DUI Arrests Up In Tennessee–Several Made In Coffee County
A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation report says there were more Tennessee residents charged with driving under the influence in 2014 than 2013.
The report, which is submitted to lawmakers, says law enforcement agencies arrested 29,544 around the state for the offense in 2014. That’s 639 more people arrested for DUI than in the previous year.
Officials say in some cases, the increase is due to new techniques that include analytic software to predict when and where drunken drivers might crash and focusing more efforts around establishments that serve alcohol.
Manchester Police Chief Mark Yother says his officers made 63 DUI arrests in 2014. Tullahoma Police Chief Paul Blackwell says in his town there were 64 DUI arrests made last year.
Sheriff Graves Announces Scam Alert
Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves says scammers are back at work in the area.
A number of individuals across the county are getting calls from an individual who claims to be from the sheriff’s department and that he has a warrant for their arrest for various things. He then tells his intended victim that they can avoid being booked into jail if they send money via a Green Dot credit card. Graves stated that these calls are definitely SCAMS, please do not fall for this. The sheriff added that this time scammers are using actual deputies’ names.

Nursing Students Performing Well At Motlow
Motlow College nursing graduates have once again exceeded the state and national pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses, according to Pat Hendrix, interim director of nursing at the College. Motlow’s 2014 nursing graduate pass rate was 96.92 percent, while the state average was 87.44 percent and the national average was 81.79 percent. Sixty-three of Motlow’s 65 graduates in 2014 passed the test. While the state average is one of the highest in the nation, Motlow’s 2014 NCLEX pass rate was the highest of all the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs. Compared to the TBR Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs, Motlow ranked second in pass rate. The TBR is among the nation’s largest higher education systems, governing 46 post-secondary educational intuitions. The TBR system includes six universities, 13 two-year colleges (including Southwest) and 27 colleges of applied technology, providing programs across the state to more than 200,000 students. Haven of Hope Needs Volunteers
Haven of Hope, an area shelter for victims of domestic abuse, is seeking volunteers to work with its sexual assault program. Volunteers must be 21 years of age with the availability for on-call shifts who can attend regularly scheduled meetings and assist victims to the hospital. Potential volunteers should be able to work in a crisis situation and be able to support victims during medical exams and when giving their reports to police. For more information, call 728-1133.

Local Swimmers Break Records
The Coffee County High School swim team had a great outing this past Friday at the Middle Tennessee Regional Swim Meet.
Daniel Larsen set new school and personal best times in the 100 yard backstroke finishing 11th overall; the highest finish of any CHS swimmer in the school history and in the 100 yard butterfly finishing 17th overall.
Kayce Scott, Lili Harris, Emily Warner, Emma Allen and Hayley Franklin finished with personal best in their events as well as setting new school records in the 200 and 400 yard relay.
Daniel Larsen moves on to compete in the High School State Championships in Knoxville Feb. 13-14 in the 100 Yard Backstroke and the 100 Yard Butterfly. This is Daniel’s record breaking third straight trip to the State Finals.
Also at the Middle Tennessee Middle School Swim Regionals, Jack Beachboard set new personal and school records in the 500 yard Freestyle coming in 3rd overall and in the 100 yard breaststroke coming in 6th overall.
Anna O’Connor set new personal and school records in the 500 yard Freestyle coming in 11th and in the butterfly coming in 13th overall.
Kaylee Williams set new personal and school records in the 100 yard breaststroke coming in 11th overall and a new personal best time in the 500 yard Freestyle coming in 13th.
2/4/15 —- Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Harris Gray
Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Harris Gray, age 88 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on February 1, 2015 at the St. Thomas-West Hospital in Nashville.
She had retired from Batesville Casket Company in Manchester;was a co-owner and operator of the Hillsboro Telephone Company; a homemaker and a member and Elder of the Hillsboro Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Gray was a Past Worthy Matron of the Manchester Order of the Eastern Star #339 and served as Grand Page at Grand Chapter OES in 2014. She will be remembered as one who loved spending time with her family, gardening, farming, growing flowers and sewing.
Mrs. Gray was preceded in death by her husband, the late Melvin Gray; parents, William Vannoy Harris and Effie Ellen Gibbs Harris; great-granddaughter, Megan Parker; son-in-law, Richard Koslick; and brother, William Harris, Jr.
She is survived by her children, James E. Gray (Linda) of Murfreesboro, TN, Linda Koslick of Hillsboro, TN, Robert E. Gray (Jane) of Tullahoma, TN and Boyd W. Gray of Manchester, TN; sister, Mildred Crownover of Gadsden, AL; brother, Robert L. Harris of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren, Shelby Gray (Kendall), Jonathan Gray, Michael Gray (Nicole), Leah Perhac (Chris), Amy Coble, Lesa Reed, Chris Parker (Rita) and Lona Bailey (Chris); eleven great-grandchildren, Matthew Gray, Taylor Gray, Drew Perhac, Ashley Perhac, Ashleia Coble, Saige Coble, Conner Reed, Cassidy Reed, Brianna Parker, Sarah Parker and Christopher Parker; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Central Funeral Home.
The Funeral Service and Order of the Eastern Star Service will be conducted on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Central Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at the Hillsboro Memorial Cemetery.
2/4/15 —- Elsie R. Starnes
Elsie R. Starnes “Beebaw”, passed this life on Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma at the age of 90.
Mrs. Starnes was born December 29th, 1924 in New Bedford, MA to the late James and Lucy King Robinson.
During her life, she worked at The Parris Store in Tullahoma for over 20 years, and was a member of Wesley Heights United Methodist Church as well as The Order of the Eastern Star.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Starnes is preceded in death by her husband, Carl M. Starnes; two sisters, Ivy Robinson and Freida Changarlides; two brothers, Fred and Harry Robinson; and one daughter, Patricia Ann Starnes.
She is survived by one son, Tommy Starnes and his wife Peggy of Ardmore; three daughters, Cathy Damron and her husband Justin of Tullahoma, Debi Ingram Cook and her husband Billy of Tullahoma, and Margie Lowe and her husband Paul of Manchester; Nine grandchildren, Vicky Bradford and her husband Steve, Becky Shelton and her husband Dexter, Robert Starnes and his wife Karie, Jeremy Damron and his wife Sherri, Jasen Damron and his wife Natalie, Jimmy Ingram, Paul Lowe Jr. and his fiancé Lauren, Matt Lowe and his wife K.T., and Cody Lowe and his wife Jessica; and 24 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Trace, Katie and her husband Drew, Carly, Sam, Abigail, Ayden, Jeremy Wayne, Jacob, Jase, Jack, J.P., Ashley, Emma, Chesnie, Alexis, Calyssa, Bailynn, Tommy, Lucy, Luke, Brooklyn, Camryn, and Charlotte.
Visitation for Mrs. Starnes will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd from 5:00-8:00 pm at Kilgore Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will take place Wednesday, February 4th at 1:00 pm in the Kilgore Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Jim Fields and J.C. Stewart officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Tullahoma.
