Over 35,000 Have Signed Up For Tennessee Promise

Tn PromiseWith the Nov. 1 deadline to apply approaching, the Tennessee Promise program could be on pace to perhaps double the state’s goal of applications.
The Tennessean reports that more than 35,000 high school students have applied for the program, which offers free tuition at the state’s two-year community colleges and colleges of applied technology.
The newspaper says that means some two-thirds of the 60,000 public high school seniors in Tennessee could eventually sign up for the program.
The state’s goal was 20,000 applications.
The real test will be how many more diplomas the program eventually produces, a question that won’t get answered for a few more years.
Tennessee Promise was pushed by Gov. Bill Haslam and approved by the General Assembly this past spring.
As of Saturday Motlow College had 2,183 students signup which is the 6th highest amount out of the 13 state community colleges. Southwest College in Memphis had the highest amount of signees at 2,875.

Two goals in the first 8 minutes and a supportive home crowd were not enough to keep the Coffee County CHS soccer team season alive as they dropped a 3 to 2 decision to Lincoln County on Saturday night in the 1st round of the District 8-AAA soccer tournament.  The Lady Raiders got off to a hot start on a wet and cool night at the Red Raider soccer field as Eliza Masters buried a nice cross from Holli Smithson in the 4th minute to give the Lady Raiders a 1 to 0 lead.  4 minutes later, Alex Ellison hit a 35 yard missile from in front of the net over the Lady Falcon keeper to make the score 2 to 0 and it looked like the rout was on for Coffee County.  Lincoln County’s Caragon Treola cut the lead in half 3 minutes later from the right wing and that 2 to 1 score held up until halftime.  Lincoln County managed to tie the score in the 47th minute as Coffee County deflected a Lincoln County shot past Lady Raider keeper Ali Shelton off of a set piece.  From there, each defense held tight as the game ended in regulation tied at 2.  Lincoln County’s Treola scored late in the first of two 10 minute extra periods to advance the Falcons to Tuesday’s soccer semifinals.  With the loss, the Lady Raider season came to a close marking the end of the high school careers of 3 senior Lady Raiders.  Seniors Taylor Deberry, Alex Ellison and Andrea Fisher each played well in their final contest as the Lady Raiders finished the season with a record of 6 wins, 8 losses and 3 draws.
