4/26/14 —- Wanza Aletha Capshaw

Mrs. Wanza Aletha Capshaw, age 80, of Normandy, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, April 26 at 1 PM at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Roger Rhoton and Bro. Bill Bynum officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation with the family will be Friday, April 25 from 5 -9 PM at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home.

A native of Moore County, she was the daughter of the late Wiley and Edna Woosley Smith.

Mrs. Capshaw was a homemaker and member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church. She enjoyed flower gardening and camping. She and her husband, the late Wendell Alan Capshaw were members of the Gold Wing Club and enjoyed touring the United States on their motorcycles.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Bruce Alan Capshaw; one daughter, Pamela Jean Phillips and four brothers, Claude, Clyde, Clayton and Carl Smith.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Page and her fiancé, Ron Russ of Manchester; twelve grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

4/27/14 — Burton M. “Melvin” Auspitz

Mr. Burton M. “Melvin” Auspitz,  age 83 of Manchester, Tennessee passed away, Wednesday, April 23, 2014  at TVHCS, York Campus, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow at Concord Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home.

Mr. Auspitz was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Charles and Ray Grosnoff Auspitz.

He was a U S Army veteran having served 10 years of active duty.

He is survived by one son, Andy Auspitz of Manchester; three daughters, Glenda Buchanan and her husband Doug of Manchester, Tina Auspitz of Michigan, Carla Norbitt of Washington; one sister, Phyllis Auspitz Cohen of Hatfield, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren plus one on the way, three great great grandchildren plus two on the way; several nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania; also the staff and patients on CLC West at the VA Nursing Home in Murfreesboro.

Mr. Auspitz loved to travel, raise horses, play solitaire and watch John Wayne movies.  He was a diehard Seattle Sea Hawks fan.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Veterans Administration.

In a crucial district softball game for Coffee County on Wednesday night they hosted Shelbyville. The Lady Raiders lost to the Eaglettes earlier in the season. Coffee County got 4 runs in the 4th inning and went on to win 5-1. Pitcher Brianna Jones picked up her second win of the week. Coffee County is now 20-11-1 on the year. Brianna added to her state leading strikeout total with 12.
The Lady Raiders will host the Coffee County Classic on Friday and Saturday. The ladies will play at 4pm and 7pm Friday night and Saturday morning at 10am and 11:30am. The single elimination part of the tournament will begin after 1pm. Thunder Radio will carry all Coffee County games.

Wednesday night in high school baseball Coffee County traveled to Winchester to take on Franklin County. The Raiders jumped to an early lead and just kept adding to their scoring running away with a 10-3 District 8-AAA win. The victory secures 3rd place in the standings as Coffee County finishes district play with a 7-5 and 13-13 overall. Stanton Keele knocked in 2 runs to go along with Tyler Cavender, Peyton Meeker and Wyatt Day all adding an RBI each. Meeker was the winning pitcher.
Friday night the Raiders will host Lavergne for Senior Night. Activities begin at 5:45pm and the game at 6pm.

The Coffee Middle baseball team dropped a 12 to 2 decision on Wednesday night to North Franklin in the CTC Tournament at Winchester. North notched a run in the 1st inning before Coffee County charged back and took a 2 to 1 lead in the 3rd. From that point on, it was all Gators as North notched 4 runs in the 3rd inning and never looked back. Coffee County managed only 5 hits on the night as Alontae Taylor had 2 singles and an RBI. With the loss, the Raiders fell into the elimination bracket and will take on Harris Middle on Thursday afternoon at 5 PM in Winchester.

The Coffee Middle soccer season came to an end on Wednesday night at Tullahoma as the Raiders fell by a final score of 3 to 0 to the host Wildcats. Tullahoma got 2 first half goals and notched their final tally in the 57th minute to advance to the 2nd round of the CTC Tournament. The Raiders played inspired defense but could not mount a scoring challenge in the loss.

The Coffee Middle softball team opened play in the CTC Tournament at Tullahoma on Wednesday night taking on the host Wildcats. The Cats came out swinging the bats scoring 9 runs in the top of the 1st inning on 7 hits and 3 Lady Raider errors. The Lady Raiders fought back with 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning but could never close the gap falling by a final score of 12 to 8. Haley Richardson took the loss for Coffee County, but did have a 2 RBI triple in the 1st inning to help her cause. Athena Lusk finished with 2 singles for the Raiders and 2 RBI. With the loss, the Lady Raiders fall into the losers bracket and will play at 5:00 PM on Thursday at East Middle School in an elimination game.

New Tullahoma Family Finds Mortar While Unpacking

A family that just recently moved to Tullahoma found more than they expected while unpacking.
According to Police Chief Paul Blackwell, a family who recently moved here from Hickman County and was unpacking, found a mortar shell. They told police that their son placed the mortar on the moving truck when the family was packing to move here.
“After finding the shell the man placed the shell near a wood pile and then notified us,” Chief Blackwell stated. The chief explained that Lt. Ray Higginbotham then notified the Army explosive personnel at Fort Campbell, Ky. The explosive experts made the over two hour trip to Tullahoma and took possession of the device. They then properly disposed of it.
Anytime such a device is found police should be notified and they will contact the proper people who will properly remove the item.

Tullahoma Will Celebrate Arbor Day

Arbor dayThe City of Tullahoma will observe Arbor Day on National Arbor Day, Friday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend a Tree Board ceremony to honor the Noon Rotary Underpass Planting Project completed in 1997. The ceremony will be held adjacent to the Family Chiropractic Complex at 111 Marbury Crossing. Visitors are asked to park behind Kmart.
State Forestry officials with the State Urban Forestry Department will present the City with its 17th Tree City USA Award. Tree City USA is a tree planting and tree care program sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation for cities and towns in the United States. To qualify for Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards established by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. The State will also present Tullahoma Utilities Board with the Tree Line Award. The five standards for Tree Line are quality tree care, annual worker training, tree planting, tree based energy conservation and Arbor Day Celebration
The Tullahoma Tree Board encourages residents to consider a Memorial Tree donation. Donations can be made for $150. The tree will be planted on public property by city staff. Each donation will be recognized by a “leaf” on a memorial tree plaque at City Hall and cross-referenced in a “key.” Every effort will be made to honor the wishes of the family and donor concerning tree species and location.
Tullahoma Tree Board members include Chairman Ralph Graham, Mark Schempp, Liz Kennedy, Barbara Snyder, Milner Carden, Wendell Hanson and Steve Worsham.

First Lady Makes Big Announcement For Vets

ebenefitsFirst Lady Michelle Obama has announced a new online effort to link soldiers leaving the military with jobs that match their skill sets.
She said Wednesday that the new Veterans Employment Center provides one-stop shopping for troops as they transition to civilian life.
The move comes as the U.S. winds down wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the administration seeks to lower unemployment among veterans.
Mrs. Obama, joined by Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, made the announcement at Fort Campbell along the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. Go to www.ebenefits.va.gov

Relay for Life Event Is Set For Friday Night

Relay 4 Life BIt’s that time of year, Relay For Life in Coffee County will be Friday night at the Coffee County fairgrounds.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivors and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. There will be a live auction, food, games, and more.
This year’s Relay For Life will begin at 5 p.m. with a survivor reception and registration. The opening ceremony will be followed by survivor and caregiver laps will be at 6p.m. Please come support and cheer on the Survivors and take a moment during the Luminaria Ceremony to remember all those we have lost to this terrible disease.
In the event of rain, the Relay will be held indoors at Westwood Middle School.

Shred Day Is Saturday

BBBOn Saturday, April 26th, the Better Business Bureau will host a national identity theft and fraud protection event in local communities across North America. Bring your boxes or bags of paper documents that contain personal identifiers, and we’ll shred it for you FREE – on the spot. The BBB will also be distributing great tips and resources to help you protect your identity – online and off.
The Shred Day will be held at 9am – Noon or till truck is full. The Better Business Bureau event will be held Ascend Federal Credit Union, 1929 McArthur St, Manchester, TN.

Award Winners At Motlow

Motlow 3Billy Hix, associate professor of education and full-time faculty member, and Shannon Freeman, an adjunct professor of psychology, were awarded the 2013-2014 Motlow College Foundation’s Faculty Excellence Awards during a recent ceremony in the Clayton-Glass Library on Motlow’s Moore County campus.
Nominees were selected by a committee comprised of Motlow College faculty and staff. A resident of Shelbyville, Hix has taught for over three decades. In addition to teaching at Motlow, Hix directs the STEM program, which teaches students about science, technology, engineering and math. Through this program, Hix travels to area schools to educate students about astronomy and other STEM related subjects. Hix also serves as a teacher liaison for the Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports global space industry through educational programs, and is an advisor to NASA.
Originally from Shreveport, La., Freeman has been a resident of middle Tennessee since 2006. Upon completing her graduate degrees in both counseling psychology and education, Shannon has served as an elementary classroom teacher, school guidance counselor and a professor of psychology at Motlow.
