Legal Aid Society Helping Citizens With TennCare Problems

tenncare2Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands confirms they’ll provide free legal assistance to TennCare applicants whose applications have been delayed.
Legal Aid Society’s actions come on the heels of a Sept. 2 preliminary injunction ordered by U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell of the Middle District of Tennessee requiring TennCare to provide hearings for any individual who has proof they applied more than 45 days ago – or 90 days for disability cases – and has not yet received a decision on their application. The injunction was in response to Wilson vs. Gordon, the nation’s first challenge for a state’s refusal to implement the Affordable Care Act.
The Tennessee Justice Center, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the National Health Law Program filed Wilson vs. Gordon in federal court on July 23 on behalf of Tennesseans who applied for TennCare through the Federal Marketplace and had not been given a decision in more than 45 days. Judge Campbell certified the case as a class action and is calling on the state to promptly adjudicate claims and hold hearings.
Individuals who have applied for TennCare on or after October 1, 2013 and have not received a final eligibility determination within 45 days (or 90 days if the case involves a disability determination) are urged to contact Legal Aid Society.
The Legal Aid Society in Coffee County is located at 123 NW Atlantic St, Tullahoma and their phone number is (931) 455-7000.

Governor Haslam Stressing Importance Of Receiving Flu Shot

flu-vaccineGovernor Bill Haslam and the state health commissioner are stressing the importance of Tennesseans receiving their influenza vaccinations this flu season. On Friday, September 19, Governor Haslam, and the commissioner will receive their seasonal flu vaccinations at the Shelby County Health Department in Memphis.
Each year on average in the United States, an estimated 5-20 percent of the population can be infected with the flu, and more than 200,000 people may be hospitalized from complications of the illness. Vaccination is the best way to prevent infection with the flu.
Immunization against the flu protects not only the person receiving the vaccine but also his or her family, friends and coworkers. Flu vaccine can be administered in the form of an injection (the “flu shot”) or nasal spray, and is widely available throughout Tennessee from county health departments, primary care providers and pharmacies. The Tennessee Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge annual flu vaccination for everyone over six months of age.

Serious Educational Problems For Teens Who Use Marijuana

teens and potA new study published in British health journal the Lancet Psychiatry has found that marijuana use is associated with serious educational attainment problems in teenagers.
The study concluded that teens who smoke marijuana on a daily basis are 60% less likely to complete their high school education than those who never touch the stuff. According to the research, those same teens are also 60% less likely to complete their college education and are more than seven times (!) as likely to attempt suicide.
The researchers found “clear and consistent associations” between the high quantities of marijuana young people reported ingesting and “all adverse young adult outcomes.” So pretty much every one of the seven developmental outcomes was tied in some way to marijuana use before the age of 17, and the problems got worse as teenagers consumed more and more marijuana. Sobriety Checkpoint Saturday, Sept. 20th

sobrietyThe Manchester Police Department & Coffee County Sheriff Department will be conducting a Sobriety Checkpoint on Saturday, Sept. 20th, 2014 in selective locations on Hwy. 55 & Hwy. 41 in Manchester, TN. The general hours of the checkpoint will be between 8 P.M. and 1 A.M. (not to exceed 2 hours). This special enforcement is designed to make our roadways safer.
The purpose of the checkpoint is to raise the level of public awareness and inform citizens about the efforts that are being used to identify and apprehend impaired drivers. Through implementation of these events, the Manchester Police Department strives to reduce traffic related deaths, injuries, and property damage due to impaired driving.
Normal traffic flow in the area will not be severely interrupted, and delays will be minimal. The patience, cooperation, and understanding of all motorists will help make the highways safer for all drivers and passengers.

The City of Tullahoma announces the first phase of road improvement projects. Starting today (Monday, September 15, 2014), the Rogers Group will begin paving certain local roads under the Federal Surface Transportation Program.
The roads that will be resurfaced include:
• Veterans Boulevard
• Marbury Road(from Veterans Drive to the 600 Block of Marbury Road)
• East Lincoln Street (from Washington to Cobb Road
• West Lincoln Street (from Cedar Lane to the bridge over Blue Creek)
“We ask the community to be patient with the contractor’s crews while they are working,” said Director of Public Works, Wayne Limbaugh. “The contract allows the Rogers Group seventy five days.”
Signs will be posted during this construction, and temporary lane closures may be required. Expect delays and seek alternative routes.
Motorists should be aware of the reduced lanes and watch out for workers in the construction zone and exercise caution.
Motorists should always obey reduced speed limits in work zones, regardless of any lane closure activity.
Questions concerning these paving projects should be directed to the Wayne Limbaugh at Public Works at 931-454-1768.
