of a process to determine where costs could be reduced. The course’s financial situation has since improved in recent times and the facility is no longer on the chopping block. Officials say that the drop in the number of golfers playing at Arnold over the past two years to Mother Nature’s effect on the property. They say that weather and disease to the greens was not kind to Arnold Golf Course in 2010 and early 2011.
Tullahoma Prepares For Widening Project
Elk River Public Utility District employees have been working on Cedar Lane to relocate gas utility lines in preparation for the widening of that street. Because of the work Tullahoma Police are asking motorists to slow down when driving through the area. Mayor Lane Curlee and Public Works Director Wayne Limbaugh agree that in the coming weeks employees will be working near the Forrest Gallery Shopping Center and drivers should slow down to accommodate their situation. In addition to Elk River’s gas line work, the project involves moving Tullahoma Utilities Board’s electrical and broadband communications lines, and broadband communications lines by Charter Communications and AT&T Corp. Plans are to have the project ready to go to bid sometime in May. They added he expects the project to be completed in late summer 2013.
Suspected Child Rapist Caught
Marion County Deputies have arrested a man wanted for child rape. Authorities in the east Tennessee had been looking for Joshua Luke Mitchell since last Sunday. Authorities believed he had fled the state, but Sheriff Bo Burnett says Mitchell was spotted by State Troopers Thursday evening on Highway 41. Burnett says Mitchell was arrested shortly before 7:30 p.m. behind the Riverside Catfish House after a short foot chase. Mitchell is accused of raping a four-year-old girl he was reportedly babysitting. He is a registered sex offender in Texas, North Carolina, and Alabama.
